Is it a generational thing?

I agree it's a generational thing. The younger generation seem to use swear words as part of every day vocabulary, DD included angry

This is a generational thing, the young ones nowadays tend to swear readily. I was surprised at DD the other day swearing. I think we were brought up to be ladies in the 50s and 60s.

I once swore in a bus queue and an older lady behind me said 'well we know where shes been brought up-the gutter', I was devasted and took care no to swear for a long time. This was 1970.

Oops, yes, confused Lilygran with you Luckygirl.smile put it down to old age?

And most of us probably didn't swear habitually when younger, either!

Or even Lilygran grin

I think the peer pressure is quite strong as you say - perhaps we have become more civilized as we have aged.

It's a generalisation I know but younger friends and family seem much quicker to express very definite opinions which can border on rudeness. I looked in on Mumsnet and retreated rapidly. There seemed to be little kindness, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. So, yes I agree, generational change.

Apart from a gardening forum, this is the only forum I use,but having had a peek at Mumsnet ,well, they are a bit feisty on there.I think that it is a generational thing as you say Luckygirl, with bad language and so on.

When I dip into Mumsnet, I find really offensive comments and really bad language. Most forums I visit are the same, even ones supposedly devoted to academic discussion. On GN there's strong peer pressure to avoid being rude and intemperate. The moderation is pretty severe, as well. So, is it just because we're older and more easily offended? Or are the women who post on GN different from the kids on Mumsnet? Anyone moved from one to the other?
