Liquorice

Liquorish. Horrible stuff. Turns your teeth black and has a drastic effect on the bowels!

I love the allsorts too, so did my sister until she was diagnosed with diabetes. Was it the allsorts or was it the g&t which went with them? (Very occasional for me, every evening for her.)

Lickorish! I was in Harrogate for the Country Living magazine Christmas Fair, and went into Farrah's sweet shop. I was in heaven. They had an entire display of liquorice sweets, all different varieties. I bought a packet of liquorice whirls, I haven't tasted them for years. They were gorgeous!

Oo, and flying saucers . I used to like those tubes of sherbet with licquorice straws - I'll be looking for them in the supermarket now.

Ish, and I love it. Desperately trying to think of any other -ice ending pronounced -ish, but I'm drawing a blank....

Just one of those eccentricities of our language I think greyduster. Allsorts are definitely not as good as they were, I agree. Another gripe of mine is that flying saucers contain so much less sherbet.

How can it be liquorish if it ends in 'ice'? Where does the 'ish' come in? And why are liquorice allsorts smaller now than they used to be? And you don't get many Berties either, now! No, i'm not Scottish - I wouldn't make a very good Scot, i'm afraid; I don't like bagpipes!

But what the heck! I like the blue bobbly ones and the pink bobbly ones - not keen on the sandwich types.

Lickoriss. Is it a geographical thing? My English friends say "lickorish" and my Scottish ones say "lickoriss".
