Is wolf-whistling a sex crime?

The DT is reporting that police are investigating after a young woman complained after "lecherous" builders whistled at her. At risk of being shot down, when I was young and in my prime I would have complained if they didn't whistle at me.

Indeed - disagree with the substance of the post, but do not abuse the poster.

durhamjen Sat 02-May-15 20:39:58

On a different thread, jingl said "I didn't think you were as thick as two short planks" to me.
I asked HQ if this was acceptable. The response was that she wasn't insulting me, it was more of a compliment.

Nobody posted that those who didn't like wolf-whistling were 'man haters' or 'must be lesbian'.

Someone did post that some women feel they can't voice their views without being labelled as such, but that's not quite the same, is it?

Ana Sat 02-May-15 20:46:03

durhamjen, why on earth would you feel you had to ask GNHQ about that? What planet do you live on?

durhamjen Sat 02-May-15 20:49:26

Same one as you, Ana.

Ana Sat 02-May-15 20:52:02

Sometimes I doubt it. I could understand you reporting a post which had accused you of being as thick as two short planks, but not one in which the poster said they didn't think you were...confused

petallus Sat 02-May-15 20:59:57

Did someone say we must be lesbians? Oo-er!

Let's not all start picking on trisher now.

amarmai Sat 02-May-15 21:01:00

there appear to be 2 classes of gners 1] gets to say what ever they like 2] gets attacked by those who can say whatever they like. Sounds like schoolyard bullying to me.

petallus Sat 02-May-15 21:01:39

I have always found the expression 'old geezer' amusing. It is one of the nicer things I call DH sometimes.

Soutra Sat 02-May-15 21:05:56

Actually Ana the deleted post did suggest that someone /some " man-hating over-judgemental women who post on here could I suppose be lesbians " although she admitted "there's nothing wrong with that", I may not have the exact words, but she will remember what she said.
It has got nasty as often happens when a "joke" which I assume was what Pompa intended, misfires. The Alzheimer's jibe (from the same poster) which alas, Pompa got involved in, may also have been meant to be funny, but wasn't.

Soutra Sat 02-May-15 21:17:22

I have just realised more than one post has been deleted on this thread, I am talking about today, at 10.02.

Ana Sat 02-May-15 21:23:28

Oh, I hadn't realised there had been any deleted posts either...

POGS Sat 02-May-15 21:43:53

For goodness sake 'thick as two short planks'.

DJ and those who are defending their posts I would like to remind you of the bile pompa had to take.

He was said to be patronising and sexist. Accused of leching young women/girls. Made sleazy sexist jokes . Ogled women and had a sexist attitude. Hoped pompa meant what he said - leaving GN. Thought it was the rambling fantasies of some inadequate old geezer. Pleased he had left and accused of sleaze. Called a miscreant who stirred up trouble. A vitriolic post was deleted but only after it had been on the board some while so I am sure most of us read with an uncomfortable feeling.

If you don't think these posts were offensive and of a personal nature then I don't know what is.

We all have a right to post in a manner that can lead to showing absolutely no doubt as to how we disagree with another poster but thread after thread has turned , by some, to include nasty personal attacks. The more apathetic we become the more it gives the impression we are all prepared to tolerate the use of such posts.

Maybe a lot of what has been happening is of our own making by not getting involved when we see personal comments made to others that we would not possibly accept if made toward ourselves. For that reason I am pleased to see this thread has turned away from the course it was taking yesterday but sadly at the expense of a member, or so it appears at the moment.

grumppa Sat 02-May-15 21:54:41

Well said, POGS.

trisher Sat 02-May-15 21:59:51

Actually I never used "fantasies" Pogs. What I was actually trying to do was to say that the comments made by pompa were not ones that most of the young men (and some of the older ones) of my aquaintance would even consider making. I know that some people considered his remarks to be humerous, the problem with that being that in my experience people who make jokes about controversial things often hold the views they express as a joke- Jim Davison, Roy "Chubby" Brown. And having made such comments perhaps he should be made aware of the impression he was creating. I hadn't read many of his posts before as some people seemed to have so could only judge by what I read here. I am accused of playing the man not the ball, well it is the 21st century and the bodyline testmatch was some time ago, so maybe it is permissable to bowl a few close things.

POGS Sat 02-May-15 22:21:13

trisher

As you have responded so will I. Your post read.

"Oh it's a joke! I thought it was the rambling fantasies of some old geezer and they were best ignored while the rest of us continued our discussion. Just a minute ha ha".

I know how I interprted your words and I think more GN's than I came to the same conclusion.

As for being accused of playing the man not the ball that sadly is a case of being quite evidentevident at times for those more astute GN 's. to easily pick up on and it happens.

Ana Sat 02-May-15 22:35:44

The impression he was creating as you (and others) present it, trisher, was not the same one that was held by every member who read his posts on this thread.

Why should the majority of Gransetters (as it seems to be now) be dictated to by the few who see the bad in all men and none of the good? I do get fed up with the patronising 'if you'd seen the damage done...' etc,. etc. by former social workers/probation officers et al who only seem to post to put their oar in and criticise the rest of us.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 02-May-15 22:39:15

Oh for God's sake! He's flounced before and he's come back. What's all the fuss about? Gransnet will go on with or without any one particular poser! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 02-May-15 22:39:33

poster!!!

GrannyTwice Sat 02-May-15 22:41:25

No jings - right first time!

Ana Sat 02-May-15 22:42:09

It's not just about him, jingl, it's about what's 'allowed' and 'not allowed' to be said on GN.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 02-May-15 22:50:23

Over-reaction.

rosequartz Sat 02-May-15 22:56:49

We have a forum called pedants' corner, now we could start one on semantics, reading some of the above posts.

And the other thought that occurred to me was that perhaps we should start taking a critical look at popular music of the last - well how long? 100 years? - as some of it is about men looking at women and vice versa, and commenting on it in song.

GrannyTwice Sat 02-May-15 23:01:36

Just when you think the level of debate can't sink any further......

Ana Sat 02-May-15 23:07:19

It's not about 'debating' any more GrannyTwice.
