Anyone else having problems with Facebook [or is my pooter playing up again?].

'Willie' is quite acceptable IMO and I could probably supply you with a dozen or more less acceptable euphemisms too.

Our English kanguage is rich and colourful and should never be censored or limited to basic scientific terms. I love the way words evolve and some are quite amusing, especially to the innocent and unwary.

I'll never forget nearly inhaling my tea when my late (and naive) MiL, talking about some VIP, declared him to be a 'big knob' shock

My parents used to talk about the big knobs at the council or work meaning the bosses, another one of those confusing changes of meaning sent to trap us.

That is a brilliant recovery from a colectomy, Etheltbags, (apologies if it was a bowel resection or colostomy, I don't think you ever told us.)
Main thing, pardon the pun, is that it is all behind you now.

'Nob' is an accepted word for people in high places!

Not 'Knob'! grin grin grin

As in 'hobnobbing'.

I suppose it went out of fashion when 'knob' came into fashion, along with 'gay' and other words, as they acquired new meanings.

Thought the point would lose its punch if I wrote 'Nob' Jane wink

Isn't that part of the name the Top Gear crew have registered for their new programme? [not the gay bit]

Anya Tue 29-Sept-15 13:36:24

Gear Knobs?

Alea Tue 29-Sept-15 15:30:57

"Nobs" as in " nobility". I had not come across the other reference other than in connection with "door knobs" in my innocent youth.
Does nobody remember that lovely door furniture firm
" Knobs and Knockers"? blush which reminds me of that wonderful Blue Peter clip at the door of some cathedral, admiring the medieval knocker. Much sniggering at that!

Of course! Nob not Knob! I knew that really! Obvious! Senior Moment!

(It's all in the pronunciation!)

janerowena Tue 29-Sept-15 18:41:24

Of course it is! grin

I am having lots of senior moments this week (I blame my meds), I told DBH this afternoon that the lavender seedlings in the gravel path were profligate, no - prophetic - no, Prolific! I got there in the end.
