Thoughtful Posting

This may seem to many like a repeat of the 'internet manners' discussion that was aired recently, but I wanted to revisit the heart of this matter because of recent developments.

I recently raised a question about texting birth announcements on the AIBU forum recently and unwittingly provoked all sorts of reactions, incurring rudeness and insensitivity along the way. I am not posting here to carp about that, but to highlight it as illustrative of a wider problem.

I am relatively new to GN, but as a result of that thread I received several emails from people who are evidently upset about the way some GNetters post. I suspect there are even more who felt the same. Some are newly arrived, but say they have been put off posting full-stop. Some say they are leaving GN because they are genuinely dismayed at the levels of unkindness expressed and what seem to be pointedly negative / aggressive /insensitive comments. Sometimes when people have raised concern on the forums they feel they have been then publicly shot down in flames and it is usually suggested that they are too sensitive. Some people feel that others assume they are right no matter what and that they have an apparent right because they are longer term members.

I am not writing here to 'preach', or 'carp', or 'point the finger' - rather to think of solutions. none of us are saints and we are going to make errors and misread posts at times. Sometimes something is said 'tongue in cheek', but is taken as offensive. These sort of misunderstandings can be checked out and in my experience a PM often does the trick. However, like many who have emailed me, I honestly think some posts are an awful advert for this site and I really understand why others are put off.

Sometimes the problem may be that when a thread becomes very long it is tempting to skip and just add our own view. Sometimes what we discuss is indeed sensitive and emotive and we can find ourselves reacting strongly. I think it is a good idea to at least skim read other posts and to take time to consider views that may differ from our own and also to keep in mind that this is indeed a public forum.

Perhaps the litmus tests are
* would you actually say the same to someone's face?
* would you feel embarrassed if others actually knew who you were?
*would you mind your views being requoted in public?

Well, I have put my head above the parapet. I have done so because I genuinely like GN, but like others who have emailed me, I have been really dismayed at the way some posts develop and feel that at times we don't actually do ourselves any credit. I also think it is truly sad that a significant amount of people are evidently put off taking a full part in discussions.

Ah yes, Camp coffee!
There was a bottle of sherry from last Christmas (or the one before) and a bottle of brandy for medicinal purposes in the sideboard in our house.

Imperfect meant well and I thought she put it very well. Not nice to discourage people who are trying to make things more pleasant for others.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 05-Feb-16 10:52:09

No gin knocking about anywhere in our family j. We were lucky if we got a cup of Camp coffee. grin

Nonnie Fri 05-Feb-16 10:47:47

Several pages since I left for the news yesterday!

I don't think the OP sounds teacherish at all but do think that some of the people who have accused her of being such and of being patronising have come across as such. Of course nothing wrong with being one but to use it as an accusation seems harsh to me. I think she has put the same old feelings which come up every now and again rather well, better than I did years ago when admittedly things were much worse.

They way we choose to interpret the intentions of a poster is up to us but I think it reflects our own personality and perhaps we should think what that says about us as individuals.

NanaandGrampy Fri 05-Feb-16 10:46:17

Jalima I know grin

Adjusts Pjs !

That's how I know I'm retired - 10:45 and still in my pjs . Oh well another coffee won't hurt smile

Jalima Fri 05-Feb-16 10:36:57

So I'm a "newdie"
shock just as well this is not video-linked NanandG

Jalima Fri 05-Feb-16 10:35:32

Probably lost on Gransnetters that's going to annoy me now confused not that it is lost on Gnetters but the reason .....
Unless you had a gin-soaked great aunt Jenny?

NanaandGrampy Fri 05-Feb-16 10:33:01

Thatbags ahhhh opinionated that's mesmile

I've lurked a long time but only posted in the last couple of months . So I'm a "newdie " !! Hmmmmm might need to rethink that grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 05-Feb-16 10:32:49

I do like to be subtle. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 05-Feb-16 10:31:55

they. not she

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 05-Feb-16 10:31:04

Her post was flouncing.

I called her "Jenny" for a reason. Probably lost on Gransnetters. I would never make a mistake with bags's name. Or ab's. Or *wilma drawers knickers fit. etc. etc. Perhaps because they are regular posters. And would be missed if she left.

That's all.

NanaandGrampy Fri 05-Feb-16 10:30:10

Elegran thanks for your response also.

Particularly resonates with your 2nd paragraph . Not something I'd given much thought to but can now see how that would impact.

Interesting stuff !

Jalima Fri 05-Feb-16 10:30:08

thatbags I see.
imo it's easier to modify your own behaviour and your reaction to other people's behaviour than to try to change theirs - without in any way being submissive to them. I have found that through experience, an example of which I posted on that other thread.

There's nowt so queer as folk as my DM used to say.

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 10:29:17

Actually, nanaandg, you've struck me as a jumper and joiner-inner of the kind I was describing. I've no idea if you're a relative newbie or a cranky old oldie like me!

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 10:26:41

True, Elegran

NanaandGrampy Fri 05-Feb-16 10:25:42

Thatbags appreciate the response.

Something to ponder over methinks .

merlotgran Fri 05-Feb-16 10:25:40

Just read all today's posts and rather than repeat everything that's already been said by Jane, kitty, alea and bags I'll just say I supect Imperfect has no intention of moving on from any unpleasant threads she starts and will no doubt start up another one in due course.

We've had members like that before so we know what's what when it comes to someone who loves to get under people's skins.

Strange username for one who wants everything to be perfect.

I won't be able to get that Fairground Attraction song out of my head now. hmm

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 10:25:32

Maybe not an intentional one Imperfect but that is how it came across from you.

pollyparrot Fri 05-Feb-16 10:25:18

Yawn grin

Elegran Fri 05-Feb-16 10:24:33

Nanaand g "Just a question - when do "relative newbies" become oldies in forum terms?" To reply to a genuine question with (I hope it comes over as that) a genuine answer - I don't think it is time exactly, more amount of posting and perhaps integration - by which I don't mean vanishing into the amorphous mass, but having had enough reciprocal conversations to no longer feel like a stranger parachuting in with unasked-for advice.

Very few people read all the posts in all the threads on all the topics on the Gransnet forums, so it is hit-and-miss whether a few posts have made a new member visible to everyone. Therefore, they don't instantly become a known voice, and the instinct is to think "Who is that, then, appearing from nowhere and wanting to regulate what has been going on successfully for so long?" A very natural and human reaction!

For instance - I personally feel more acquainted with NanaandGrampy than I do with Ginny42 or Imperfect27 - though this thread has increased my acquaintance with them both, particularly Imp who has had a lot of conversation with a lot of other posters and now seems much more three-dimensional. (Hope the abbreviation doesn't annoy, but it is shorter to type)

rosesarered Fri 05-Feb-16 10:24:24

You can now see OP where this sort of thread leads, as Anya said in the first few posts! It was ( sorry but has to be said) a bit of a lecture.

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 10:23:51

Though, actually, you are perfectly entitled to chip as you were doing. It's just a bit irritating. But I should deal with that myself ?

As you were ?

pollyparrot Fri 05-Feb-16 10:22:31

I just think it's all been said and it would be better to leave it. I can take humour, love it.

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 10:20:17

if not of

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 10:18:43

I used the verb argue as equal to discuss, pol. Of you don't like the discussions on this thread, why are you here chipping in? There are plenty of others where all is sweetness and light and nobody discusses difficult ideas.

Nothing wrong with those, btw, but this isn't one of them. If you don't like it, I suggest, with humour, that you bugger off it smile. Otherwise, join in and discuss. Or just read it.
