How much do you spend on Xmas presents?

When the children were small and money was tight my dear OH and I agreed not to buy each other presents and we have kept this up. He, however, has a Christmas birthday and so gets masses of high value pressies.

I give my children £100 each and spend another £50-£80 on things to unwrap on the day. I spend £50 on my sister and mum and £30 each on my nieces and £40 on my BIL.

It's all a bit much, I know. I don't know how to 'row back' as they say. No one seems to notice that they are opening presents and I am not. My mother sulked because she thought the kids were getting more than she was and didn't even 'clock' that I had less than she did. From her I had a pair of grey tights that my sister bought and wrapped.

Hilarious, they must have mistaken me for a nun as I've never worn grey tights in my life!

I make most of my presents for the grandchildren - knitted toys for the younger ones, garments when they get older, so actual spending is around £20 per person. When I was still married each of us bought an 'us present' - something the two of us could enjoy.

Because Christmas involves mass-buying of presents, the cost of each needs to be kept reasonable IMO. There is a chance to spend more and concentrate more on the individuals when it is their birthday.

i spend up to £25 each for daughter, son and daughter in law. son and daughter in law usually have a joint present as they ask for more practical presents. I then spend up to £30 on each of my granddaughters.

daughter and 2 granddaughters who live with me get a Christmas stocking too but that's only bits and pieces.

we tend to spend out on food which is "special" for Christmas week as we've more time to spend on preparation and cooking.

I spend about £30 each on my 3 grandsons and the parents get £20 each .My husband about £50 .Plus small gifts for 2 close friends and great nephew .So it must add up to about £300 .

About £150-200 on each other, and roughly £500 on DS and DDiL. I don't know what DH spends on FiL, but it's not much! We have no young children in the family, so not many folk to buy for, but I fully intend to spoil any future grandchildren!
Friends get wine/chocolates.

we spend around £50 on our kids ( 2 extra this year due to marriages) and £30 on out parents & SH buy me stuff with whatever money we have left. He gets cricket membership & travel to matches

I've asked the family to give my presents as donations to Save the Children's Wishlist. I don't need or want anything. However, I will give them gifts as usual. My DiL is very good at finding links to things the GC really want/need and never suggests anything too expensive.

I too love giving presents - it would just never occur to me to spend that sort of money. I had a very very stingy father, so perhaps it is hereditary!

DH and I spend about £80 on each other we don't buy for our siblings just nieces and nephews but now it's become great nieces and nephews instead tchgrin] they get £20 each our DC get the same. DGC used to get about £50-100 (they both had bikes last year) but now they're living with their father and we are lucky to see them one a month I've cut down this year (let him buy the expensive pressies!!)

I've got a dd still at home. I normally spend around £200 on her. Perhaps a bit more depending on what she wants. She's not really a "wanter"though. I guess I just like spending money. I love getting presents for people!

Me? I'm happy with some books and a bottle of booze.

DH and I don't exchange presents, when he was "with it" we would have a break away in the New Year or something for the house. GC get between £50 and £100 depending on age and wishes, I don't feel the need to spend the same on each and they get things throughout the year again depending on need. DC get a cheque when I have decided again what is needed. We don't have any other close family.

Gosh! - we must be a load of old scrooges here! I honestly had no idea that people spent that much. I hve led a sheltered life!

I have never spent these sort of sums ever. Children and GC are given gifts to the value of up to £50 - never any more. If someone has need of something to a higher value, we double up with the DDs and give a joint present - e.g. one DD wants a garment costing £100, so we chipped in with the other two DDs.

No-one seems to feel hard done by and we all have a good time.

The adults started Secret Santa last year and it works well. Money and a small present for each of the four grandchildren (about £500). I spend about £120 on my brother and his family (five adults).

I don't begrudge it. I like giving presents.

I like Christmas in fact. I've never quite lost that glow that you get as a child waiting for Father Christmas to call and hoping for it to snow.

Even the rather fierce feral cat who hangs around my back door is getting a cat kennel this year!

Secret Santa for us adults this year, just spending £35 each on one family member, so nothing at all on each other. We do both have January birthdays though.

I don't have a spouse so I spend about £100 maybe, maybe a bit more on myself. My darling Dad is giving me money to pay for a holiday break in the New Year which is very kind of him but what I will need by then. He will give some money to my DS too. I have bought my dad a World's Greatest Dad t-shirt, a photo frame of me and him, socks and chocolate, but then I buy him things all the time.

I've spent probably £200 on my son, games (old fashioned board games to have some fun) some cheeky bits for a laugh and some special presents too. My darling little doggie has had about £80 - £100 spent on her. She is with me whenever, wherever and in whatever condition I am in so deserves to be pampered. I have bought thank you gifts for my dad's carers, my lovely cleaner and the hard working postwoman.

I am estranged from my D and GS's so now don't buy for them. It is actually her 28th birthday today but no card from me, her doing, not mine. I used to get skitted for the essays I wrote in her cards saying how much I loved her and how proud I was of her, but she has none today. It's been some time now, so I get on with my own life now, happily. Well, as happily as possible under the circumstances of my dad's illnesses.

Oh, and the budgies have had a few things bought them too, new toys and new swings with bells on, they should make my son curse a bit!

Of course, all gifts have been sent to Father Christmas.

I ask my (adult) children to send me a wish list and only buy what I can afford without going into debt. The children/grandchildren don't get the same amount spent on them and don't expect to; for instance my older son is going to NZ for Christmas so this year I'm giving him and his wife a chunk of money towards their holiday and a small gift each to unwrap on the day. Next year they'll most likely get much less. My younger son wants a pair of special cycling gloves, so that's what I've bought him, plus a few bits and bobs. The difference in money spent on each of my sons for Christmas is nearly two hundred pounds, but neither will care as they will each have what they need and they'll be grateful. The younger son receives a monthly allowance as he's at university, so he's thankful to be getting a gift at all!

DH and I don't bother! If we fancy a night out or something like that in the New Year we do it and decide it's our present to ourselves. Neither of us need or want anything, so it seems a waste of money just to spend just because it's Xmas.
Gt.Grandson gets about £60 or £70 spent on him, with one good toy being bought and the rest being clothes. He's 5. DD and I have agreed £15 for each other and adult grandchildren about £30-£40.

GC get gifts to the value of about £250 each, DC and spouses get a cheque each.

We spend about £20 each on our grown up children, grandchildren still at school we tend to spend between £30 and £40, adult grandchildren who are working, between £15 and £20, but one daughter seems to think we`re being stingy by cutting down now they`re working. Hubby usually spends about £150 on me, but I wish he wouldn`t, because I can`t afford to spend as much on him, usually it`s around £60 to £70. Christmas giving can get out of hand, especially if money is tight.

As the years have ticked over our spending has got less and less as there are fewer and fewer things we want. This year we've each made an Amazon wish list (oooh dear, see tax thread, I feel guilty admitting this now) because it's impossible to have too many books but that's it. No jewellery or big ticket items for us nowadays...

I do think the younger generation tend to spend more on presents, not only for each other, but for their children.

Perhaps they only asked wealthy shoppers the question?We ask each other what we want, and buy it, usually not more than £70, then buy a small gift to unwrap on the day costing under £10.
