There were these little knitted hats, when I was about 8 or 9. 'All' the girls at school had them. They were bonnets, with a plastic Alice Band threaded through the hem at the front so it stayed on without the need for ribbons or knitted straps. At the back there was a single, long tassle sewn in the centre that hung down to the bottom of the bonnet.
I yearned for one of these bonnets, I used to fantasise about owning one. But my mother would never buy anything 'shop knitted', so I wasn't allowed to have one.
We were also never allowed to have 'shop bought' cakes, as they were vastly inferior to homemade cakes and tasted of sawdust. (I found it hard to believe they were worse than my mum's almost inedible jam tarts
)
What did you hanker after as a child?
