Apparently Fanny Farnackapan is a term of endearment.

Which is how I understood it, but until I looked it up I had no idea and wondered if it was rude.

I used to get called that by my parents and used it myself.

you're right jingle, it's now pronounced "ginga". It's also seen as being cool to be a ginga - could Prince Harry have influenced this at all….

I wondered was there some specific negative inference to 'ginger' that I wasn't aware off.

My DSSs sometimes tease me about being/having been ginger, 'ginge' because they're doing their best to tease.....and I reply that us gingers are very special and unique in a good way and they should be very envious. Especially as two of my darling step gc have glints of ginger auburn, as also has their mum who coincidentally happens to be my second cousin.

Mother called me Fanny canaferpot. I wonder where this came from? My older DGDs think this is very funny.

I was born Ginger, not a red head, When I was 5 at infants school, they used to sing "Ginger your barmy, your fathers in the army" needless to say I got upset, Then as I got older "you were left out in the rain and went rusty" I was covered in freckles, I realised I was in the minority, and gradually came to enjoy the fact that my hair was a definite colour with gentle waves in it

When talking about someone whose name he couldn't remember my late DH used used to refer to them as 'Fannyflapdoodle'!
It's such a shame some of these words can no longer be used in their original context. I had a friend named Gay when I was at school. No longer in use I am sure.

I remember really envying a girl at school who was ginger haired, with freckles.I always thought she looked as though she was looking out through a sunny afternoon. We must have been about nine or ten at the time.

When I was at school in the 50's, ginger haired children did get a lot of abuse from songs/rhymes. I was never aware of our daughter getting similar abuse when she was at school, and now red hair is highly regarded.

GS whos 8 came in last Thursday sobbing (yes he is sensitive) the older boys round the corner (they play in little clusters) had made up a rhyme.

he was heartbroken as not just one lad chanting it but 2 or 3 of them round about 12 yrs old,,GS said wishes he was a girl then he could dye it!! took me all my time not to go round to their parents as would prob make it worse..think Stepdad had a walk round, sought out the main culprit and reminded him it was a form of Bullying!!

DD had beautiful light gingery hair, she had more or less set up a website for Gingers, she made badges etc (Gingers will steal your soul) she us very proud of her hair colouring and always has been which I'm glas seeing as though she is 40 lol.

I sued to get Ginger Nut, rusty, specky four eyes as I wore glasses and don't ask about when I had to have a "Patch over my round blue clinic glasses)!!

I was another Fanny Fanackapan and my mother called me Fanny (sometimes Fanny Adams) until the day she died.

I am sure that my mother who used to say 'sweet Fanny Adams' had no idea what it meant. She would have been so embarrassed.
