Downstairs toilet

We had those, Tricia, in, or rather outside , several houses. One was an earth closet (yuck!). I still have the little Kelly lamp that used to burn in there to provide a bit of light and (supposedly) stop the pipes freezing in Winter.

In our last family house there was a coalhouse with entrance from outside. So we converted that into a toilet - it was directly below the only other toilet, upstairs.
Going back a bit, I had a school friend who lived in a miner's cottage, and their toilet was a "netty" at the end of the back garden - rather chilly in winter!

I remember staying in a pub once that boasted en suite bathrooms. We entered the room and saw only a big fitted wardrobe with double doors, turns out the bathroom was in here! Snug!

Lol dustyangel! There were Daubenton's bats living under the bridge near to us but they hadn't migrated to the loo.........as far as I know Maybe should have checked the loft when we moved.

At the moment we live in the equivalent of a bungalow, with only one bathroom. BUT and it is a big but, we have an annexe with another bathroom in it.
We hope to rebuild the annexe and there will still only be one bathroom but again we will only have to walk a few yards for the other one.

Bat grins? Bat grins?? What a wonderful picture that conjures up! BATHROOMS! iPad has a life of its own.

We are in a bungalow and have two bathrooms-main family bathroom and our ensuite. Last house had 3 bat grins and a loo so not sorry to lose a couple for cleaning!

We have moved house several times over the years and 2 loos was always part of the 'must haves'. Even more important now we're older! There are things I would be prepared to sacrifice rather than 'loo space(s)'.

our downstairs loo is just by the front door.
OH has claimed this as his own and only shares with Henrietta as we don't have a cupboard for her.
Unfortunately being so near the front door visitors can often be treated to a blast of trumpet voluntary,Handels water music,and unfortunately at times we have had to blame accompanying smell from the fields at the back muck spreading,or the dog.
I have tried unsuccessfully to persuade him that downstairs is just for tinkles,mind you have done it out all blokey with a nautical theme,so have only myself to blame.
One and only time I got caught short,a chugger knocked at the door and I was too embarrassed to come out and had to wait while OH got shot of him....also you have to remember to pull down the blind as you can be seen from passers by

When we moved here the downstairs loo had just a basin and loo in a room which was eight feet square so it was like sitting in a cave and all noises were amplified. ?

I love that episode of Mrs Brown. Our house used to be two flats and the downstairs loo is just like hers!

Oh alright then....... An en suite for guests as we seem to have a lot of visitors( we spoil them really.) Probably won't go ahead though, a bit too costly.

Crikey, roses, why would you need three loos in a bungalow...?

Sarah, plenty of bungalows have several loos these days, we have two, and we're considering a third but may not go ahead . you can always have a small en suite bathroom put into a double bedroom.

We are considering down sizing but we will then end up with only one loo instead of our present 3 because bungalows in the main only have one loo. It sounds silly but somehow we are going to have to find some where with 2 toilets. Why this feature hasn't been incorporated in modern homes since the war I'll never know. It is not a luxury in my opinion. Thanks for the information on Saniflow I will google it. We have been told not to leave our house but put in stair lift instead. But even though Stannah stair lifts are very versatile it would feel like turning my lovely house in to 'an old folks home' My only experience of maserators was at an hotel where when you flushed the loo 'stuff' came up through the shower drain, yuk. Stannah have a very nice show room in Andover and will demonstrate 4 different types. The sales man was most helpful and they can make a stair lift for almost any situation. The reason I know now we should downsize is because I don't want to get to a situation where I can't keep my house and garden looking as I want them and I have to get other people to do it for us. I shall hate doing it but it makes sense to us.

We had our bathroom re-done from scratch last November, and for a few days it was very embarassing having to keep asking the plumber if we could use the toilet............especially when he`d taken it out in preparation for fitting the new one, and had to keep putting it back in situ for our use for those few minutes! Another toilet would have been wonderful.

It's great when the Grandchildren visit straight in there from the garden. Saves a dash up the stairs ��

I really appreciated my downstairs loo a few years ago when I was having a new bathroom fitted. I did not have access to the loo upstairs for days and could not see myself using a bucket. where would it be emptied?!

The tiler took forever so I found myself having to come downstairs during the night =I was so glad that I had the downstairs loo.

Very handy to have two when you both come back from a day out and are bursting.

We live in a bungalow but we still call the 'spare' loo the downstairs loo
