My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

Keep it up, all of you, you're doing so well! Some of your non-alcohol substitutes sound really tempting. I'll be trying them on my 5:2 diet fast days.

thebeeb that's a hard give-up. Best of luck.

Funny how that happens greyduster - something to do with mindset perhaps?

Think I'll try that too Nankate

Easy for me too. Drink very little, but should try a chocolate free January. Might manage to give away the cheaper chocolate (received as gifts).

baNANAGran3 Mon 04-Jan-16 23:34:37

So I won't mention bread..

baNANAGran3 Mon 04-Jan-16 23:33:12

Yes you can Thebeeb because I for one -have given up- am trying to give up chocolate too (thought it sounded a bit smug to put that in the previous post along with the wine). smile

I can almost taste it NanKate - ?

NanKate Mon 04-Jan-16 22:04:06

To jazz up my non alcoholic drinks I am freezing grapes and dropping them into the nice large wine glass with M and S flavoured water, the peach and raspberry flavour. Nothing like a nice glass of chilled Chablis, but it will do. hmm

Day 5 beckons.

Lots of bloody-mindedness commitment being shown on this thread - excellent stuff grin

Greyduster - after a day with dm who had unplugged every electrical item in the house, cooked two meals from my db who has been living in Spain for the last 15 years or so, tried to vacuum the house without the dust container attached and had dismantled the cooker to clean it and put all the spare parts upstairs in separate places ... phew my thoughts did turn to wine on the drive home hmm
However - red grape shloer with sparkling water has been tonight's choice of beverage grin

Day 4 done - keep going smile

Teacher11 ... hmm??

We're just doing the two no alcohol nights a week thingy. Life's too stressful at the moment for a whole month without a drink.

hmm

trueblue22 Mon 04-Jan-16 21:03:14

I started on New Year's Day. Only had a couple of sips of DH's wine. Lack of alcohol making me hungrier though hmm

Greyduster Mon 04-Jan-16 20:49:12

After a day looking after my dear Grandson, surrounded by K'nex, Lego and twenty three action men and their assortd kit and kaboodle, i usually do a swan dive into the nearest bottle of shiraz, but strangely, on this, dry day four, i have had no inclination to do so.... I think i must be sickening for something!shock

Thebeeb Mon 04-Jan-16 20:33:40

Can I join in with chocolate free Jan?

baNANAGran3 Mon 04-Jan-16 20:10:55

Meant to say, Good Luck to everyone doing it! wink

baNANAGran3 Mon 04-Jan-16 20:09:25

JillMay, we too have Mondays alcohol free, felt virtuous until reading recently that two consecutive days is best. I've only started dry January today so it won't strictly be a totally dry January but will do my best. Have deliberately drunk lots more water today than usual.
I think it'll be helpful to come on here and read supporting words from those who understand that for some, even light social drinkers, abstaining from something we regard as highly enjoyable can be difficult after a time. A delicious evening meal with no accompanying wine........hmm

Anya Mon 04-Jan-16 18:49:45

You for one do not have to endure anything as I suggest you take yourself off somewhere you are appreciated - unlikely though that is.

Anya Mon 04-Jan-16 18:47:06

What a thoroughly unpleasant post.

Teacher11 Mon 04-Jan-16 17:56:34

Dry January? I'll drink to that.

Puritanism is bad for everyone: the participants and the poor souls who have to endure the abstainer boast and complain.

JanT8 Mon 04-Jan-16 17:38:46

And, no, I haven't had one yet!!

JanT8 Mon 04-Jan-16 17:38:11

Whoops, meant to show a wine bottle then!

JanT8 Mon 04-Jan-16 17:37:29

Just wish I didn't like it as much as I do! Cheers! wine

Had a slight wobble at 5.00 p.m. today as usual so put a selection of nuts, dried fruit and grapes in a bowl and have nibbled on them. And before anyone says nuts and dried fruit are high in calories I know that hmm

The benefit I have found already is that I no longer have a dull headache before I go to sleep. I often had to have a Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to clear my head. Oddly enough I am not a big drinker, just a regular one.

Just sorting out a nice glass to fill with some non alcoholic beverage with ice. Thanks for this suggestions GillT57.

PPP I found your comment quite depressing, but feel sorry that you didn't get the benefits you hoped for.

PPP Mon 04-Jan-16 16:02:16

I had an alcohol free April last year. Didn't lose any weight or feel any better for it!
Trying to have a couple of alcohol free days a week to keep the liver fit!
Cheers

Ana Mon 04-Jan-16 15:47:33

Well, that's what I meant of course...tcrsmile

Anya Mon 04-Jan-16 15:47:10
