Do you call your OH "dad"?

Following on from the cats mother debate, I wonder if anyone calls their husband "dad" ( or wife "mum"?) I think this used to be quite common in the past. I tease my DH for calling his mother "Nan" , and I received a card from one of my DDs which was written( by her) " to Nanny" .... Am I alone in finding this weird?

No way, it is a strange custom and as bad as saying you are 'mummy' or 'daddy' to your pet. But that is another debate

I call him everything but a Christian sometimes, when I up the pole with him.

Just like Bennan does except it is Grandma and Grandpa to the GC. grin

Bennan Thu 17-Dec-15 13:46:19

Shortened names to each other or darling, Mum and Dad to the kids and Nana and Grandpa to the GC. Simples! smile

I had a much older cousin who used to call his wife 'mummy' and we used to snigger about it behind his back. It did sound ridiculous.

My parents used to call each other 'wife' and 'hus'. Awful!

DH has been known to shout "grandma, where are you" ? it is just a bit of fun because the GC used to shout it when I was out of their sight. I have called DH by a pet name for 48 years and sometimes forget and slip up when we are out shopping, good for a laugh when you see the teenagers' faces.

NO I don't as he isn't , my Dad that is, or my children's Dad. As I probably said before I shower everyone in this house with Darlings and Sweethearts but when I'm being playful its Big Bum -the point being he hasn't - got a Big Bum that is he is very nice!! grin DH juts likes to be called by his forename he doesn't like being called Uncle or Grandpa but I don't let the grandchildren call him anything but Grandpa I don't think its respectful so he has to put up with it perhaps when they are older.

Janeainsworth, yes fraid so, but it was years before I realised the connection. He was a lovely Farve

Juggernaut Thu 17-Dec-15 11:42:34

We both use shortened versions of our given names when speaking to one another.
DS calls us mum and dad, his wife uses our shortened given names.
Occasionally I'll slip up and call him dad, but he never calls me mum!

My husband and I call each other Darling ... I swear we'll probably forget our actual names in our extreme old age!!! We do use Gran and Grandad in front of our granddaughter, mostly to get her knowing our titles in the hope that one of these days she might actually utter them. ?

janeainsworth Thu 17-Dec-15 11:21:06

auntieflo that's very Nancy Mitford, isn't it?smile

NanaandGrampy Thu 17-Dec-15 11:10:42

Crikey I'm in the minority then ! I call him Dad when referring to him to the kids . I call him Grampy when referring to him when speaking to the grand children and occasionally I continue to do so when it's just us .

We're neither of us precious about it . We sign joint cards to the kids as Mum and Dad but don't expect our sils to call us that but one does call us Ma and Pa .

Marmight Thu 17-Dec-15 11:08:20

Never! [shudder], except when talking about him to the DDs. When talking about me to the DDs he always referred to me as 'Mummy' which I found quite sweet as after about 12 they called me Mum (or the 'old bat' wink). My in-laws always referred to each other as Mother and Father [shudder again]

maryhoffman37 Thu 17-Dec-15 10:36:18

Certainly not! I hate that practice and find it really creepy. There is a big difference between reference and address too.

Auntieflo Thu 17-Dec-15 10:32:47

Mum used to call Dad ' Farve'

Gagagran Thu 17-Dec-15 09:57:09

We don't really call each other anything except when the DGC are with us then we say Granny or Grandad. DC (and subsequent partners) have called us by our given names ever since their teens when they thought it very daring to do so and I ignored it, thinking it was a passing fad. Well it hasn't passed. My late elder sister was appalled and reprimanded DS for daring to call his Dad by his name! (She was very prim and proper)tchgrin

thatbags Thu 17-Dec-15 09:32:44

No. We all call each other by our first names or family nicknames. We know what the relationships are without needing nominal reminders.

Alima Thu 17-Dec-15 09:29:28

No, like ninathenana I think it sounds very old fashioned and a northern saying. I normally call him by his name, occasionally Jockles as he is a Scot. If I am being honest several other things too if really cross. I refer to him as dad if talking to our daughters. One of my DDs, the one now safely with us, was called mum by the person who was married to her. Always sounded odd.

baubles Thu 17-Dec-15 08:58:12

My sisters in law always called their father 'papa' instead of 'dad' in his later years. I thought it horribly patronising and I know that if ever I'd done the same to my own Dad he would have told me off in no uncertain terms.

To answer your question, no I'd never call DH 'Dad', I refer to him as such when speaking to my children.

aggie Thu 17-Dec-15 08:52:49

When OH was in the Care Home he introduced me to everyone as his Mother , even told someone I had been at school in his Mums home village !! Now he is home he calls me mostly by my name , I sign cards to the children and their OHs by our names and Gran and Granda to the DGC

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 17-Dec-15 08:51:07

Or, "yer father". Depends on what is being said.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 17-Dec-15 08:49:38

No. When referring to him to the kids I say, "yer dad".

shysal Thu 17-Dec-15 08:47:47

My parents used to do it, so I agree it is a generational thing.

hildajenniJ Thu 17-Dec-15 08:33:34

I call him by his name! He sometimes calls me mam. When he does I always answer "I'm not your mother", to which he usually replies, " sorry Hilda".
