Hello

I am new to Gransnet (my first DGS is due any day now)!

I was wondering how old you were when you had your first compared to the age your children are having theirs? My son is 35 (my DIL 37) and this is their first child.

I had my first son was I was 23, my next at 26 and the third at 34 (lovely surprise that one!)

First at 25, second at 29, miscarriage at 27.
I found out after the fact that DD1 was determined to have her first child at 25 too, and she managed it! She had her second at 27 too.
DD2 is 31 and shows no inclination to have children at all; she's been married 9 years.

I was 30 for the first and 40 for the last- probably the reason why I am not a grandmother yet.

pinkprincess Wed 16-Sept-15 22:40:03

I was 25 and 28.
DS2 became a father at 19, his then wife was 18.
Last year I became a great grandmother at 70.My DGD2 was 20 when she gave birth to him, but her partner is 34.

I was 23 when my first child was born, the next two arrived when I was 35 and (almost) 37 .

Cosafina Thu 17-Sept-15 11:11:26

I was 18 when I had my DD, and she was 38 when she had DGS. I still think I'm a young (and glamorous!) granny! grin

SusanCh Thu 17-Sept-15 11:42:01

I was 30. My daughter is now 27, but I'm still living in hopes of being a Gran. I never felt like an older expectant mother until I went into hospital and there was a sixteen year old in the bed opposite me!

I was 25, 26 and a half and 28 when I had my 3 lovely daughters. My eldest presented us with our first darling grandson 3 years ago when she was 35. No more grandchildren on the horizon yet so just making the best of every minute we get to spend with our lovely boy!

Hello Heirofthedog and welcome

I was 25 with my DS and 29 with my DD. I have a DGS 6 and a DGD 3 (both children my sons who is 40, his wife is 33) My DD 36 has a 12 week scan next week - been trying for 19 months so I am crossing everything.
My mum was 18 when she had my brother 81 years ago at 12 and a half pounds in weight. She was only 18 when he went into the army!!

Chocolatechomp Thu 17-Sept-15 12:39:21

Sorry correction 36 when he went into the army!!

David1968 Thu 17-Sept-15 12:47:45

I was 17. But not a grandma until 54.

luluaugust Thu 17-Sept-15 13:28:27

I was 21,26 and 29, told by midwife I had now got a large family!!!

Dd1 was 27, Dd2 33 and Ds and Ddil 27 and 28.

nipsmum Thu 17-Sept-15 13:31:51

I had my first daughter when I was 26 and was classed as an elderly prim. I felt quite insulted. My eldest daughter was 34 and my younger one was 32.

I was 21,26 and 29, told by midwife I had a large family!!

Dd1 was 27, Dd2 33 and Ddil 28, youngest grandchild now started school bit quiet here.

NanSue Thu 17-Sept-15 13:57:59

23 and 25. Which I thought seemed pretty young at the time but that would still make me 82 if my 8 year old DGS gets married at 30. My mum was still in her 70's when all her GC were married but myself and siblings all married at a young age. My DD was 27 and 33.

grannyJillyT Thu 17-Sept-15 13:58:13

I was 26 with my first son and 29 with my second. The only thing I would change is that I wish I had had more!smile smile

Junie6ann Thu 17-Sept-15 14:05:07

I was 17 19 21 and a lovely surprise at 35!
I understand between the ages 19/21 is physically the ideal age for a woman to carry a baby, I can testify that fact. No money, but a shed load more energy as a young Mum than when our suprise came along.

I was told that I was an 'elderly primgravida' at the ripe old age of 25 when I had my daughter.
What strikes me about this shift of a whole decade or more in having a first child is that our grandchildren, when they have children, are not going to have the army of loving, fit 60 and 70 something grandparents around to help out with childcare and to offer all the enriching things we do with our grandchildren that parents often do not have the time or inclination to do. It is going to be a major change in society that I think few in government or in social planning have recognised.

Luckygirl Thu 17-Sept-15 15:22:16

I was 26 for the first (then 28 and 34) and my DD1 had her first at the same age. The other two had theirs in their 30s.

I worked in a maternity hospital in the 70s and not only was anyone over 30 considered an elderly primp, but you could not adopt over the age of 30, except under exceptional circumstances. It caused untold anguish.

Nannyfrance Thu 17-Sept-15 15:27:49

I was 17 when I had my first son, he was then 20 when he his daughter was born, so I was a Grandma at 37. I had my second son when I was 21 but his first child was born when he was 30.
It seems to be fashionable now to wait until later in life to have children. I have five grandchildren now ranging from 9 to 27. I do sometimes feel like I missed out on life when in my teens but it has been so gratifying to spend time with my grandchildren when I am young and active enough to enjoy them.

hulahoop Thu 17-Sept-15 16:00:03

Greyduster Thu 17-Sept-15 18:25:41

Food for thought, prefect!

Nana3 Thu 17-Sept-15 18:35:51

I had mine at 28 and 29 with 15 months between them, it was too small a gap. The elder one still in nappies and not walking. Sadly they're not good friends now they're adults.

AlgeswifeVal Thu 17-Sept-15 18:48:07

I had my son when i was 22yrs, my daughter at 24 yrs and my 2nd son at 34yrs. Sadly my daughter passed away in 1997 aged 26 yrs. I have 4 grandkids one of these a girl and she looks very much like my late daughter.

KnittyNannie Thu 17-Sept-15 19:59:04

I had my children at 20, 22 and 25. My eldest will be 50 next year. We have been legal guardians to two of our grandsons, aged 14 and 10, for ten years. It's hard work at our age, but we love it, and it's so rewarding. I just don't have quite as much energy as I had when I was 25!!
