We simply don't know about ethnic or sexual diversity but as has been said, unless someone as part of a general discussion, discloses that information I can't accept that asking directly would be desirable or acceptable.

I think it matters a lot, especially when talking about certain topics. And there are always new ways we can learn how to do things. or prefer how to do things.

We do not know how diverse racially, or sexual orientated or anything much else GNRS are and IMO that is good thing.

It is also good that we don't need to go on here and announce our backgrounds unless we choose to.
You cannot force people to join and you have no idea how racially diverse or any other sort of diverse a poster is. I could easily be Afro Carribean for all you know. Just the few grans I have met at meet ups will know for sure.

That is one on the joys of GN. however, as Alea says there is probably a degree of self selecting with regard to education and personality.
Those of us who spend more time GN than others might be more sociable or more lonely than others who post.

There are probably the more lazy slovenly Grans who keep posting on GN, still in their dressing gowns, when they should be finishing off shampooing the carpets at the back end of their living rooms. TTFN

Diversity (or lack of it) only matters if Gransnet presents itself, or is regarded, as representative of the entire population of grandparents. As long as it recognises itself and is recognised as just a self-selecting group, then its diversity only matters to the extent that the group would like more diverse views and experience to be expressed.

I happen to belong to a club with one membership qualification, which would be generally regarded as elitist but reflects a shared experience. If I want diversity I go somewhere else (like Gransnet!).

Exactly what I thought, we can't make GN more diverse it will only be made that way by the people who join.

Maybe the name does put off some who aren't actually female grandparents but I don't think a re brand would be possible.

I am quite open about me, so much so I irritate some. I do wonder how many visit here then run, it seems mostly white, middle class who like to pretend class doesn't exist - which is very middle class thinking. Some as snobbish about education and there is such care not to say too much about feelings , I was sharply told my posts were melodramatic , no idea if this if the welsh me or the fact I don't stop to think how I should word every sentence . There is much caring here but little sharing . I would more diversity, often feel lonely here .
