Can't blame pregnancy then Galen
Cookery books and other books - are you keeping them ?
Last week I put a pan of eggs on to boil, set a timer for ten minutes and then went off to do something else taking the timer with me. The smell of burning prompted a sprint to the kitchen where my pan of six eggs was a charred and blackened mess. I had no memory of the timer going off, but think I may have heard and ignored it.
When putting eggs on to boil today I was very conscious of my previous disaster and so set the timer, put it on the table next to me, and felt confident that I wouldn't repeat my previous disaster. Wrong!!
The smell of burning is permeating the house and my six exploded eggs - again charred and blackened - are now in the bin and the pan soaking in the sink.
There is no problem with my timer and no problem with my hearing - so why didn't it register that I needed to go and take the eggs off? Am I really losing it?
Can't blame pregnancy then Galen
After six pregnancies and five births I would most definitely be done for if that were true kitty.
Crumbs! A whole lot of brainless females wandering around then
!
You'd be the same as me ga. I had 6 pregnancies and 5 babies too and used a calculator to work it out - my brain couldn't cope!
grannyactivist I have now started to buy extremely cheap milk pans to cook frozen peas/sweetcorn as I forget them so regularly and end up with black peas/sweetcorn and ruined pan!
By the way I once made a phone call and said, "Hello this is ...." Yes, believe it or not I forgot who I was!!
loopylou I was about to comment on your post but forgot what it was - sorry! (Seriously it was on page 1!)
grannyactivist Are you under a lot of stress. Not long after my DH passed away I put 6 eggs on to boil and went to have a sit down. An hour later I woke up and ran into the kitchen. The eggs had exploded all over the kitchen there was egg everywhere on the walls, ceiling and floor, the saucepan was ruined.
I had a lot of cooking nightmares when I was younger and always put it down to various stresses and thought no more about it.
As we get older we are inclined to think we're losing it because of all the talk about early onset dementia (can't spell Altzheimers.)
Elegran, of what's left , I hope, or I would be minus 50% and I don't think I'm quite that bad........
I'm slightly reassured that others do similar scatty things, so thanks for sharing.
The Wonderful Man got home from work yesterday and, in spite of my having cleaned every kitchen surface, immediately smelt that something had been burnt. I fessed up about the eggs and the phone call and he was also very reassuring.
What lovely posts from you all. Certainly makes me feel better to have a chuckle and to realize that whatever my DS thinks and jokes about my memory loss, I am not alone. If a prize were to be given for the best post today, it would have to be Grandma 2213. :-)
I use the timer function on my iPad. It's works well as you can use so many different alarm tones (waves , ducks, chimes etc etc) that you would not fail to notice it. Makes for a 'silly half hour' when the GC visit too !
For some reason I got the southern belle, model ex-wife of Mick Jagger in my mind. Just couldn't remember her name.
No end of going through the alphabet helped, though I did keep stopping at J. I do think my brain is going. I had to Google her in the end. Sad. ??
Not at all, LullyDully. I had to get up and Google the name of Coldplay the other day after lying in bed going through the alphabet for it (and no, I can't remember why!).
I can relate to all the above. I spent half an hour looking for my specs when my husband told me I was wearing them !!!
Ga last week I nearly posted a photo of one of my saucepans containing a charred mess of dried apricots that had been simmering in rum and destined for my Christmas pudding.
I was going to call my post 'The curse of Gransnet'
Then I forgot
Hahahaha. Thanks for all of these. Yep, done the egg thing, done the potato thing, done the glasses thing, the alphabet thing. All of them! But it goes back a long way... over 20 years ago DD2 phoned me at work and asked if I'd left something in the oven. "No" I said. "Are you sure?" She pressed. "I think I'd remember if I'd put something in the oven." I said defensively. Got home to charred remains of a chicken welded to roasting dish, which I then remembered putting in the oven a couple of days before! (It was an Aga, no smell of burning or turning on/off involved). My DH still jokes about carbon dating my cooking. ![]()
Has anyone put on a large pot of chicken bones (I freeze mine then use them when I have enough) and chopped up veg to make soup. Then after it has been boiling down for an hour or so, I strain it through a colander. However I have forgotten to put a bowl under said colander and the whole lot has gone down the sink. Ugh!!
I felt such a fool the other day! I was in the checkout queue lidlsa rat her than unload my few things onto the belt, I pushed my trolley to the end where you load it up. The woman behind me cackled and I realised it was my neighbour but from a much posher property. I apologised andnt ed to make a joke of it and the cashier was very nice about it. It put me in mnd of the colcelebrity woman who committed suicide after being found guilty of shop lifting. Two things upset me....one.. the neighbours reaction. If that had been me, I would have said something like "0h, I'm always doing something like that!" And am I going senile??
It would seem that I can't even post a message properly now or is it the fault of predictive texting?'
I left eggs to boil dry in my lodgings when I was 18. Sigh.
Rather more recently, last Sunday in fact, I told DH I was off out for a walk but couldn't find the spare front door key that lives in the kitchen. So I took my key from my handbag. DH is a worried type, who turned the house upside down while I was out, failing to find it.
Meanwhile, heading for the home straight I needed a tissue to blow my nose, and found said kitchen front door key in my trouser pocket.
OK DD has been nagging me for days to tell you this one! Rainy day, shopping with GS2, I get the car open, put him in his seat and off we go. Back at home I reach down for my shopping bag - no shopping bag! Must have left it by the car when I got in. Drive back to Aldi - no one has handed it in. Walk across to Paper Shop - no luck there either. Go home in evil temper and go out later to replace the shopping. Well it's my lucky day because someone has since taken my bag into Aldi and they've kept it in the chiller for me. I go home rejoicing and start unpacking the bag, but there's a strange greyish slime all over everything! Finally realise I must have run over the edge of the bag when I drove away and squashed the bananas I had bought. For some reason it's the squashed bananas that DD finds so hysterically funny
I agree stress distorts ones powers to remember! But I think our subconscious remembers anyway! So its possible to recover that period when back on form!!
But memory is all about triggers... Things in our daily life trigger them, I reached a point due to stress , when I would tell myself that I must not forget this? Or that? , try to find a song that reminds me !! Lol. Works more times then I fail !
I had during stressful time, out shopping ...musing somewhat, then came 'too' my eyes didn't recognize where I was !! It was like being lost in a dream!! but I was in a store I knew well !!
Result I felt faint then stupid, shaky ! For I not sure how long, as I came to..I quickly looked to see if anyone had noticed...but no they were all too busy ..lol
Lastly I know for sure now ..only ones self can sort such things out!! No one else can see inside your head!!!!!
Remember all those old sayings ...pick yourself up! ??????
Thank you for the prize nanny piano but I think there may have been some worthier winners later!!
Nanalogue I came home today after shopping, school runs, etc, etc to find that the oven had been on for almost 7 hours! How lucky am I that the chicken was still in the fridge!
Treebee - keys are the bane of my life. I swear we have a poltergeist who hides them and after several hours of searching puts them back in the obvious place that I first looked in.
This all rings bells with me but the very worst - and please say I'm not the only one- is how geographically challenged I am! In truth I always have been but now it has reached the point where I walk out of a shop and nine times out of ten turn to walk in the wrong direction - and don't even start me on finding my car in the car park
Oh heck, keys..... We had a week away recently and when we were dropped off at home with all our bags and baggage couldn't get in because my keys were missing. After rummaging through every bag and pocket we'd to ring DS to come over and let us in. So embarrassing.
They turned up at our holiday cottage and were posted back to me. So why did I leave them at DD2's house yesterday and have to call DH home from a night out to let me in again?
Went to the cinema this week with DH and stood there like a Wally at the counter because I couldn't remember what film we had come to see.
It was The Martian recommended to us by DS. It was good but too long for. me.
