With my first pay packet I splashed out and bought a pair of mustard leather sling backs from Lily and Skinner for sixty nine and eleven. I loved them.

I think the goat was still in mine Maggie!

My first platform shoes, strappy and turquoise.
My first eye shadow, Yardley and purple. That was my only Yardley purchase as I then went onto Outdoor Girl and Miners. From Woolies of course.

My DH had one too, Katek, and was wearing it on the rainy day I first met him and knew instantly that he was the man I would marry. Stinking or not.

I bought an Afghan coat in the late 60's which stank to high heavens if it got wet. Thought I'd arrived!

And they never go out of fashion!

A cultured pearl necklace. I was given a scholarship, but the funds came late and back-dated, so rather than waste the money, i had been lusting for one, so I got it!!! I still wear it constantly.

I now want a beautiful soft suede coat or jacket! I should have bought one long before now, why on earth didn't I?

Been asking for years...

Having pondered this one - I can say it was the watch I bought during my RAF service in Cyprus. A Felca sportmaster it was, and (gasp) you didn't have to wind it up - it was automatic!

It cost me £50, and was supplied by a Cypriot local who who ran a soft-drink and sandwick kiosk on the base!

Sadly it was stolen off my wrsty in the West End many years later.

I had to wait until I was 23 for my suede coat. It was bought with my first income tax rebate when I started teaching. It was navy blue and beautifully soft. It was still around when I came back from Africa aged 30, though I think my sisters had been wearing it in my absence!

My special item was a suede coat too! I saw it in a posh shop in the centre of Manchester, it was a creamy coffee colour with side splits and it cost 30 guineas. I had to save up for weeks!
Thank goodness it was still there when I went to buy it, or I would have been heartbroken

My DDs were desperate for Harrington jackets, which were bomber jackets with plaid linings. They insisted on the 'tonic' black, which was a slightly different shade to the normal black. I never could understand why the difference mattered, but it was very important to them.

Very cool! I think I have seen photos of someone wearing the tights and shoes you're talking about. Not heard of the fabric before, but I do remember my Mum's cousin wearing a crombie coat. I think he might have been wearing Doc Martins too - no skinhead though, he had curly hair. I didn't realise until I was an adult that the fashion was from the film Clockwork Orange.

wilma and roses mohair was a name used by Trevira which was a plain material tonic was when two colours where blended through to give a sheen in two shades in different lights..this material was favoured by skin heads,who had dresses,trousers,jackets,and suits made from it,very desirable for your street cred and essential to saturday night up the palais dancing to Desmond Dekker and Bobby Blue and all things skinhead circa 1970...you would strut your stuff wearing red or black "dolly shoes" mary janes with a low heel and beige woolly tights with a lacy paterrn by day and gunmetal grey with diamond shapes up the sides by night we where the bees whatsits

rosesarered Mine was also a suede coat - dark brown, three-quarter length. My best friend and I had hankered after a suede coat for quite a while - and at the same time as me she got a coat similar to mine. We had such high expectations of those coats - thinking they would make us appear both trendy and sophisticated and our lives would be transformed - they weren't.

I'm with vegas: books and more books! But the garment that springs to mind (I chose, Mum bought) was my red duffle coat with white fleecy lining. It saw me through university and early career and was resurrected for two pregnancies. And little heels (known as Louis heels) were fashionable in my late teens - a cream pair with sling backs were the bees knees and much admired by my friends.

Think the tonic is a typo!

a provident cheque bought me a green suede coat ..my first purchase ,then new glasses as the ones I wore were broken on the bridge and held together with fuse wire and blue insulating tape,,cant have been good for my visual accuity or pupil distances,,but my most favourite was my blue and gold tonic mohair dress with keyhole which was made to measure, by this time I had reinvented myself and upped my game a bit..
