Does anyone remember transfers?

I loved those little transfers when I was a child. About an inch square they were, and we never did anything so boring as to transfer them to a piece of paper - always put them on the backs of our hands, or all up our arms if it was summer and our arms were bare .
I used to use embroidery transfers a lot - most needlework shops (what happened to them? ) would have files of them that you could leaf through and choose from. You could often use them more than once, though the transferred design would get weaker with repeated use, of course. Think I still have one or two in amongst my needlework bits and pieces.

There are numerous sorts now for children. My DGD had "Frozen" ones and face painting at her birthday party. Some children do call them "Tattoos".

I remember tranfers as defined by OP. They were the equivalent of the stickers modern children have. They were multicoloured, but watery colours and often were mini pictures.

Embroidery transfers were very different and were transferred by being ironed onto the fabric to be embroidered and were essentially diagrams in a mid-blue or black

jing yes Ive got one of dots to use for gathering for smocking. ( the only form of embroidery I can do)

We probably hadn't even heard of tattoos in those days!

I remember them as transfers. I seem to remember them being in packets of bubble gum too!

You can buy quite realistic fake tattoos that work just the same way as the transfers we had a children. My GD put a mermaid on my ankle on holiday one year. It lasted a couple of days but eventually succumbed to the swimming pool water. Search 'fake tattoos' on Ebay or Amazon.

I don't think they call them tattoos, will have to ask. They're just the same as the ones we used to get in the 50s though.

Yes, we used to put them on the back of our hands and lick them.

My GDs often have one or two somewhere on their persons, like not-very-good tattoos! I think they come with bubble-gum or something.
