Floods!

Been watching the news and its looking so dangerous and scary, those poor people going through it for the 3/4 th time its horrendous.

Just returned from visiting family in south Cumbria and we we're so relieved to find them all safe and sound. Local rivers coping so far but the river Duddon was so swollen and angry. The house has only just had it's roof repaired on a new extension which was another great worry but all is fine thank goodness!

Any area that suffers from regular flooding, I presume, but I must admit I'm not well up on the subject. Must do some googling...

Oh so a town is much more likely to get defended them say a rural area?

I don't think it's £8.00 worth of property (as in houses etc.) so much as general protection against flooding for the area, i.e. benefits.

What I must find out is this - each flood defence put up by the Environment Agency must show that it protects at least £8.00 worth of property for each £1 spent. So does that mean that all things being equal in flood risk a house worth a couple of million will be protected in preference to one worth £100000?
If this is the case is property in the south more likely to be protected than the north?

Certainly makes one think about planning.With sincere sympathy to all involved.

Main road into Northallerton from the A1 yesterday. Likely to be closed for a few days. Thoughts with those who are affected elsewhere.

Driving past Carlisle, yesterday, the M6 was like a bridge over the sea!

Water stretching for acres. I have never seen anything like it. So sorry for all those flooded.

Each major flooding incident is worse than the previous one. Each time we say how dreadful it is and something must be done etc etc. We don't however seem to make a connection between our fossil fuel use and the level of flood defence spending who h has been cut 30% over the past 5 years and due for a further 30% cut during the current term.

Let's hope the talks in Paris make some progress. We need to slow climate change down.

I live in Keswick. The devastation is heart breaking. Lots of houses and businesses flooded. Our house fortunately is fine but neighbours are affected. There is lots ofmud and debris over many of the roads and the beautiful parks are wrecked . Also poor folk of Cockermouth flooded again. I find the changes in weather in our lifetime so worrying.

It isn't looking at all good for many. Cockermouth main st. is still flooded. Keswick is worse than 2009. I do hope for the town it will return to some normality. I am flood free too. Luckily the electricity is on and hope it stays that way.

A day of respite here in Cumbria, calm and sunny, BUT more rain is forecast. It is devastating and they said in 2009 that it was a once in a hundred year event. Am sure it is worse is some areas this time. I live on a hill so get blown about somewhat, but remain flood free. We have only just recovered from the events of 2009 and shops on the Main Street have slowly recovered from loss of so much business, especially from the tourist industry. Main roads have been washed away in places and the diversions are hideously long. Not a good start to family's Christmas preparations.

I live just outside Carlisle and my heart goes out to all those affected by the floods again 6 years after the devastating floods of 2009 Sadly new flood defences were breached in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Appleby and Keswick and the damage and devastation is terrible.

Have lived here all my life and it's the worst have ever seen.

Most will not have insurance after last time and so close to Christmas. Poor souls.

Frightening when you see what volumes of water can do. Hopefully no gran has been directly effected

Here is the promised photo of the Burn. Today, and by way of contrast, another taken from the same spot on Sunday 9th September. The burn has peaked and gone down a bit, but the Tyne is peaking about now.

I can't imagine how horribly frightening this must be for the poor people who are victims. Being evacuated, not knowing what state your home will be in, hoping your family is safe. Dreadful!

I just cannot imagine the despair some people in those areas must feel. All their homes flooded, and Christmas preparations/ gifts all lost to the weather. I have just on another send Seasons Greetings, but these poor people must feel devastated.

Hope all is okay hildajennieJ and all Gransnetters caught up in the terrible floods,drier here today in the West of Scotland,a fair amount of saturated fields and high rivers though.

Hope all northern GNs are safe and dry.

We are travelling to Scotland up the M6, later today. We'll be checking on our Scottish house. It's on a hill, but exposed to the west coast! Hope the very high chimney is still there!

Feel for the folks in Appleby, we often stop there for lunch. Not doing the A66 route today.

Oh dear coolgran that will be a sleepless night. Best wishes to them and to anybody at risk this weekend.
Watching the speed and force of the rivers in Cumbria and in Hawick I realised you would stand no chance if caught up in that flow. The damage is going to be awful. At least lambing hasn't started yet, - as well as damage to homes I always feel so sad about livestock in floods.
