The most embarrasing moment of my life.......

(92 Posts)
Sillyoldbird Sun 31-May-15 18:13:51

.......happened last night. And I don't think I'll ever live it down. Seriously!

I can see that it was hilarious to those who witnessed it and can manage to laugh about it to a point, but really I just feel totally humiliated. It was in front of a large crowd of work colleagues on a celebration night out.

Please someone tell me that I'll get over it. At this pont in time I am cringing every 15 seconds and thinking of emigrating so I don't have to face them again.

HELP!

Ashtree I haven't heard the expression 'get off with' for many years. You've taken me back to my 16 year-old self blush

Marmight Your embarrassing moment was most definitely the Chairman's fault. He was clearly what in ballroom dancing circles is known as 'a showy dancer' and regarded with scorn. smile

A pair of my pants once found its way into my handbag. 30 years ago, but a friend was reminiscing the other day about "when you pulled those pants out of your bag". They weren't clean. And that was by no means my most embarrassing moment.

suzied Mon 01-Jun-15 12:41:00

Have just remembered the story of a friend of mine who tied her long hair back in the shower with her (clean) pair of pants. One day she was in a rush and travelled to work on the tube and spent half the morning at work before she remembered that she still had her pants on her head....

Mishap you are spot-on about the Dolly Parton envy induced over-reaction.

Daffydil that is horrendous. You are very brave for going back! But you haven't posted on the wrong thread?

Jinglbellsfrocks I am thinking of a witty retort as we speak!

janerowena Mon 01-Jun-15 12:25:54

sillyoldbird I know someone else that happened to, those things should come with a warning, and I bet any woman there would sympathise.

I had a bra malfunction at work once - I was new, and just bending over my new filing cabinets when my bra came undone. I rushed into the loos, hoicked my top over my head (or tried to) but the roll neck got stuck on my hair pins - I heard a loo flush and saw a pair of men's shoes appear under the hem of my jumper. I was on the wrong floor for the ladies...

Ten minutes later I was back in my office when my boss brought round the chairman to introduce me. I recognised the pinstriped trousers immediately. blush I don't think he told anyone, but it did play on my mind for quite some time!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Jun-15 12:00:39

Should have said "under ladies' clothing"

#ipoorly.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Jun-15 11:59:30

I think you should just come out with it,if anyone does joke about it. Something like, "yeah well, you don't know what goes on ladies' clothing these days". Which is probably true.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 01-Jun-15 11:54:52

daffydil! That has got to be the worst! grin

You poor thing.

I`ve posted this before in the past on some other thread. A few years ago, we were in our touring caravan on a site in Cornwall. Now, hubby doesn`t wear underwear, never has, and one morning, he was standing in the open doorway of the caravan, immediately facing the next caravan, where the family, including children, were eating breakfast at the window. Suddenly, unexpectedly, his shorts fell to his ankles! For the next few days, until they left the site, I absolutely kept well away whenever they were around, even though it wasn`t me who`d been exposed, it was me who was the most embarrassed!

elena Mon 01-Jun-15 11:51:33

Honestly, Sillyoldbird, that is so not worth worrying about....really not. Turn it into a funny story and dine out on it smile

I seriously doubt i) anyone noticed ii) anyone realised iii) anyone thought anything of it if they had realised/noticed and even if iii) happened, and they did notice, it doesn't matter.....what do you care what they think? You have not done anything wrong in any way.

They definitely won't have been emailing about it.

Even if (and I doubt this would happen) someone says to someone else 'did you see that woman's chicken fillets pop out of her dress on the dance floor?' and the other person says 'yes' and laughs a bit....what does it matter? It does not matter a jot. They would not be laughing at you, but the incident...and it doesn't matter!

It wouldn't bother me, even if they emailed a picture of it to everyone's Facebook....I do understand you are genuinely upset at the thought, but you will get over it smile

daffydil Mon 01-Jun-15 11:36:54

Katek I think you are right. It would be a kindness.

Katek Mon 01-Jun-15 11:33:00

It's the vet for you, Daffydil!!

daffydil Mon 01-Jun-15 11:31:41

So here goes. A few months ago I was flat on my back having an internal examination by a consultant gynaecologist. He told me to cough and at the same time pressed down hard on m pelvis. A stream of pee shot out over the couch. Fortunately it did not reach him but I have another appointment later this month and wonder if it is recorded on my notes blush.

I have just created another embarrassing moment. I posted this on the wrong thread. How did I do that? Should I be put down?

Katek Mon 01-Jun-15 11:30:31

Oh Marmight.....what a wonderful description! I'm crying with laughter-it's like something out of a comedy movie.

Silly-try not to worry, most people probably won't even have noticed. Was the dance floor crowded? If so, your mishap was even less likely to be spotted. I sympathise with how you're feeling though-I once tripped over the strap of my handbag getting out of the car and landed on my hands and knees in the road directly opposite a crowded bus shelter. I sprung (v loose terminology there) to my feet as rapidly as possible and tried to pretend I was fine and didn't have bits of road surface embedded in my knees and palms!

Riverwalk Mon 01-Jun-15 11:29:43

The drummer was not best pleased grin

Marmight Mon 01-Jun-15 11:13:18

Love this talk of chicken fillets grin
I was at a 'posh' ball, some years ago now, and was being whirled round the dance floor by the Chairman. I was wearing shoes which were eversoslightly too big and as we pranced past the band, I was whirled rather too vigorously, shot out of my partner's grip, lost both shoes and landed on the drum kit - you can imagine the noise of drums and cymbals reverberating under my not too delicate proportions. The drummer was not best pleased. I think that has to be the most embarrassing of my many faux pas and I have never again set foot on a dance floor. blush

Mishap Mon 01-Jun-15 10:31:43

It's not humiliating - it's funny! I think that you are so sensitive about not being Dolly Parton that this is colouring your reaction - which I personally think is an over-reaction. Let it go and let it all hang out!

Sillyoldbird Mon 01-Jun-15 10:06:58

Haha Marelli you're absolutely right. And I loved NanaDenise's sorry about her gran too.

Keep them coming. Each one makes me feel that little bit better
x

Marelli Mon 01-Jun-15 10:02:39

NanaDenise, that happened to me as well! The wee pad from one side of the Wonderbra jumped out and fell on the floor, so I whipped the other one out while no-one was looking (I think) hmm! Love the story about your Nan!
My friend's knicker elastic broke while she was on a pleasure boat trip, so she carefully slipped them down, stepped out of them and shoved them in her handbag. She then realised that there was a family with their camcorder running. However, no doubt over the ensuing years, this wee film will have brought a laugh to anyone watching it.
Sillyoldbird, if the staff at your place of work have no more to interest them than someone's downfall (or falldown!) then they need to be felt sorry for. Not worth even thinking about. Next time you come across any of them, just smirk - and think about them sitting on the toilet.....that's always a nice leveller! grin

Sillyoldbird Mon 01-Jun-15 09:46:33

Soon to be is right. They don't work in my office but in the organisation I work for and as they are so bitchy and always trying to get one over on each other I think they will be e maling etc. I am paranoid.

It is the humiliation I can't cope with. But actually I'm finding that I'm starting to feel better. Not much but I do keep smiling to myself. It was really, really funny.......just not when your on the recieving end.

This is really helping though. A good mixture of common-sense, reassurance and similar daft-Ness is making me come to my senses.

Someday all this will be a distant memory.........

Lona Mon 01-Jun-15 09:31:07

silly you seem to be able to laugh at yourself on here, so try to laugh at yourself when you're at work. If anyone says anything, make a joke and it will soon die a death.

NanaDenise Mon 01-Jun-15 09:29:04

Oh dear! I really feel for you. I imagine that most people wouldn't have noticed. However, you are not alone. My DD2 was dancing at our local barn dance with best friend who suddenly stopped and said 'Are you wearing a Wonderbra?' The answer was 'Yes'. BF said 'I have your padding under my foot'. Quick dive out of the marquee and all was made well.
My nan who had a mastectomy and a prosthetic breast (always wore a brassiere, not bra, and never done up) went to the door to collect the milk that had just been delivered and bent down. Breast landed on the floor at milkman's feet. 'Oh! I just lost my sex appeal!' she said. Laughter mended all.
I am sure that in time, you will find this less embarrassing and find the humour in an awkward situation.

soontobe Mon 01-Jun-15 09:24:20

It is the humiliation that is getting to you isnt it?
