It's not often that I say anything positive about the royal family but I am impressed that Prince William is working on the Air Ambulance. He could have stayed in his cotton wooled privileged lifestyle but he's actually doing a job that's worthwhile and really helps other people.

I think he will be "one of the chaps". It's in his nature.

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 19:01:30

Ceesnan, your claim that I Implied it is just how you chose to twist what I did say , fact is I did not say or imply such claims , I don't 'do' imply, I just say

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 18:55:29

He isn't going to be 'one of the chaps' as in best friends but I can't see why he can't manage to be 'one of the chaps' on the job- he has managed it elsewhere. Lots of us don't want to be more than that with work colleagues.
They will soon forget who he is and just work as a team once the novelty wears off.

Ceesnan Wed 15-Jul-15 18:30:15

If you haven't said it Anniebach then you certainly implied it. I'm not sure why you think he won't be able to have a happy relationshipnwith the rest of the crew, after all, he managed it in Anglesey.

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 17:55:19

All I have said is I think his is a lonely life when not within his own circle , not criticised him taking the job, not said he would be of no use, not said he will not mix, not said he he will be isolated from his crew

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 17:48:50

Jane, I have not said he will gain nothing, I have not said no one will talk to him, I have not said his training as an air ambulance pilot would not benefit others, all I have said and still say - he will not be and could not be what some claim , one of the chaps , you certainly exaggerate Jane

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 17:38:57

I am sure that once they get used to him he will just be part of the team. My experience of any sort of rescue team is that they are all the team and their job is to make people feel at ease and not to have a situation where you say 'your job is to pilot the helicopter- please keep your place and don't interact' !!
I do feel sorry for him, whatever he does is wrong for some people! At least this way he is doing a very useful and necessary job -and one where he meets ordinary members of the public.

Luckygirl Wed 15-Jul-15 17:06:16

Let's cut this guy a bit of slack! - even if you are a staunch republican, he didn't ask to be born into royalty and it seems to me he is doing his best to use his position to be of some use to everyone. Air ambulance staff work as a team and I am sure he will finish up as just one of them, even if there is a brief period of discomfort.

vampirequeen Wed 15-Jul-15 15:47:59

It won't be possible to vet everyone he comes in contact with or secure the areas he will be landing. Can't we just give the lad credit for not sitting in his ivory tower looking down on the rest of the world. At least he's trying to so something useful and using a skill we all paid for him to acquire.

Jane10 Wed 15-Jul-15 15:44:22

Well annie you're absolutely determined that he'll gain nothing from this experience, nothing from using his training up till now for the benefit of others, that nobody will talk to him. I sincerely hope that you are completely wrong. He'll do a wonderful job and will be widely appreciated I'm sure.

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 15:30:06

It is a very small space- I am sure they speak!

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 13:49:51

No the people they are rescuing will not be vetted, neither will they be in much contact, William is not a paramedic he is there to fly the ambulance, the pilot keeps the ambulance ready to take off the paramedics deal with the injured , if the injured have to be winched into the craft the paramedics strps them the pilot operates the lifting gear from inside the craft

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 13:31:04

I don't think that any army officer is 'treated as one of the men'- I agree with annodomini.

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 13:29:13

The people they are rescuing will not have been vetted. They are saving lives- not working out if the medical emergency is 'the right sort'!

annodomini Wed 15-Jul-15 13:02:11

Neither Prince Harry nor any of his fellow officers would be 'one of the men'. That's the Army.

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 12:40:44

Oldgreymare , Harry was not treated as one of the men, this is a fact.

I am not saying they are disliked, I am saying that they can and will be one of the chaps is not possible

Oldgreymare Wed 15-Jul-15 10:49:49

I'm sure they will have been vetted Anniebach but I can't imagine that all the people he comes across will tug the forelock! I seem to remember that Harry's 'pals' in the army expressed 'solidarity' by posing nude. PW and PH cannot be universally disliked. By the way I have no strong views on the retention of the monarchy or not, just think that PW, in particular, should be allowed to join the rest of the human race if he wants to.

Anniebach Wed 15-Jul-15 09:35:38

Well, if you think those who will work with him have not been vetted, not instructed on protocol , he will be just one of then chaps and will have a deeper understanding of the working man, so be it . Many believe Harry was one of the chaps when in the army !

glammanana Wed 15-Jul-15 09:33:27

I have to agree OGM both Princes will be accustomed to the banter and I can't think of a better job for PW at least he is putting the cost of his training to good use so well done to him.

annodomini Wed 15-Jul-15 09:30:46

Good grief, merlotgran, what makes you think that 'etiquette and good manners' are the norm at university? Even fifty years ago at St Andrews, formality was a very small part of our lives. And as for bad language, I don't doubt that Etonians and St Andreans can be just as foul mouthed as the comp kids I see (and hear) queuing for Gregg's pasties at lunch time!

Oldgreymare Wed 15-Jul-15 09:04:43

I have to join in this discussion to say that PW has done it all before! He flew 'the Big Yellow Bird' from RAF Valley and flew rescue missions in the mountains and along the coast. He has experienced mess-room banter, will be fine!

vampirequeen Wed 15-Jul-15 08:29:38

Once the novelty wears off he'll just be part of the team otherwise the team won't be able to work properly and the air ambulance service wouldn't want that.

Once he's part of the team he'll hear all the usual stuff you hear at work. What was on the tv, who has a hangover, who's going on holiday and where, who's had a row with the wife/husband....in fact all the everyday gossip that takes place in normal work situations. I guess he'll be more careful about what he says than the other way round.

Jane10 Wed 15-Jul-15 08:24:02

He'll be no stranger to salty language -just think of his Grandad! Not famed for politeness.

Lona Wed 15-Jul-15 08:01:56

Anniebach I don't know why you assume that " no one would put him in an embarrassing position etc.", there's always someone happy to ask difficult questions.
His team may not all be Royalists.

Leticia Wed 15-Jul-15 06:58:32

I expect he will be fine- they are a team doing a job and not at a social occasion! Some of the situations that they will be dealing with will be emotionally upsetting and difficult and will create a bond. It isn't like an airline pilot just getting from A to B.
