The government guidelines you've been reading are incorrect, OLW. A 175 ml glass of 13% alcohol wine = 2.28 units!

To do the maths, just multiply the volume by the alcohol content and divide by 100. You don't actually have to do the last bit as common sense will tell you how many units are in the glass/bottle

I hope not, as that would mean I will be quite outrageously drunk later

.... thinking of fizz this reminds me of something else - although I am a linguist and maths is not my strongest point, can somebody please clarify for me why, when the government guidelines on safe drinking specify one unit as a small (175 ml) glass of 13% strength wine, does the very nice (750 ml) bottle of Mumm I am about to pop into the fridge to chill tell me that it contains 9.8 units?

750 ml divided by 175 ml in my book makes exactly 4.2 units for this bottle, not 9.8 (used the calculator for this one so it may actually be correct) .

Should we raise this subject under the Trade Descriptions Act as false representation? I mean .... they tell me I am getting 9.8 units when there are only 4.2

Goodness it's Wednesday. Everyone needs to celebrate Wednesday it's the middle of the week.
And you need to practise for Christmas so you won't get drunk on the day.
And you have to make sure other people don't drink too much. You are sparing them a lifetime of overindulgence.
And you have to show people what a good head for alcohol you have.
And you're worth it.

And, just because you opened a full bottle, doesn't mean you have to drink it all

I buy those little bottles of fairly ok champagne and prosseco from M&S as well. They're one large glass so unless you open a 2nd (as if) there's no danger of you overdosing on a full bottle of the stuff. However, given you seem to have been Christmas baking, I'd say go for it Jing.

I haven't had any for years, made some about 15 years ago and gave it all away.
I wanted to make some this year but haven't got round to it....I think it's a bit late for sloe picking now. I was waiting for a frost but now realise I could have just bunged them in the freezer instead, doh!

Real lightweight me when it comes to alcohol. I've bought myself some Sloe Gin so will get quietly sozzled in the corner!
