How stupid is Corbyn getting

Just seen the latest proposal of that possible Labour leader he wants women only carriages n trains, some of his ideas are stupid hope he does not win, because things like renationalisation of rail etc costs money, to pay for most of his ideas in his world , it would increase the basic rate of Income Tax to 35%.

thatbags Wed 26-Aug-15 09:36:41

No. The implications of the idea are worrying. That does not imply that talking about such things is stupid, nor that the people doing the talking are stupid.

From Twitter:
@IanDunt: Not a fan of segregation as a solution to anything, but making out that Corbyn is a wahhabist mysogenist plainly misrepresents his position.

Some good points on this chap's twitter feed if anyone's interested.

Good to know stupidity is shared equally across all parties in your opinion rosesarered.

I think the ideas raised are interesting, and at this stage that is all they are - ideas. JC is talking about consultation about how to reduce the increasing numbers of sex attacks against women on public transport. A valid topic for consultation I would have thought.

thatbags Wed 26-Aug-15 09:39:29

Segregation never helps make people more civilised. I agree that it's incompatible with the freedom we are used to. If loutish behaviour on trains can't be controlled than neither can this kind of attempt to forestall loutish behaviour.

I sincerely hope train carriage segregation does not happen.

Anniebach Wed 26-Aug-15 09:40:00

A women only carriage would not be segregation,it would be a choice , there is no choice in segregation . Also it is relating to late night travel because of the increasing number of attacks on women .

whitewave Wed 26-Aug-15 09:40:11

Of course it is all so predictable, the press will continue to trash JC. if he wins the leadership the press will be savage.

whitewave Wed 26-Aug-15 09:41:27

Why try to close down a perfectly valid discussion by calling it stupid?

Anniebach Wed 26-Aug-15 09:41:54

Not only the press whitewave

thatbags Wed 26-Aug-15 09:43:53

Good point, ab, at 0940, so long as the choice is real and women are not 'encouraged' to use the women only carriage when they'd rather not.

And the enforcement problem remains: who would pay for it?

thatbags Wed 26-Aug-15 09:46:36

The enforcement I mean is keeping males out of the women only carriages. I don't think sexual predators and violent thugs would be stopped by a notice on a carriage door, or however it was marked.

What about conductors going through? They'd have to lock doors at both ends all the time.

What about women wanting to go to buffet cars, etc etc.

rosesarered Wed 26-Aug-15 09:49:25

this thread is called ' how stupid is Corbyn getting'........ Why should that close down any discussion? No political party/MP's are exempt from stupid ideas though.if there are increasing numbers of attacks on women then late night carriages need railway police, if they still exist, to patrol the carriages.

soontobe Wed 26-Aug-15 09:51:45

Even if it was a lone guard, and the idea was never totally enforced[cant see how it could be], it is scary to be a women travelling alone at night.

The downside that I can see, is it becomes worse for those men who are not out to cause trouble[which is the majority] who are left with a carriage full of men who might want to cause trouble.

Are the incidents of male bad behaviour increasing on trains? Off to google.

thatbags Wed 26-Aug-15 09:53:35

Agreed, roses. Having women only carriages could be seen as a way of copping out of that policing responsibility. In my opinion, money would be better spent on that.

Elegran Wed 26-Aug-15 10:01:44

Whatever happened to the communication cord? Not a good idea to have it apply the brakes immediately (!!) but it would alert a guard to trouble in a particular carriage, and he could go and see what was up.

Are there still communication cords? I don't remember seeing one.

lucyinthesky Wed 26-Aug-15 10:03:17

I think his suggestion is going back to the 50s (and yes I remember the old style train carriages when I was a child)

What next? Women should stay home in the kitchen and not move out of the house except with their husbands? Burkhas to protect us from men ogling?

For what it's worth imo it is wrong to segregate women as Corbyn suggests. Men should be behaving better and THAT is what he should be encouraging.

lucyinthesky Wed 26-Aug-15 10:05:43

Annie Any separation by law is segregation.

vampirequeen Wed 26-Aug-15 10:11:29

It's a suggestion he made in view of the sexual attacks on women on public transport. It may not be a brilliant idea or even feasible but at least it's an acceptance that something needs to be done about the situation. It's not about women be segregated. I agree men should behave better and most do but there are predators who do not behave the way we'd like.

Anniebach Wed 26-Aug-15 10:16:00

And where can I read that Corbyn has said he would make it a law that women must use a women only carriage lucyinthesky?

Ana Wed 26-Aug-15 10:18:58

Presumably it would have to be against some sort of law for men to enter the 'women only' carriages?

Anniebach Wed 26-Aug-15 10:22:37

A spokesperson for Violence against Women thinks more money spent on police , more CCTV cameras which would make it easier to identify offenders and prosecute them - so let a women be assaulted and prosecute the man is better than preventing a woman being assaulted

Anniebach Wed 26-Aug-15 10:25:21

Then let's stop ladies only lavatories Ana , stop stores having ladies only changing rooms , do away with all this so called segregation

Ana Wed 26-Aug-15 10:31:23

I was merely speculating on how men would be prevented from entering the 'women only' carriages, Anniebach.

I made no comment about segregation.

FarNorth Wed 26-Aug-15 10:35:00

How stupid are anti-Corbynites getting? They leap to criticise this idea without having anything sensible to say about the problem of harassment and attacks on women.

Brainstorming I.e. making suggestions, however seemingly silly, can lead to useful solutions.

Gracesgran Wed 26-Aug-15 10:50:52

Except he didn't propose women only carriages did he.

“It is unacceptable that many women and girls adapt their daily lives in order to avoid being harassed on the street, public transport, and in other public places from the park to the supermarket. This could include taking longer routes to work, having self-imposed curfews or avoiding certain means of transport.”

“Some women have raised with me that a solution to the rise in assault and harassment on public transport could be to introduce women only carriages.

“My intention would be to make public transport safer for everyone from the train platform, to the bus stop to on the mode of transport itself. However, I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome - and also if piloting this at times and modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest.”

So he is prepared to consult and discuss something that has been raised with him by some women - obviously a dreadful person that he doesn't impose his view but is prepared to discuss.

Personally I don't think these would be the answer - they were apparently last used in 1977 - but I am very glad he is prepared to look at all solutions.

Tegan Wed 26-Aug-15 10:58:22

That puts an entirely different slant to the comment [which, when reading the headline I thought was a reactionary idea]. He's basically saying, I'm not a woman and I want to discuss with women what problems they face. Women only carriages wouldn't work because I remember being on a train one day when a lot of people insisted on sitting in the first class area because there were no seats; same thing would happen if a women only carriage was half empty. Several times I've been waiting on a platform for a train only to be mown down by men and elbowed out of the way, thereby not getting a seat and having to stand all the way home sad.

Bellanonna Wed 26-Aug-15 11:00:30

When I was commuting to London there was one ladies' only carriage right next to the driver's cab. In those days coaches were divided up into separate compartments that seated 6 on each side. The ladies' compartments were not policed at all - it was felt that proximity to the driver provided a feeling of security. I never used them as they were full,of old ladies! I think the single compartments were dangerous as I once found myself on my own, after people got off. Then a man got on and started playing with himself. He didn't speak to me, but I tumbled off in haste at the next stop and had to wait half an hour for another train. I don't think we should return to ladies' only. Those were different times, and their very existence could attract people with the wrong intentions.
