Is wolf-whistling a sex crime?

The DT is reporting that police are investigating after a young woman complained after "lecherous" builders whistled at her. At risk of being shot down, when I was young and in my prime I would have complained if they didn't whistle at me.

Oh grow up Elegan - that was a pathetic post!

GrannyTwice Fri 01-May-15 22:56:33

None of us know pompa other than through his posts - his NS joke and his response to criticisms of it was enough for me to be pleased if he has really left. And what exactly is wrong with a bit of bad tempered verbal responses ? Beats sexist rubbish anytime and I ask again WTF should any of us have to read his descriptions of 'normal men enjoying the scenery walking past'? Surely there are specialist forums for men ( and women) who enjoy writing about or reading that sort of sleaze ?

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 22:51:45

My comment was to soontobe , but now I am here, I don't agree that we (I certainly don't) resent the presence of a male poster, just, in this case, the post.

Just one last thought, why do wolf-whistlers assume women will be flattered by their attention or approbation? I would only be flattered if I valued the opinion or the taste of the other person and lads on a building site would be as unlikely to cut it for me as they would be to wolf-whistle at me!smile

Well, he's gone. Anyone else you would like to see the back of, G2? Me, for instance? Just say the word.

Elegran Fri 01-May-15 22:47:01

Don't be so b****y po-faced, Grannytwice

Pompa is a warm-hearted bloke with a sense of humour. He has never replied bad-temperedly verbally on Gransnet as several female posters not a mile from that here I can name have. He is not a sexist pig, he is happily married to Mrs P and I am sure he behaves like a perfect gentleman. You need to learn to distinguish between a description of a normal masculine man enjoying the scenery walking past and a predatory macho male ogling and strutting.

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 22:46:12

Speak for yourself, I did!

Ana Fri 01-May-15 22:40:16

I agree with Elegran too, about pompa. The only thing I found odd about his post was that Mrs P only joined him 'several hours later'...

Why is it that some GN members seem to resent the very presence of a male poster, even one as innocuous as pompa?

I think that some women always dress to look attractive to men or other women whatever their age, and others don't.

A neighbour of mine, in her late 70s, always gets in a tizz if she's caught without her hair and makeup in place if she has a male visitor - she doesn't bother if she knows it's going to be a woman!

soontobe Fri 01-May-15 22:35:53

I agree Elegran.

Elegran Fri 01-May-15 22:32:04

There is a world of difference between Pompa's tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a man watching the world go by and admiring the female half of it, and some lout blocking a girl's path and frightening her. OF COURSE men like to see a pretty girl just as OF COURSE women like to see a handsome man. Aren't the threads full of jokes about them? I have read a lot more from the respectable grans among us on the subject than from the grandads.

Pompa has always made fun of the stereotype MCP (or male chauvinist pig) by parodying their utterances. He has done it too well here so that some people think he is serious, but surely everyone knows him by now? If you have really made him leave Gransnet over this, then we will all be the losers.

soontobe Fri 01-May-15 22:30:02

I think that there are times when we do, and times when we dont.
And that cuts across all ages from puberty onwards.

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 22:15:53

This is not a response specifically to Pompa, I believe thatbags also said we dress etc with the opposite sex in mind as a basic primitive or unconscious reflex.
IMHO if anybody dresses to appear attractive, that is it, full stop. Men don't come into it!!
If I am having coffee or lunch with a friend or going to my Book Group, or going to the supermarket or out with the dog in the dark, I dress as I please and if it pleases me to make a feeble attempt to look my best, it is nothing to do with men!!

Maybe a decade or two ago. . . . wink

trisher Fri 01-May-15 22:15:13

Oh it's a joke! I thought it was just the rambling fantasies of some inadequate old geezer and they were best ignored whilst the rest of us continued our discussion. Just a minute.....Ha ha.

whenim64 Fri 01-May-15 22:10:47

pompa stay and talk it through, why not? Women don't all dress to attract men - they have the right to dress to suit themselves.

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:06:48

Also if women don't want to be admired, why do they wear clothes that ,make them attractive to the opposite sex.

Don't waste your time on a response. I have left for good. Thank goodness I don't know narrow minded people like a few of you in real life.

vampirequeen Fri 01-May-15 22:03:10

I got the joke Pompa grin. I people watch in the same way when DH is 'dithering' in B and Q except like your good lady I notice the negatives about the women but I notice the positives about the men.

GrannyTwice Fri 01-May-15 22:03:10

I hope you mean it pompa - that is leaving it to us

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:02:38

BTW I never mention young women, I prefer mature women.

whenim64 Fri 01-May-15 22:01:48

I ignored the post several times, but I think I have to say that these women passing by could be our daughters or even grandaughters and I wonder if you think about them as real people and not objects to ogle, pompa? How about that older man sitting nearby 'admiring' your young female relatives? Not pleasant and time sexist attitudes were relegated to the past.

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:01:29

FGS get a life - you win - have the forum to your selves.

GrannyTwice Fri 01-May-15 22:00:11

No it's not just you - it's what happens when sleazy sexist jokes and comments are greeted with delight and encouraged by other posters. It's pathetic - imagine this 'man' leching after your own dd or dgd as they walked by. Yuk!

pompa Fri 01-May-15 21:57:27

I was referring specifically to my wife dithering - she would be the first to agree.
You have totally misunderstood my post, it needs to be read in context with my earlier ones.

I said earlier that the first thing that attracts men (me at least) to a woman the first time, is not her mind, it's physical. Getting to appreciate their mind comes later.

If you are familiar with my sense of humour, you would have read "Mind" as physical attributes, which IMO are often enhance by a nice pair of jeans.

If you find this sexist - it is - I think women are sexy, viva la difference.

if you find all this too much, then IMO you are taking me far too seriously.

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 21:53:42

I too find the thought of a man "d'un certain age' leching young women/girls distasteful, I trust it was an attempt at an ill-judged joke?

Iam64 Fri 01-May-15 21:45:18

Is it me or is that last post by pompa really very unpleasant. Women/wives "dithering about what to buy ……ladies passing by with amazingly attractive minds ….. I noticed though that a nice pair of jeans ups their IQ level"

Sexist, patronising and unnecessary (imo), on this thread which as rose quartz said earlier, has been quite well balanced despite the disparity of views expressed.
