Drive me nuts! It can be a stupid song from an ad or an old pop song or even a piece of classical music, but one phrase gets stuck in my head and goes round and round and round! Today it's a piece of Puccini.

I used to sing nursery rhymes to absentdaughter when I was changing her nappy in order to distract her. My bedroom where I usually did this was next door to the kitchen of an upstairs flat. On a summery day when the windows were open I could sometimes here the thirty-something man next door singing Baa Baa Black Sheep as he prepared his breakfast.

For the last couple of days I have had that ghastly and ancient Cher song – Boom, boom, he shot me down/Boom, boom that awful sound… going round in my head. I think I'd rather have Ba Baa Black Sheep.

Aaargh....Roses!! You're right-it's back! Not only am I hearing that very phrase I can now see him teetering down the road as well!

From choir - Down by the Riverside. Just dreadful, it's been in my head since last night. 24 hours of it and I don't even like it much.

Ana Thu 21-May-15 22:30:28

I've got that now - thanks, janerowena! hmm grin

Years ago, I used to make a weekly visit a neighbouring office to use their computer to feedback my Department's work reports. Purposely, I would gently hum or whistle 'Raindrops keep falling of my head', as I input the data. The staff in the office would all be doing it later that week. I did this for 3 to 4 months before they realised I was doing it on purpose.

wink

OK, so now I have Down by the Riverside jostling for attention with Raindrops keep falling on my head. Cheers janer and Knowsley angry grin

Mine earworm today has been "Bohemian Rhapsody" which we are doing at choir.

The Noise Virus Goon Contest tomorrow night should be good for a few ear worms.

janerowena Fri 22-May-15 13:50:51

I had just got rid of 'Down by the Riverside' when I stupidly read this thread, and now it's firmly back again.

It certainly allows us Altos to enjoy those low notes.

shock How did that mere boy get such a deep voice?

Certainly no ear wormery from that song!

What a great term for these songs, I have never heard it before. I am never without one, even throughout the night it goes on. Currently it is 'Soldier Soldier, Won't you Marry Me' resulting from the thread on here about school singing. Before that it was 'Mares eat Oats', which I absolutely hate, and 'Up' by Olly Murs and Demi Lovato, which I actually do like.

AlieOxon Fri 22-May-15 17:13:54

How about 'Doe, a deer, a female deer'......

hildajenniJ Fri 22-May-15 17:26:48

I'm still humming "She wore red feathers". I really must listen to it all the way through, then perhaps it will go away!

rosesarered Fri 22-May-15 18:54:04

It's only really catchy tunes that do this isn't it,I once had I Got You Babe in my head for almost a week after watching Groundhog Day.

Ana Fri 22-May-15 19:05:04

roses, I now have Bobby Vinton/Jim Reeves or whoever going round in my head yet again and it's all your fault! grin

I wouldn't say the song was catchy, rather melancholy really, but it's amazing how you remember the ones that were the backdrop to your youth!

Ana Fri 22-May-15 19:06:43

(Actually, having googled it, I think it must be the Ronnie Carroll version going on in my head...hmm)

Grannyknot Fri 22-May-15 19:08:51

Mine today is "Oh, the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me, her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew ..."

Where it came from to be in my head today, I have no idea! I haven't heard it for years.

rosesarered Fri 22-May-15 19:31:16

GrannyKnot, you have to sing it as ' the YELLER Rose of Texas'!
Ana, what is this Ronnie Carroll/Bobby Vinton\Jim Reeves thing that I am responsible for? I deny it, whatever it is!
Her's a nice ear worm for you though....Two Little Boys dum dum de dee!

rosesarered Fri 22-May-15 19:34:42

What please is the one where the choir just counts rather than use words. I love it, but don't know what it is.
I know it's very modern.

numberplease Fri 22-May-15 21:42:32

For some unknown reason, "Take Me Back to the Black Hills", from Calamity Jane, has been buzzing round in my head all day today!
