whitewave, I'm a footie fan. Mum was born in 1922 and lived in manchester, her family was CofE and traditionally, they supported City, she supported United. Her father was horrified that she supported the "left footers'. She somehow ensured all 3 of her daughters were, and remain Man U supporters. I married a southern red (that's someone from London who nonetheless supported ManU from the age of 8, he was born in 1950, long before ManU became a global team) anyway, that's a summary of some of the complexity of footi fan dome.

So - having provided a none essential and very northern England and northern european take on footi I feel partially qualified to say that there is a Big Problem between Russia, Qatar and the corrupt people in Fifa (who we definitely won't name) alongside their supporters, none of whom are northern europeans, and we northern(and southern) europeans. It's difficult init. If "we" split from Fifa, as I feel we should, we'll be accused of racism and colonialism.

I'm already apologising if this summary is incorrect, biased or inflammatory. I don't like corruption and I love footi. I'm watching Channel 4 news as I type. The number of deaths of workers building the various stadiums in Qatar is beyond anything that would be "accepted" in northern europe. I suppose that's another thread altogether but I feel so uncomfortable and cross about this whole situation

I mean about the principle of the CEO resigning when it's discovered that people have rigged things and bribed others. How many bank CEOs have resigned?

What? I don't know enough about this really. I tend to ignore anything to do with football.

Are they looking at the votes for Qatar and Russia? If not they ought to as I can remember D of C and D B looking absolutely confounded when the results were read out/

I'm not - I am not sure how it works but I think that the whole football association in the world of football should either start an alternative FIFA or everyone should resign and the whole thing rebuilt without any corruption and absolute transparency.

We're tiptoeing round a certain situation in a way in which the print and broadcast media are not. How very restrained we are!

I think any chair nowadays has to realise that the buck stops with them, and that they have to make the most of what could be a potentially short reign, especially in that business. It's far easier to winkle out fraudsters nowadays.

If someone was to be overseeing a situation such as the hypothetical one mentioned, and didn't offer to resign, would it be reasonable to assume that the person was suffering from some form of medical condition and was therefore not fit to do the job?

The old boys network always wins in these situation not true honest behaviour.

Any chair person of any company or public body should immediately offer their resignation when there are allegations of serious financial irregularities; they either know about the alleged offences and are therefore liable to be charged with civil or criminal charges or they are so bloody incompetent that they should not be in the job. There can not be any argument otherwise surely? The alleged offences of which we speak have been public knowledge for many years, or at least they have been if you read 'Private Eye' and there is more to come. Allegedly.

I think its better not to mention names or alleged offences in any situation where prosecution is being considered.

The wrong remarks and speculation might mean that any potential guilty parties might decide to argue that they could not get a fair trial because of what has been said in the media.

If this happened the truly guilty might get away scot free and that would not be a good outcome.

Hypothetically of course, mentioning no specific incidents, or Teflon coated alleged offenders.

I also think that the chair is not a person to fall on their sword and is Teflon coated. Too many others may be redundant if the chair goes.

I agree with pompa but do any of us think that is really going to happen?
