It's so dark at the moment I'm tucked up no later than 9:30, lights out at 10. Is this unnaturally early!? My OH told me he'd rather sleep when he's dead (he will happily watch sport/a film till the wee hours).

Reading through all these it seems that most of us on Gransnet are retired and it made me realise even more how lucky we are (most days at lease) to be able to go to bed when we like and more importantly get up when we like. We have the time to read that extra chapter when into a good book and enjoy a leisurely cup of tea in bed in the mornings (especially when husband gets it, which he has every day recently as I am still recovering from a hip replacement). I appreciate this even more when we stay with our daughter and grandson is awake between 5 and 6!

I drive my DH mad as I say I want to watch the news and promptly fall asleep on the sofa . After my "little nap" I usually start to go to bed around 11 but probably eventually climb into bed at 11.30 after taking contacts out, makeup off, coming back down stairs for a glass of water to take my meds , coming down again to ask DH to turn the sound down on the TV ( deaf as a post). No TV in the bedroom so read for about 5 mins and crash out ,only to be woken at about 1am by DH coming to bed .Just wish I could sleep later than 6.30 in the mornings .....

I always listen to LBC radio talk show in bed while trying to read a book or magazine in bed. I am a bit of an insomniac, but try to stick to a routine of going to bed between 11 and 12. I don't alwYs fall asleep quickly but on the other hand I always wake up around 5.30am, no matter what time I go bed and can never get back of to sleep again. Very annoying that.

If I wake up in the early hours, I switch on the radio again, it better than lying there listening to silence. I recommend the radio for insomnia.

I have insomnia and don't sleep until between 3 and 4 am.I go to bed around 12.30,with a cup of hot milk and read or crochet and cuddle the dog until I finally nod off.If I'm lucky I will sleep until 9am but, more often than not,I wake several times.I have tried all the usual advice to help me sleep but no joy!I do have one strict rule though-absolutely no screens in the bedroom.

MaryXYX Thu 29-Oct-15 12:33:48

Usually between midnight and 1 am. I don't sleep as long now so I can get up at 7:30 most days. A couple of days in the week I have to be up early to get the bus into town.

One big reason for a late night is I have a couple of friends I chat to online. One is just a late evening person and the other is in New York.

I usually go to bed during or after Newsnight, between 11 and 11.15pm.
Then read, play a word game on my phone, read, read, and more reading until I start to feel sleepy. I don't like nights.

I've always gone to sleep late and got up as late as I could since I was a little girl.
When I was working I managed on about 4 hours of sleep but now follow my body clock which means bed any time between 1 and 3 am and up anytime between 9 and 11 am. Unless the DGC are here which means I try to get to bed between 1 and 2 am as I might be up by 8 or 9 am. On the rare occasions I go to bed early ie before midnight I still sleep late.

What do I do? Watch recorded programmes because DS wants to watch Football, sport or other I'm not interested in. Plus there's always something else eg tonight made fondant flowers for my DGD's birthday cake, cooked chicken for DS's lunch, made a Halloween spider necklace and got DGC's Halloween costumes ready for the weekend. Checked Facebook and posted photos, checked GN, oh and put washing away and emptied bins as well as other bits of jobs that need doing before DGC arrive tomorrow (today).

I go as late as possible, otherwise I wake too early. We usually have some programmes recorded to watch on TV, then check new posts on the 'puter. But hard to fill the evenings in winter, in summer I often garden in the evening, or go for a walk.
I have a hot bath, read in the bath, and sometmes doze off there.
I usually get up and start chores at about 7am.

Goodness - 'old ladies' is a bit of a assumption, apricot! thlconfused

It's your choice to share your bed with dogs and a cat, I couldn't. And if I got up as soon as I woke I'd be up at 3 or 4 a.m. most mornings...

loopylou Wed 28-Oct-15 20:29:55

Ummm....not so sure about the old ladies tottering apricot !

apricot Wed 28-Oct-15 20:27:51

Wow, what a wide range of sleeping habits! I thought I was exceptionally early but there are old ladies tottering upstairs with a hot water bottle at all hours of the day and night.
A lot of you read in bed. I don't as I'm never comfortable, I only go to bed to sleep and always get up as soon as I wake. Sleeping isn't very comfortable either, sharing my bed with two dogs and a cat.

Since retiring I do what my body wants - that often means going to bed in the small hours, I find things to watch on tv (plus 1 for itv channels if things have clashed earlier), Suduko and word wheels on my iPad, fb, or read. I get up when I wake up, usually about 9 unless I have to go out for something. If I go to bed early I wake up in the small hours and can't get back to sleep. I often listen to the radio during the night (World Service) and on a Sunday I have been known to stay in bed until after the Archers Omnibus!

whitewave Wed 28-Oct-15 15:14:48

I'm like apricot -bed between 9& 10 up by 6. I long go be able to sleep in but wake and simply can't stay in bed!

Pittcity Wed 28-Oct-15 15:14:32

When I am tired is the answer to the OP. Could be anytime between 9 and 11. 7am is my usual wake up time,

glassortwo Wed 28-Oct-15 15:11:03

Having showered earlier its between 10.30 and 12 depending what I am doing, then usually sleep like a top until 4 then hide under the covers with my kindle so I don't wake DBH, drift off around 5 to get into a deep sleep then alarm goes off at 6.15, get dressed usually with the help of youngest 20 month DGS then all hell lets loose for the rest of the day.

gillybob Wed 28-Oct-15 15:03:44

In bed around 9pm on a school(work) night. Reading for as long as I can keep my eyes open. Sleep like a log for all of about 3 hours then it's up and down all night long.

It makes no difference if I go to bed later. The pattern is exactly the same.

Charleygirl Wed 28-Oct-15 08:39:00

As it becomes colder, I like to go to bed earlier- going upstairs for a shower etc around 10.30pm and then read until midnight. When I go to bed that is when my cat comes for cuddles and find a warm spot to settle down. I like to switch off the light around midnight.

I frequently put on the washing machine late evening and sometimes I get the idea that I should clean out a cupboard or two. I am more of a night than an early bird.

Atrig Wed 28-Oct-15 08:30:24

Since retiring in March I have found to my annoyance that I wake up earlier than I ever needed to before. I often wake at 4 or 5 and get anxious as I am not a morning person. I love reading but find it difficult to concentrate when I wake so early. I am learning to come on GN, catch up on Facebook, message my sister in Florida, listen to radio and wait for DH to make tea when he returns from dog walking. I've tried going to bed later to no avail, I just end up tired.

I love the evenings though, anxiety disappears, walk the dog and DH, leisurely bath, bit of time on the computer then TV, reading , sewing or knitting. Have become addicted to listening to guided meditations whilst nodding off. I rarely get to hear it to the end

Maggiemaybe Wed 28-Oct-15 08:04:05

It's interesting to see how many check emails, GN etc very late at night. I was starting to wonder if this was affecting my sleep, but it doesn't look as though it generally does.

rubysong Tue 27-Oct-15 23:25:06

DH goes to bed earlier than me so I stay up to watch things I've recorded which he doesn't want to watch. I'm frequently out in the evenings (choir, WI, belly dancing etc.) and have to have a bit of wind down time before I go to bed otherwise I don't sleep as I can't switch off my brain. I go to bed around midnight and read for twenty minutes or so.
The teasmade goes at 8am and I usually come downstairs and take my breakfast back to bed, drink tea, check emails, Facebook, gransnet and watch the news on tv.

Eloethan Tue 27-Oct-15 23:18:27

Generally between about 12 and 1 (though often nearer 1 and sometimes later). I always intend to have an "early night" but seldom do. I actually feel a lot better in the morning if I go to bed at around 11.30/12 so it's really rather silly of me not to.

I normally get up around 8.30/9 unless there's a specific reason for me to get up earlier.

harrigran Tue 27-Oct-15 23:10:38

Never in bed before 1.00. Dinner between 7.30 and 8.00 then watch a programme or two that has been recorded. Some time after 10.00 I will retire to the study to read emails and FB and then GN. Got the rest of eternity to sleep.

Anniebach Tue 27-Oct-15 22:47:57

Bed 12.45 after paper review, news on radio until 12.30, then the book of the week followed by Sailing By, lights out and settle to sleep by 1.00 am

Antjexix Tue 27-Oct-15 21:20:04

When DH is working nights I go up around 9.30 and then read snuggled up in bed until about 11.00. Don't have a tv in the bedroom. When he's off we watch tv together until about 10.30-11.00. I always wake up around 6.00 and get up at this time too,get my paper and have a coffee. I love early mornings.
