Make a new word by changing, adding or subtracting a letter, without altering the letter order (the new letter doesn't have to go at the beginningor end, it can be anywhere.)

How about allowing the letters to be shuffled? Having to keep them in the same order seems to be too restrictive.

It needs refining - some way of changing tack when it becomes impossible to get any more words. Maybe use any three letters of the latest word to start a new direction? But if it gets too complicated it becomes chaos (what am I talking about? It already is chaos.)
