How stupid is Corbyn getting

Agreed jings and bookdreamer about it being a retrograde step if it were to happen. Let's hope it doesn't.

The underlying problem, and why this suggestion has been made, is that some men are still thugs when it comes to women (some women are thugs too, let's not forget). The issue at large is how society deals with, or rather prevents, assaults from happening. If there is a rising number of late night attacks on women on trains by men then those trains need more policing, more police patrols at stations and even perhaps on trains.

I honestly don't see how carriages called women only carriages would act as a preventive measure.

It doesn't matter if he considers it or not, he is not PM and cannot do anything at all.

I agree with jingle. Been discussing this at work and the reason why we still need Women's Aid, Violence Against Women is because the core problem has not been addressed. She is quite right it would be a retrograde step. Women are not the shy little things they were and men have to be educated that women are not objects.

It has only been put to him. It wasn't his thought. He has said that he might consider it.

Anyway, it only matters what Corbyn will do if he ever actually got into power, and was then in a position to effect change, as it stands, he can't do anything, either stupid or sensible.

It would be a retrograde step. Women are no longer shy little flowers that need protecting. Where two or more women are gathered together, (sorry to be biblical) they should be able to protect each other from verbal harassment.

I don't think anyone is anti-Corbyn, but quite a few of us are anti Corbyn ideas and policies I expect, we can't all think he is the best thing since sliced bread!

If the concept of women only carriages worked 75% of the time, I would still say that it works.

It would be easier to police than the first class carriage. It is still quite easy to notice the difference between men and women without asking them to show their ticket.
As others have said, Corbyn will discuss this idea, among many others, as he was asked to by women.

What nobody appears to have noticed is 12Michael's idea that Corbyn's ideas will put the basic rate of tax up to 35%. That needs to be challenged just as much, and shows how wrong 12Michael is. He is just anti-Corbyn.

They always have all women carriages, and the camera lady followed Anita there.
Indian men are pests, as are some of those here in UK in art classes!

Shock, horror, we have a politician who believes in discussion with the people, who wants to hear their concerns, the man must be stupid , we need more like IDS , don't we ?

When I was commuting to London there was one ladies' only carriage right next to the driver's cab. In those days coaches were divided up into separate compartments that seated 6 on each side. The ladies' compartments were not policed at all - it was felt that proximity to the driver provided a feeling of security. I never used them as they were full,of old ladies! I think the single compartments were dangerous as I once found myself on my own, after people got off. Then a man got on and started playing with himself. He didn't speak to me, but I tumbled off in haste at the next stop and had to wait half an hour for another train. I don't think we should return to ladies' only. Those were different times, and their very existence could attract people with the wrong intentions.

That puts an entirely different slant to the comment [which, when reading the headline I thought was a reactionary idea]. He's basically saying, I'm not a woman and I want to discuss with women what problems they face. Women only carriages wouldn't work because I remember being on a train one day when a lot of people insisted on sitting in the first class area because there were no seats; same thing would happen if a women only carriage was half empty. Several times I've been waiting on a platform for a train only to be mown down by men and elbowed out of the way, thereby not getting a seat and having to stand all the way home .

Except he didn't propose women only carriages did he.

So he is prepared to consult and discuss something that has been raised with him by some women - obviously a dreadful person that he doesn't impose his view but is prepared to discuss.

Personally I don't think these would be the answer - they were apparently last used in 1977 - but I am very glad he is prepared to look at all solutions.

How stupid are anti-Corbynites getting? They leap to criticise this idea without having anything sensible to say about the problem of harassment and attacks on women.

Brainstorming I.e. making suggestions, however seemingly silly, can lead to useful solutions.

A spokesperson for Violence against Women thinks more money spent on police , more CCTV cameras which would make it easier to identify offenders and prosecute them - so let a women be assaulted and prosecute the man is better than preventing a woman being assaulted

Presumably it would have to be against some sort of law for men to enter the 'women only' carriages?

It's a suggestion he made in view of the sexual attacks on women on public transport. It may not be a brilliant idea or even feasible but at least it's an acceptance that something needs to be done about the situation. It's not about women be segregated. I agree men should behave better and most do but there are predators who do not behave the way we'd like.
