Today chatting over a cuppa tea, my friend and I worked out we've known each other for 35 years - meeting up at least once every fortnight to catch up on each others life.
During that time we've probably got through enough teabags and chocolate biscuits to bury the Houses of Parliament, and have come up with enough pearls of wisdom to shame the members in that place..

Do you still keep in contact with friends you've known most of your life? (that's not counting DHgrin)

We have regular reunions with people I've been in primary/infant school with..many of them are still in the same village. I have two very good friends whom I met about 15 years ago through work, and some "mother" friends from the school gate. Many of my current friends are choir/piano friends.

I don't think I have many close friends, but the ones I have I like to keep hold of! I don't really "do" acquaintances.

Lovely to hear about long lasting friendships..I'm fifty eight and I've already lost two of my dearest friends but life goes on and I've reconnected with a lot of old close friends and made new friends along the way who are all supportive.I recently had a total hysterectomy and everybody's been so supportive.

PPP - I thought your sentence read - Amazingly we are still all alive and married to the same man. It sounds better like that actually. Sorry about my warped sense of humour!

During The Troubles in the early 70s most of my close friends moved to England or Scotland and have never come back. I still keep in touch with one of them. We always meet up when she returns for a holiday and have a meal and a drink together. It is so comfortable to slip back into a friendship that has lasted about 50 years.

2 of my other close friends that I met when the children were small died of cancer within a year of each other. I still miss them and have never really found anyone else who could replace them. sad

My best friend and I started school together when we were 4 years old and we are both now 79 years old .Although she now lives abroad we keep in touch every week. Old friends are best friends.

My oldest male friend still takes me out for lunch, we've known each other for 58 years. My oldest female friend I've known since college, 57 years. Very grateful to have them both, along with other friends, male and female, whom I've known almost as long.

Make new friends,
But keep the old.
One is silver
One is gold.

My oldest friend started infant school with me 64 years ago! We have led very different lives but now live a few miles apart. We have history!

I have today been out for lunch with three friends. We used to work together and have been lunching regularly for 30 years. Amazingly we are still all alive and married to the same men.

I have friends who went to Uni with me. Friends who I made when the children were small, friends from my working life and friends I have made since I retired. I have lost touch with some friends who moved away, and over the years a couple have 'dropped' me. I don't really know why some people really are friends for life and others fade out of the limelight. But, long term friendships are certainly to be treasured.

Glad to say I have some very good old friends from long-ago school days, the kind you meet up with after a while and it´s like yesterday. More lovely friends from work and hobbies too. And I thank heavens too for two treasured friends, not known for so very many years as some, who are the most marvellous women. Wicked, funny, kind. Sanity-savers.

I thought 35yrs of knowing someone was a very long time. However after reading many threads of loving friendships still ongoing after many more years, I stand corrected - friend and I are mere tadpoles in the pool of friendshipsmile

Oh my goodness, I just worked out that I've know my oldest friend for 59 years! And apart from marrying and having children (and that 15 years apart) we have nothing whatsoever in common, she's indoorsy, brilliant cook and seamstress, while I'm more than capable of burning water and can't sew for toffee - although I can paint and draw (she can't!). I've several other friends who I've been best mates with nearly as long, and again we have little in common. Perhaps that's the key?

Magicmaggie Fri 13-Nov-15 15:59:12

I first met my closest friend at a magic convention in Brighton in 1980.
We were both magiciennes and were asked to help a rather gorgeous young Dutch magician during a close-up show. (I ended up with him).
After that we "magic gals" used to meet up at various magic conventions both here and abroad.
Although we have both retired from performing and attending conventions, we still keep in touch on a regular basis. And we have fantastic memories (and the photos to prove it!)

Leonora* flowers for you and good wishes for you and your DH. You will need your friends and I trust they will be there for you.

We had a recent reunion of school friends. There were seven of us at my friend's house. One I have known for 61 years. The others I met in Grammer school in 1960.
The wonderful thing about us meeting, and we do it every year, is that we know each other so well there is no shortage of conversation.

We all went through the teenage years together and have so much in common. We each brought a dish to make a varied meal.

Last year we met at Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) and really all we needed was a table and a chair each!!!!

Most of our dearest friends have shared our lives for 45ish years; and we all raised our children together.
My DH retired when he hit 65, and we headed to France, where we spent 20 very happy years, and they all popped over from time to time to spend a week or two in the sun with us.
Now, my dear man is 90, and I'm nursing him through, ' end of life' care'
Sadly, he has had Dementia for the last nine years, and my daughter asked us to return to Uk, so that she could help nurse him.
So now, all our lovely old friends are taking it in turns to call to say, "goodbye" to him.
It's so comforting to see them all, saying their farewells- even if he now hasn't any idea who they are.

When I finally find myself windowed, I known that they'll all be there, to rally around to support me.
So, all of you Grans with good old friends, keep on treasuring them. They'll be there for you when the chips are down.

I 'met' my oldest friend in the hospital we were born in - our Mums were in neighbouring beds, hers 21, mine 42! We went to the same schools and have been friends ever since. We have had times when we didn't see each other often, but whenever we pick up the phone the months fall away and it is as if we have never been apart. We are meeting for a day out in London in a couple of weeks, it will be nonstop chat!

I met my best friend 59 years ago. I was 13 and she a few months younger. over the years our relationship has waxed and waned. I married and had children, she didn't but had an outstandingly successful career BUT when life changing events happen she is the first I ring and she also. We are now both in our early 70s and in good health so still meet up and recently had a girls weekend away at our house in France. DH, very wisely stayed at home. I do not think we stopped talking all weekend.

ginny Fri 13-Nov-15 09:49:08

We have several friends that we have known for around 40 - 45 years. I have one male friend that I met on my first day at school, 56 years ago, that I am still in touch with.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 13-Nov-15 09:36:15

I still meet up with a friend who I sat next to, in a little wooden child's chair with curved arms, at our first day at school. We were both three. We both remember the day! We were friends all through our childhoods. Had some lovely times together. We lost touch in our teens. She rediscovered me through Friends Reunited. But I am a sadly neglectful friend these days.

ninathenana Fri 13-Nov-15 09:12:18

I've known both of my close friends for years. One I met when we had summer jobs in a café 45 yrs ago. The other I met when our DD's were at the same play group 25 yrs ago. Unfortunately both have moved away but I'm in touch with both of them at least once a week. X and I spend weekends together with our DH's. Y and I meet for coffee every few weeks.

janeainsworth Fri 13-Nov-15 09:09:01

I'm going to a school reunion dinner tomorrow with two of my best friends. We met on the day we started grammar school in September 1960. We try to meet at least twice a year and are planning an extravagant 3 days in London in the spring for our next get together smile

J52 Fri 13-Nov-15 08:58:21

I met my oldest/best friend on our first day at Uni. 44 years ago. We were in the same hall of residence and then went on to share a flat. She lives about 2 hrs away across the country, but when we meet its as if we saw each other very day!

I met my longest-serving friend when we went to pre-school nursery aged 4, 54 years ago. Our lives have gone in different directions and we live on different sides of the country now but manage to meet up several times a year. I've also got a pen-friend whom I've exchanged letters with since 1979 - sometimes it's been easier to put things on paper than say out loud and she's seen me through some tough times. My last friend began as my manager - the best ever - in 1985 and is now a much loved friend with awful dementia that has taken his ability to speak. It's heart breaking. I've few friends but these three have stuck with me through thick and thin and are precious.

MiniMouse Thu 12-Nov-15 23:08:10

Have known my oldest friend for 62 years from when we were babies. We went through our school years together, then went our separate ways, but still keep in touch regularly.

whenim64 Thu 12-Nov-15 22:01:24

My dearest friend and I played together when we were two and that was 65 years ago. We see each other often now but lost contact as teenagers and then she went to the other side of the world, returning in her late 20s. When we got together again we met up and chatted non-stop and discovered we had lived parallel lives, sharing the same values, love of gardening, music and political views. We're as close as sisters and I love her to bits smile
