As I'm fairly new the lovely world of GN. I sometimes wonder about things before I joined. Eg what happened to granddads shed? Has it been demolished or did the GDs just want to spend time with grans' rather than be on their own?
I did ask this on the shed thread but think that it was too dusty in there for anybody to notice.
Also if I can ask another question on same post, every now and then there seems to be murmurs that things may have been a bit different when GN first started out. I do understand that things evolve as time passes. But was just wondering...

I do like pics of cats though, let's have more!

No, no, no! More dogs please grin

rosequartz Fri 09-Oct-15 20:21:50

I am even more careful what I post about now too due to the stuff coming up on Twitter and Facebook
shock I didn't know that happened!

What name do they use and do they have permission?

Ana Fri 09-Oct-15 20:16:51

I do find it strange that some people always think any even the most indirect or general criticism/reservation about GN must of course be about them...

^DO WE WANT ANOTHER HALLOWEEN PARTY*?

Nelliemoser Fri 09-Oct-15 20:04:55

All my musings seem very like mcems. My observations of GN after 3yrs?

What I do not like on here is "last wordism" and the way some people cannot let go of a topic when they can see it is getting increasingly acrimonius.

That is the time I just walk away, I do not see that as giving in to the argument. IMO it's like walking away from a teenager having a strop. I don't stay to provide an audience. It's a win win situation.

Then it appears there are some who enjoy a little stirring and some posters who seem to be very easily stirred.

Some enjoy a challenging debate others hate it.
It does seem that most of those who don't enjoy it are happy just to avoid them, but there are some who get involved but then complain they are being "got at or bullied" when disagreed with.

Often when a topic has run its course it can wander off at a bit of a tangent, as do the best of conversations. There have been some hilarious threads that have drifted off like this. It usually better not to bring the original post back.

Perhaps we all need to lighten up here. We are not the UN debating a crisis. We will probably not change peoples opinions.

I think after you have been on here for a while you can usually get quite a good idea about some of our regular posters general outlook on life.
Which ever political way they lean.

Given that we don't know the real names of many of the people we chat with daily we have all given out quite a bit about ourselves over the years without too many concerns. Is that due to safety in our anonimity"?

Overall there is still seems a lot of generosity and compassion from most members.
PS.
If any of you think I am getting at you in particular in the types of persons I have described, then that is your problem and not mine. If you think the cap fits you choose to wear it.

I love the humour on here.
I love political discussion.
I love our occasional parties.
Everyone seems so nice.
I like chatting about anything really, but there is some stuff that I don't contribute to otherwise I would be at it all day, and feel guilty enough as it is!
I am no good at knowing what to say to grans in great distress, everything I can think of seems so platitudinal ( is there such a word!!)

newist Fri 09-Oct-15 19:45:02

Elegran that's really clever, putting markers were we live, so far there is only 2 markers, Thanks for telling me about it flowers

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 19:31:39

Oh no! It's not aimed at you Gracesgran. It's all about me me me!

I have a large ego. Apparently.

Gracesgran Fri 09-Oct-15 19:23:32

I'm afraid Jbs you haven't stopped me feeling paranoid. I actually think that when I talk about politics I am very earnest. Earnest - resulting from or showing sincere and intense conviction.

Another point which came up was the comment on those "who have nothing better to do than sit with a laptop, computer, tablet, mobile phone all day”. Some people do not have the choice and find it a lifeline and I wouldn't like to think they were being chased away by this comment.

From what I have seen forums change and fade and change and grow. Communication is changing all time so who knows what GN will be like even in a year or two - who knows what the new Grannies and Grandpas will be like smile

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 19:19:02

I don't think I want "intelligent, informative" stuff. I've got Google for that.
And I already know most things

durhamjen Fri 09-Oct-15 19:00:48

Just as long as they do not post the pics on the political threads, roses.
If they do, the cats are fair game.

apricot Fri 09-Oct-15 18:58:55

I think GN has improved as more and younger people have joined. It's still very small and cosy compared to Mumsnet. We need many more people to give a good cross-section of society and more lively, intelligent, informative discussion.
Personally I don't want to read conversations like those overheard on a bus, it would be good if there were members able to offer advice and support on absolutely any topic.

rosesarered Fri 09-Oct-15 18:57:29

I think the only reason there are more political threads is as grumpaa says, we have had an election, and then the Labour leadership! We got a lot of mileage out of that.
Nobody retire to knitting threads because of it though, just say what you think, would be enjoyable if more posters joined in them.
I do like pics of cats though, let's have more!

durhamjen Fri 09-Oct-15 18:55:52

Just you, jingl? That's good, I can stop being paranoid now.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 18:55:13

Elegran I'll give it some thought over my fish and chips. (home-made of course!)

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 18:54:05

Oh! I wish people wouldn't make these general remarks about too much of this and too much of that. I always know it's absolutely all and completely aimed at me - every last word of it! hmm grin

#tenderflower

rosesarered Fri 09-Oct-15 18:53:56

Me neither!

Ana Fri 09-Oct-15 18:38:33

What stuff? Not being on either, I wouldn't know...confused

Welshwife Fri 09-Oct-15 18:36:12

I have been here since the early days but am now reincarnated as it were - I got very het up about the links on Facebook etc so left and changed my ID.
I agree with those who feel it has changed - I think there is much more aggressive posting than previously. I often read but not post now - I am even more careful what I post about now too due to the stuff coming up on Twitter and Facebook.

Elegran Fri 09-Oct-15 18:07:08

You'll have to show us how, JBF. which thread would you like to post on? Or would you like to start a new thread, about something which might, just possibly, have something which can be considered a vagely political connection?

NotTooOld Fri 09-Oct-15 17:56:46

Assertive - good.
Aggressive - not good.
grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 09-Oct-15 17:45:19

People can feel very strongly about politics. Learn to be more assertive. It's good for you.

NotTooOld Fri 09-Oct-15 17:37:06

numberplease - lovely pic. smile

Anya Fri 09-Oct-15 17:34:25

You don't understand the problem Tegan? We're not talking about simply reading them, it's if you wanted to contribute hmm

numberplease Fri 09-Oct-15 17:31:25

Here`s a photo from our Birmingham meet up on October 6th 2012. I`m trying to remember either her real name, or even her username, of the lady sitting at the far end of the table, weqring a purplish blue dress, and she has grey hair. At te meet up I thought she was really nice, with a great sense of humour, but she left Gransnet shortly afterwards, sadly. Most of us there are still here, just a couple who are no longer members, unless they`ve changed names.
