Forgot, Stansgran, the chicken can be roasted later in the day and eaten cold or in curries, etc. or frozen- does not need to end up in the bin.
Must say BOGOF offers and perhaps prices too cheap for some foods do seem to encourage waste. Here food is much more expensive, and that does encourage cutting down on waste. If you paid 12 quid for a small chicken (as we do for free range here) - you just don't even consider wasting it. Perhaps? What do you think?
