Am I losing it?

Last week I put a pan of eggs on to boil, set a timer for ten minutes and then went off to do something else taking the timer with me. The smell of burning prompted a sprint to the kitchen where my pan of six eggs was a charred and blackened mess. I had no memory of the timer going off, but think I may have heard and ignored it.
When putting eggs on to boil today I was very conscious of my previous disaster and so set the timer, put it on the table next to me, and felt confident that I wouldn't repeat my previous disaster. Wrong!!
The smell of burning is permeating the house and my six exploded eggs - again charred and blackened - are now in the bin and the pan soaking in the sink.
There is no problem with my timer and no problem with my hearing - so why didn't it register that I needed to go and take the eggs off? Am I really losing it?

Quite a few year's ago was at drs for Hrt review, dr asked what birth control I was using, obviously seeing my shock went on to recommend various methods. shock

I mentioned to Dd that Dr offered various Birth control and how shocked I was that I could have fallen pregnant. She looked at me in amazement and said "Dads had a vasectomy" I had forgotten! !!

So grannya I sympathise. smile

Quite a few years ago I had a review at the Drs for my Hrt. Dr asked during the appt what birth control I was using, Dr obviously saw how shocked I was and recommend various birth control methods.

I came home and said to my Dd that the dr was asking about birth control and it has sent me into a panic that I may have become pregnant... she looked at me in disbelief and said Dad has had a vasectomy!!!!!! I had forgotten shock

I'm actually good at navigation when I'm driving or in someone else's car, but I have one big problem that only happens when my DH is driving - I say Left when I mean Right and vice versa. I am thinking the correct word and can even be pointing in the correct direction, but the wrong word comes out of my mouth. It's very weird and drives my DH mad. Anybody else do this? blush

Nanalogue Fri 16-Oct-15 10:06:52

Me again too. Wilma, I checked the gadget link, EXPENSIVE! (£32). But I've downloaded iPhone app 'findmycar'. Will also test and report back.
Ribbons probably easier Lona!
Also checked 'Topographical Disorientation' Rascal.. I have been known to go the wrong way in my own house... Scary! confused

Nanalogue Fri 16-Oct-15 09:38:14

And you Rascal. You could join us on a magical mystery tour. Always tell DH he's not allowed to die first cos I'll get lost!

Nanalogue Fri 16-Oct-15 09:36:41

Hahahaha, I do that too...the row 3 near the trolley bay past the tree muttering thing! We'd make a great pair. Just don't follow us!
Will check App thing. grin

Speechgirl1 Fri 16-Oct-15 07:53:26

A real medical condition - huh - I shall tell people who smirk at my inability to find my way or my car. I will try the app suggested as well. It will save me muttering "row p half way down in line with the cash point" to myself at intervals whilst shopping.

rascal Thu 15-Oct-15 21:49:04

Speechgirl1 and Nanalogue there is a medical name for being geographically challenged it's called Topographical Disorientation. I know exactly what you mean I do the same, walk out a shop and turn the wrong direction. I can never find my way out of places either! I've been like this all my life and my sister suffers from this too. confused

Nfk ?

NfkDumpling Thu 15-Oct-15 19:35:32

Standing on steps trying to pick eggshells out of the kitchen coving looking through varifocal specs is very time consumingly difficult. (I didn't bother to try to rescue the saucepan)

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 15-Oct-15 09:50:20

Lona I like the idea of ribbons - might get some and do a belt and braces job! grin

I've always been absent minded too, although I would make a good police witness. My memory is very good for some things, but dreadful for others.

I really think this is something to do with women multi-tasking more than men, we have more things going on( not to mention organising family get togethers, and doing Christmas and birthdays etc.) Not forgotton who I am yet or where I live ( surprising since we move house at regular intervals) but have always forgotten phone numbers and car reg.numbers.

annodomini Thu 15-Oct-15 09:32:58

PS - that wasn't a senior problem. I was still in my 20s. blush

annodomini Thu 15-Oct-15 09:32:08

And I thought I was absent-minded. I always have been, as my late mother would have confirmed. Letting pans boil dry is a speciality. The worst example was when I was cooking liver for the cats. I went outside and started chatting to a friend. After some time, there was the most appalling stench and I didn't immediately cotton on to what was causing it. The whole house was stinking and the cats weren't interested in burnt liver. It took some time to disperse the smell!

Wilma my friend has tied gift tag shiny ribbons on her car aerial for years and it makes life much easier! smile

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 15-Oct-15 08:47:09

Me again blush - just downloaded an app for my Android phone to find my car in a car park - will report back when I try it! grin

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 15-Oct-15 08:26:54

Something like this

www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3126715/Never-forget-park-Gadget-shows-car-s-location-map-offers-parking-ticket-reminders.html

I don't have the technology needed for what the article describes, but fingers crossed something else will come along soon.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 15-Oct-15 08:22:05

In all seriousness Nanalogue I have decided to get something to stick on the aerial of my car. I really struggle to remember where I park my car in big car parks. I wish there was a gadget for finding cars like the ones for finding keys! blush

Nanalogue Thu 15-Oct-15 08:13:31

Oh Speechgirl NO You are not alone! Me too... toilets in pubs shops, can't even find way out, have to wash hands until someone else comes in/goes out so I don't end up in a cupboard. Car parks! Need a flag on top of car! DH reckons it takes me 5 days on holiday to figure out which way to turn out of hotel room! blush

Maggiemaybe Thu 15-Oct-15 08:00:35

At least yesterday I could describe my keys to DD2. When I rang the owner of the cottage I couldn't remember what my keyring looked like or how many keys were on it. shock

NanKate Thu 15-Oct-15 07:55:20

Went to the cinema this week with DH and stood there like a Wally at the counter because I couldn't remember what film we had come to see. hmm

It was The Martian recommended to us by DS. It was good but too long for. me.

Maggiemaybe Thu 15-Oct-15 07:47:11

Oh heck, keys..... We had a week away recently and when we were dropped off at home with all our bags and baggage couldn't get in because my keys were missing. After rummaging through every bag and pocket we'd to ring DS to come over and let us in. So embarrassing. blush They turned up at our holiday cottage and were posted back to me. So why did I leave them at DD2's house yesterday and have to call DH home from a night out to let me in again?

Speechgirl1 Thu 15-Oct-15 07:06:19

This all rings bells with me but the very worst - and please say I'm not the only one- is how geographically challenged I am! In truth I always have been but now it has reached the point where I walk out of a shop and nine times out of ten turn to walk in the wrong direction - and don't even start me on finding my car in the car park confused

Grandma2213 Thu 15-Oct-15 00:16:59

Thank you for the prize nanny piano but I think there may have been some worthier winners later!!

Nanalogue I came home today after shopping, school runs, etc, etc to find that the oven had been on for almost 7 hours! How lucky am I that the chicken was still in the fridge!

Treebee - keys are the bane of my life. I swear we have a poltergeist who hides them and after several hours of searching puts them back in the obvious place that I first looked in.

I agree stress distorts ones powers to remember! But I think our subconscious remembers anyway! So its possible to recover that period when back on form!!
But memory is all about triggers... Things in our daily life trigger them, I reached a point due to stress , when I would tell myself that I must not forget this? Or that? , try to find a song that reminds me !! Lol. Works more times then I fail !
I had during stressful time, out shopping ...musing somewhat, then came 'too' my eyes didn't recognize where I was !! It was like being lost in a dream!! but I was in a store I knew well !!
Result I felt faint then stupid, shaky ! For I not sure how long, as I came to..I quickly looked to see if anyone had noticed...but no they were all too busy ..lol
Lastly I know for sure now ..only ones self can sort such things out!! No one else can see inside your head!!!!!
Remember all those old sayings ...pick yourself up! ??????
