Does anyone know.......? Vinegar smell

A bit belatedly, I cook my chutney in a slow cooker overnight in the garage,it confines all odours -but you do require a garage and a powerpoint

Isn't bi-carb amazing? I impressed DH by getting scratches off the car yesterday by rubbing with it. It also gets stains off your teeth if you are a red wine or black coffee drinker.

Fishy smells? Our local Morrisons offer an 'oven bag' service. The fish is sealed in an oven proof bag with pats of your preferred butter, plain, garlic, lemon etc. Brilliant, and no charge!

Bicarbonate of soda, it works for vomit as well.

and dog poo (from children's and grandchildren's shoes when they have been to the park)

I read somewhere that if you want to sell your house quickly, then put on the coffee pot and toast some cinnamon lightly in a pan before the viewers come. I suppose you could make some cinnamon cookies, but that could mess up the kitchen

The two worst smells ever IMO a cauliflower which did a runner from the shopping to wedge itself under a carseat and a bag of smoked mussels left under the driving seat of a hire car in Seattle. I don't really mind the chutney smell. It makes me feel I'm turning into Mrs Tittlemouse.

Any ideas for getting rid of the dreadful smell of milk spilled in the car.
DH did not notice. When I noticed a few days later it was disgusting it had gone underneath the mat. I have tried various things but nothing seems to shift it.Febreze does not work on it.

Can't really help with the vinegar problem, but I suppose everyone knows that bi-carb is magic for just about everything else? I used to use it by the ton when my boys were small as it is especially good removing the odour of vomit.

Sympathise Katek, my DH is exactly the same, at least weekly kippers, smoked mackerel, etc. He puts the extractor on, closes the kitchen door, and leaves the garden door open, but still stinks the house out for over 24 hours. Cannot get the smell out of the mircowave at all (he sometimes uses that) despite cleaners, lemon in water, all the usual tricks.

When I was young, my mother used to make chutney with the excess plums from my Aunt's orchard. The smell was all pervasive. It even got into the airing cupboard and made all the towels, sheets etc smell of chutney. I hated going to school at these times as I was sure everyone could smell it on my clothes. I love homemade chutney and pickles, but rarely make then for this very reason.

The microwave poaches fish excellently, so doing the smoked haddock in there, in milk, covered, might minimise the smell.

DH poaches it in milk annsixty-maybe a change in his cooking method might help. Will suggest it to him. Thanks

can't help with this problem, but it will go away with fresh air so open up doors for a while? Whenever we make chutney the wasps love the vinegary smell and we have to chase them out!

Slightly off subject (sorry) but I was sitting in the garden yesterday next to my OH. He said that he was getting a lovely smell wafting from me. It was garlic!

Katek we also like smoked haddock and since I have become an Aldi shopper I get it from there. Their cooking instructions are to oven cook in lightly oiled foil, I was dubious but did it and it is fine and little or no smell!!
We have it more often now.

Wonder if these tips would work for smoked haddock or mackerel? DH loves both but house smells dreadful for days. I just pray we don't get visitors.

After the event, I know, but when making chutney (or curry) I put the extractor fan on full, firmly shut the door from the kitchen to the rest of the house and have the kitchen door to the garden wide open. That usually stops the smell going further than the kitchen.

SloeGinny I made my chutney on Thursday most of the vingery smell has gone now.

Ah, more prosaically there is a wonderful product by Aesop, called APC (Post Poo Drops ) designed to be used as they say, "after vigorous toilet activity"!!!

I have a vision of Sloeginny retiring to the morning room to go over the household accounts with the housekeeper and the weeks menus with the cook.

No suggestions, just sympathy I am afraid. I was sitting in the train to Birmingham once when I became aware of a strong curry smell. Looked around and realised it was coming off my raincoat which had been hanging in the utility room next to the kitchen (door open) when DH had made a batch of wonderfully spiced chutney.
