Long Way to Tipperary

Last night a friend mentioned that the Tipperary in the afore said WW1 song was in fact a brothel located near Leicester Square in London, and not the town in Ireland. Now I really listen to the words it does make sense, as I have heard that Piccadilly Square was once where the 'ladies of the night' plied their trade. Can any one confirm this?

Hi pippa that's intriguing. I asked Google as in "was Tipperary a brothel" and lots of discussions on the subject on various forums are listed.

But I couldn't find anything definite, so it may be one of those "urban legends".

Just googled it too as I was intrigued. I found a song entitled "The writing of Tipperary". About a bet that Jack Judge, the writer of the song made while in a pub. Reading the whole thing, it says that Tipperary in the song refers to the brothel area of London. There is a very rude parody too " that's the wrong way to tickle Mary, it's the wrong way you know". Apparently the rest is to obscene to print!!!

My DH has always sung along with this as 'it's a long way to tickle Mary' I always wondered where he got that from!
