Just a quicky but I store my Xmas trees in heavy duty polythene bags that I 'scrounged' from a carpet shop years ago. They were only too glad to get rid of them. The 'tunnel' shape is ideal and vary in circumference and FREE!

I always find the house a bit 'sad' when I take down the decorations, lights especially . Now looking forward to summer when sitting in the garden means 'lighting up' time again. Roll on summer fed up with winter now.

I'd say the smell is akin to burning a big candle Vonners Our wall hung fire throws out so much heat that it is only on in short bursts when really cold or for added atmosphere. You are just burning alcohol like the top of the Christmas pudding.

I haven't noticed any smell from the burner when we're sitting around the table in the garden.

Do the ethanol burners smell?

B&Q have a few electric wood burner/fireplace things on sale this weekend, around £45.

We've got an electric wood burning stove too, but we never need the heater bit because the two radiators are enough. We like the wood burning effect though and bought a hearth and pipe to make it look even more realistic. The l-shaped pipe comes out of the heater and into the wall - it even has a sliding flue. Everyone thinks it's real and are surprised to find out the whole set up is faked.

I'll stick with my electric one, I think. It looks like the old fashioned wood burners, and I'm happy with that. Anything that has real fire is not so great with the little ones I still have at home. I saw a gas fire set up as a display in a store once, and the person there was showing me how it could be set to start with a remote control, and all I could think was how my dcs could accidentally release the gas a few times before the fire actually started and blow the wall off my house. Yep, I'll stick with electric.

Yes. I've seen those. Might get DD one (birthday coming up) But I want to get as close to a traditional radiant heating wood burner as possible, without the wood burning. I like the cast iron of the one I linked to. Would give out nice heat. I think.

Ours is an ethanol burner. It is hung on the wall and needs no gas or electric. Just pour in the liquid and light! Warm, cheap and looks good. We also have a mini tabletop one for outdoors.

My open fire seems to make me cough after having it going a few nights. So it's back to he electric woodburner and candles for me too.

I want one of these I want one so much. But I can't justify the cost. Can I?

I have an electric "wood burning stove" in my fireplace but I am usually just happy to put a candle or two on the candle holder on top of it and light candles in the evening, year round. I go through a lot of candles.

I don't even mind if it's smelly or scented. I just like the flickering flame. <controlled pyromania>

One of my dcs has battery powered Christmas lights in his room that go on at bedtime, and I turn off later in the evening once he's asleep.

I have left the lights on my tall grass thingy and will light a smelly candle and maybe even a fire today!

I am wondering if all the drawing pin holes that are put in the walls for cards and decorations over the years, will eventually meet up and the said walls will collapse.

Or is that just in my house?

I have had six candles/tea lights burning this evening. As well as the year-round little red fairy lights I have on the log basket. I don't like scented candles though.

So glad it's not just me struggling to get the wretched tree back in the box! I've had this tree 3 years, and always managed (barely) to get it back in there, but this year, I'm admitting defeat!
