I could do the leaping straight off a horse because one of the ponies in the riding school that I used to go to was a bad tempered, though utterly beautiful golden little brute. She would suddenly decide that she had had enough and go down and roll. When I saw the ears go back, I knew it was going to happen and I didn't want a broken leg, so kicked the stirrups and jumped. I was four or five years old – and, many years later, my mother told me I was an irresponsible parent.
