My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

A friend wasn't at tai chi so I thought I'd go and see her. She offered me lunch, soup and homemade strudel, and suggested we open a nice bottle of red as it was her son's 60th, he lives in Australia. I felt so bad refusing, perhaps there will be a suitable occasion in February.
It's the morning cuppa and bedtime chocolate I'm really looking forward to though.
Half way!!

I was only looking!!

Cheers Thanks, NanKate!

Must admit I didn't start until Jan 4th for various family reasons. So I will do what a Muslim friend did in Ramadan ( obviously re fasting, she never drinks alcohol) and add those days on at the end. I find sleep is better, but as others have said I do miss the weekend wine. In fact I had to cancel my January Laithwaites box, [smug emoticon] because there was no space for it.

Thanks banaNANAgran3! I am ashamed my willpower is so weak though!

I'm not sure I'll never drink alcohol again Anya - but I do get what you are saying. I have enjoyed all the 'replacement' drinks, and, although no weight loss, no weight gain either - win, win....smile

Maybe it is true that it's possible to change habits in 66 days - just another month or so to go then ...? hmm

As you say NanKate it does help having the support on here smile

Welcome JoyBloggs xx

Dry day 15 tcrgrin

Still on track ! I'm enjoying my large fizzy water with a slice of lemon in the evenings and sometimes a cup of camomile tea. Plus my shopping bill at Aldi is considerably lighter! So that's a bonus. Sleeping much better as well, but awake early as have to whizz to the bathroom as a consequence of all thar fizzy water. Will definitely try to keep up the alcohol free weekdays which means I'll have to continue until February 5th?

Anya Sat 16-Jan-16 06:30:18

Was just about to post when I heard voices through the intercom. The GDs are awake! So a quick 'Well Done' to every one and good luck over the weekend.

So it is Day 16 and I suppose all downhill now, in a manner of speaking.

Although there is no doubt I will return to alcohol I suspect I will keep it to 2 or 3 days a week.

I weigh myself each week and have lost a pound since last week, so with a bit of luck I will lose another 2 pounds by the end of this experiment.

Went to a talk last night and there was a free drink offered afterwards, red or white wine or orange juice. Interesting to note that only maybe a quarter+ chose orange juice. Felt very virtuous clutching mine until realised how sickly sweet it was and left half. Hey ho back to the tonic, ice and lemon tonight - and thanks to previous advice here, have not yet wiped the rim with gin...

glassortwo Sat 16-Jan-16 09:16:10

DD and I are still going strong, and I havent missed it, which is surprising as I like a glass of red grin

JoyBloggs Sat 16-Jan-16 10:51:17

Thanks, jogginggirl smile

Having friends round for a curry tonight (the house smells like a Indian takeaway at the moment!) so this will be my first real test in 2 weeks.

Willow500 Sat 16-Jan-16 19:04:18

I've still not had a drink since Christmas day - I was ill for so long and now am on antibiotics - by the time I've finished the course I might as well go the rest of the month and will then feel very proud of myself for an alcohol free January - without trying! smile

jogginggirl Sat 16-Jan-16 23:10:11

So many of us resisting temptation (((pat on the back emoticon)))

Anya - the good thing about curry - for me anyway - is that I don't really crave an alcoholic drink hmm But whether you do or whether you don't - good on you girl, you've had a lot to contend with. Hope you've had a great evening ??

I hope you feel better soon Willow and well done to everyone who's still here smile

Help! Am I the only one to have weakened?

Anya Sun 17-Jan-16 11:11:55

No Cambia I fell off the wagon last night

hangs head in shame

NanKate Sun 17-Jan-16 14:49:15

I've stayed on the wagon but not enjoyed it one little bit. It has surprised me how much I miss a tipple, especially as I never have more than 2 drinks and only drink about 3 or 4 days a week.

It must be very difficult for alcoholics to remain sober.

ShowerGel Sun 17-Jan-16 15:00:49

I'm still on the wagon and missing the alcohol less and less even though, like NanKate, I'm only a modest drinker.

About to fall off as DH has cracked and opened a bottle of Chianti to have with our roast dinner. wine roastchicken

suzied Sun 17-Jan-16 17:51:58

A neighbour has brought us a bottle of Sancerre as a thank you gift. OH has hidden it in the garage for us to enjoy in a couple of weeks time!

annsixty Sun 17-Jan-16 18:04:30

BMJ has this week said it is not of much benefit as folk drink more when they start again. I do of course know this does NOT apply to G Netters grin

suzied Sun 17-Jan-16 18:12:27

They had a feature on Inside Health on radio 4 which said a high% cut down on drinking after dry January, and it does give the liver a break and time to regenerate. I did it last year and found it easier to cut down afterwards.

NanKate Sun 17-Jan-16 19:43:25

That's a positive comment Suzied I hope to cut back from Feb.

jogginggirl Mon 18-Jan-16 00:04:23

I think it's knowing you can do it that makes you determined not to return to previous habits. I'm not finding this as hard as I did when I did it in September ... probably because I had enough over Christmas to last me a month ...LOL shock

Definitely does not apply to G/netters annsixty grin
