My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

Anya Mon 01-Feb-16 07:23:38

Well done one and all, those who succeeded, those who almost succeeded and those who fell by the wayside - at least you tried.

And thank you for your humerous and practical support smile

Greyduster Mon 01-Feb-16 09:24:10

Anyone ever had cornflakes with Merlot instead of milk? Delicious! (Not!) ?. Only joking! Well done everyone, whether you slipped a little long the way or not. This thread has been great fun!

NanKate Mon 01-Feb-16 18:54:16

Yes well done to all.

Now to tonight's VIRTUAL PARTY.

All you have to do is during the next 24 hours is answer the following questions.

1. What are you wearing ?
2. What will be your drink of choice after a month or less of abstaining?
3. Who will be your guest from present day or history
4. Finally what is your party piece.

Can I start the party off?

1. Purple dress with butterflies on it.
2. A Bacardi Mojito
3. Prof Brian Cox
4. Balloon modelling

Greyduster Mon 01-Feb-16 19:16:33

Ok, here goes:

Jeans (couldn't find the dress!), a dark red silk shirt and heels shock. Look! No waders!
A very large Plymouth gin (or several) and Fever Tree tonic.
Derek Jacobi.
A passable rendition of Tom Lehrer's 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park' - with or without piano accompaniment!

Do we have a secret knock to gain entry to your establishment, ma'am?

NanKate Mon 01-Feb-16 19:27:59

Well at least there will be the two of us Greyduster at this party.

No you don't need a secret knock, as I will look through the spy hole and if I don't like the look of the visitor I won't open the door, so there. hmm

Greyduster Mon 01-Feb-16 19:32:59

That's me done for then! grin

Willow500 Mon 01-Feb-16 20:24:17

Jeans and thick jumper
Spanish red plonk
Steven Tyler
Who needs a party piece with a guest like that grin

glassortwo Mon 01-Feb-16 20:27:30

Done it, now a glass of wine for my birthday grin

Willow500 Mon 01-Feb-16 21:01:38

Happy Birthday - enjoy smile

glassortwo Mon 01-Feb-16 21:12:26

Thanks willow

Greyduster Mon 01-Feb-16 21:23:45

Happy birthday glass!

baNANAGran3 Mon 01-Feb-16 21:38:08

Happy Birthday Glass!

Black track suit trousers (but they are Gap with side zips at ankles), pale purple top (very old, sorry) with dark purple gilet

a very cold white wine - to start.....

Rod Stewart

Same as Willow - my guest would do a "turn" for us (that doesn't sound right)

Will put my best smile on for when NanKate looks through her spy hole.

baNANAGran3 Mon 01-Feb-16 21:40:21

Just realised I should have said what I'll wear to the party - not what I'm actually wearing now! (too late to change anyway)

NanKate Mon 01-Feb-16 21:44:22

You're all welcome especially the birthday girl Glassortwo. I like the idea of a musical accompaniment.

Anyone fancy a dance ? I wonder if Anton du Beck is available ?

baNANAGran3 Mon 01-Feb-16 23:27:53

Well it looks like most have gone home so I'll say thanks for the party Nankate & to all for the fun of this thread, it's made me smile during the dryest January ever for me. Night night all.

NanKate Tue 02-Feb-16 07:26:36

Well I'm just clearing up after the Virtual Party. I think it went well and I only got two complaints from the neighbours for rowdy laughter grin

I will need to go down to the bottle bank today to get rid of the empties other than that we are all back to normal.

Thanks Greyduster for the book called *Flyfishing for Fun'. Oh I also had a lovely signed Album from Rod Sewart and my guest Prof Brian Cox gave me an quick identification of the stars in my back garden wink

Thanks for getting me through January and making the party such a success. flowers

Greyduster Tue 02-Feb-16 08:39:24

Do yourself a favour, NanKate, give it to a charity shop! There are days when the words 'flyfishing' and 'fun' are a contradiction in terms!! Thanks for your support, and for the party - it was a blast!

jogginggirl Tue 02-Feb-16 11:14:51

So sorry - I didn't make the Virtual Party - I had a g&t just to get me in the mood whilst getting ready - and nodded off blush Sounds like you all had a great time winecupcake - maybe after our next dry month wink
It's blinkin' freezing up here in Cumbria - sun promised later though?
Belated happy birthday glass flowers

glassortwo Tue 02-Feb-16 11:18:16

Thank you smile

Anya Tue 02-Feb-16 11:59:05

Oh no! I missed it too for very much the same reason as JG because I was doing worthy deeds blush

Belated Birthday wishes from me too Glass flowers

ShowerGel Tue 02-Feb-16 18:48:06

Well I haven't started partying yet ... nor put pinot noir on my porridge ...as I was babysitting last night. I'm driving tonight, and tomorrow, perhaps Thursday may be the end of January (I was late starting anyway)?

Then today, of course, the news is that reaching for the glass of wine is going to raise my cancer risk. sad
I might have to stick to gin grin

Elrel Fri 05-Feb-16 02:24:08

Still loving getting back to my Redbush tea! Looking forward to lunch in a lovely restaurant tomorrow with a glass or two of wine! Maybe even a fizzy one ...

Wondering whether to give up all forms of chocolate for March. Even my tiny bars of very dark Aldi emergency chocolate. Now that WOULD be a challenge!

jogginggirl Fri 05-Feb-16 07:34:40

Hope you enjoy a lovely lunch tomorrow Elrel ?
I've done four days without chocolate- this could be a long haul hmm

NanKate Fri 05-Feb-16 07:41:43

Well I am still off the alcohol, much to my surprise. Just weighed myself and I have lost another pound, which is very heartening news as I wasn't expecting this.

I realise now that I am sleeping much better too, which is a real bonus.

The challenge however is this coming week when we are looking after our 3 and 5 year old GSs for 8 days, with some help from their dad, whilst their mum goes away for a week on a course. HELP !!

Greyduster Fri 05-Feb-16 14:22:13

This week I have had three glasses of wine, a glass of sloe gin (for medicinal purposes!) and we have just been out to lunch so I had half a pint of Guinness! I weighed myself on Monday, and I hadn't lost an ounce during all this abstention. In the run up to Christmas, I lost half a stone, put that back on again and now I'm back to square one. I have now cut the sugar out of my hot drinks, and will throttle back on the drinks and get back into the exercise regime in an effort to get some weight off. But tommorrow is GS's birthday so you've got a have a bit of cake haven't you?
