I went out to buy....

My sister went out to buy a lipstick and came home having bought a flat!

Went out to buy a video player and bought a touring caravan. But we did go on to spend over 20 happy years caravanning when our girls were young, happy memories, couldn't have said the same for a video player!

We went out to buy a new electric kettle. Spent three quarters of an hour debating which one to get. Called in at the Nissan showroom on the way back to 'just have a look'. Bought an XTrail in under ten minutes. (We did need a replacement and had started to think about it)

Perhaps cars are best bought on impulse.

I'd been trying to get DH to come and look at cars with me so serves him right that I did it all on my own!

I went out to buy some cream for my piles and came back with an electric oven!

I can't say that I am an impulse buyer, but have noticed how hard it is when going out to buy an item( say a new coat) to find anything that I like, yet when not needing ( a coat) I happen to see several lovely ones.Is this just sods law in action?

Oh, and a couple of years ago we were out for a walk and found a £2 coin on the pavement. Full of happiness at finding this treasure, we were 'enticed' into Arnold Clark's by a nice wee silver Corsa sitting there on the grass nearby....the rest is history, of course.

I think our biggest impulse buy was about 25 years ago. DH took me out to lunch and we ended up passing a caravan sales shop. He thought he might get a length of piping that he needed in there. We enjoyed the caravan we purchased an hour later for over 20 years.

pogs my DH regards whiskey as an essential household item ... for medicinal purposes of course. there is a wonderful article in this months Good Housekeeping on inappropriate Christmas presents bought by husbands who cant manage shopping. I love the man who bought his wife a compost bin as at some point during the year she said they needed to get a new one.

It was 'as well as I'm afraid' so got to order a freezer from Ao today and adjust the budget! I love your story stillhere I'm still laughing.

My hubby often goes to buy a loaf of bread and says the cashier 'insisted' he takes a free bottle of whiskey.

What is it with cars? I agonise for months over purchases but the last 3 cars have been bought on impulse while out for another purpose - that reminds me, did the same with a caravan, had planned a set if saucepans, can sort of see the link!

A few years ago went out to buy de-icer from Poundstretcher and ended up buying new car (Arnold Clark were selling just outside the shop in our local indoor town centre). We forgot to go in to Poundstretcher for the de-icer.

numberplease Even more years ago I remember my brother being sent to the shop for some baby powder. He came back with a quarter of dolly mixtures (I suspect all of them didn't make it home!) My mother went ballistic!!!

I don't tend to buy on impulse but must admit to responding to special offers. I currently have 8 containers of fabric conditioner, 4 of washing liquid and 3 bottles of coca cola under the kitchen chairs (as well as a few in the cupboard). I haven't counted the toilet rolls upstairs but I never pay recommended price for them either.

On a much.(MUCH) smaller scale, many years ago, my husband sent one of our daughters, then aged 4, roud the corner to the shop for a box of matches which cost 3d. She was grilled for several minutes before leaving, to make sure she knew what she was going for, but nontheless, she came back with 3 penny lollies! When I went back for the matches, the lady at the shop said "she couldn`t remember what she wanted, so as they usually buy lollies, I asked her if she wanted lollies, and she nodded!"

I went for a hair cut and bought a horse( from my hairdresser) not planned but the best buy ever.

Dad went out for a roll of lino, and came back with a three piece suite. Mum wasn't amused, but it did last well.

Car Boot sales tend to be a rip-off. Antique markets like Peterborough and Newark are much better you get sensible prices for your goods.

Years ago my late mother was not impressed when my father (then aged 65, and six foot three) went out to by petrol and came home with a tiny Fiat sports car. Into it went mother , five foot nothing in all directions and two large dogs.

I would love to do that. We used to do car boot sales when the children were younger, I loved it, but sadly the general public started to expect to be able to buy anything and everything for 50p.

stillhere, do what we did develop a small business selling 'antiques' at antique fairs. We do three or four 2 day fairs a year, always outside stalls. We reckon taking into account trailer hire and pitch hire we just break even. Then for the rest of the year we can haunt church and village hall auction sales and buy unlikely lots with the excuse that we are going to sell them.

I think we can safely say there are quite a few impulse buyers around.

Does anyone remember The Fast Show, and the sketch each week, where the husband comes in grinning, and the wife says " Did you manage to get
The cat litter, and the bread and milk?" Husband says...."even better than that Dear!" And then goes on to list all the items he has bought ( usually things like a parrot in a cage, a doorstop,a new kettle etc)
