How do you pronounce 'liquorice' ?

oldgoat Sun 06-Dec-15 23:50:40

Liquorish. Horrible stuff. Turns your teeth black and has a drastic effect on the bowels!

I love the allsorts too, so did my sister until she was diagnosed with diabetes. Was it the allsorts or was it the g&t which went with them? (Very occasional for me, every evening for her.)

Lickeriss - I've got a book called 'How to pronounce it' and that's what it says.

Lickorish! I was in Harrogate for the Country Living magazine Christmas Fair, and went into Farrah's sweet shop. I was in heaven. They had an entire display of liquorice sweets, all different varieties. I bought a packet of liquorice whirls, I haven't tasted them for years. They were gorgeous! tchgrin

Oo, and flying saucers smile. I used to like those tubes of sherbet with licquorice straws - I'll be looking for them in the supermarket now.

Maggiemaybe Sun 06-Dec-15 20:35:22

Ish, and I love it. Desperately trying to think of any other -ice ending pronounced -ish, but I'm drawing a blank.... hmm

Bellanonna Sun 06-Dec-15 19:40:12

Just one of those eccentricities of our language I think greyduster. Allsorts are definitely not as good as they were, I agree. Another gripe of mine is that flying saucers contain so much less sherbet.

Greyduster Sun 06-Dec-15 19:32:12

How can it be liquorish if it ends in 'ice'? Where does the 'ish' come in? And why are liquorice allsorts smaller now than they used to be? And you don't get many Berties either, now! No, i'm not Scottish - I wouldn't make a very good Scot, i'm afraid; I don't like bagpipes!

Ana Sun 06-Dec-15 19:18:14

Ooh yes, just noticed anno's post! tchshock

Ana Sun 06-Dec-15 19:17:06

But what the heck! I like the blue bobbly ones and the pink bobbly ones - not keen on the sandwich types.

Bellanonna Sun 06-Dec-15 19:16:48

anno. You can't stand being Scots ? confused

Ana Sun 06-Dec-15 19:14:52

I don't think Greyduster is Scottish either...

Wheniwasyourage Sun 06-Dec-15 19:14:14

Welcome Ana! You can share my allsorts when rosesarered chucks them.

rosesarered Sun 06-Dec-15 19:09:11

Ana you are officially outed as being Scottish! Move North of the border immediately if not sooner.

annodomini Sun 06-Dec-15 19:04:54

Likoriss. I'm Scots and I can't stand it.

Bellanonna Sun 06-Dec-15 18:57:45

Ana Sun 06-Dec-15 18:49:46

I'm not Scottish...tchsmile

Wheniwasyourage Sun 06-Dec-15 18:47:53

Lickoriss. Is it a geographical thing? My English friends say "lickorish" and my Scottish ones say "lickoriss".

rosesarered, you are welcome to pelt me with liquorice allsorts, however you care to say it, as I love them grin
