When Emily Thornberry posted a tweet about England flags draped on a less salubrious house outside which was parked a white van, people went into overdrive with outrage. These stripes are the 'posh' but tacky equivalent. I find that amusing. I can understand people's worries about basement digging, but making a fuss about some painted stripes is just silly and, therefore, to me, amusing. It's what people get outraged about that's amusing: stuff that doesn't really matter!

In the programme last night it wasn't just a one off in one street. It was various houses in streets in the same area. Some residents have been putting up with this for years.

One builder who was working on one house, then pointed out to another four consecutive houses, in the same street, already booked to have the same basement construction done, so, it could take years to complete all of them.

Eloethan, if everybody did it, maybe they would all fall down with the subsidence. That would be a sight.

I prefer it to a garden with rubbish in it or burger vans and old cars.

merlotgran I saw the programme last night about the double/triple basement houses. What thoroughly selfish, greedy people they must be to cause such major disruption to a whole street just so as they can have swimming pools, cinemas, wine cellars and the like in their already large houses. And there was even a house where a huge "waterfall wall" had been built. I thought the properties the programme showed were ghastly anyway - nothing like a home at all.

I really think there should be much tighter restrictions on this sort of work. As others have said, it must affect adjoining properties and if almost everybody in the street embarks on these projects, who knows what sort of environmental destabilisation this might cause.

I don't think the striped house is amusing at all. I think implying that the people in that area are being unnecessarily snooty about it because they are "posh" is a bit unfair. I - and I'm sure a lot of other people in much more modest homes - would not like to live opposite or next to a house as garish as that.

The money that's being bounced around is eye watering though. These houses are already worth millions and it's a case of not one basement but three because we must have an underground swimming pool/sauna/cinema/games room etc.

The elderly couple in the same road who were being driven to distraction just found themselves a 'bolt hole'

You have to get building regulations approval and be visited by the building inspector, at intervals.

Also enter into a party wall agreement with neighbours on either side.

I can't imagine what sort of nightmare it is to live through. x

These basements are a nightmare for neighbours I know someone who lived two doors along from a very inconsiderate household who were having one done, constant disruption and during the excavation seemingly loads of rats were flushed out to overrun the immediate area. I can't believe that such building work wouldn't have an adverse affect on the structure of a joining house. There just seems something very selfish about inflicting that level of chaos on the people who live close by.

Plus, the worry that the foundations of your own property would be at risk!

I'm pretty sure I would have a breakdown if I lived in that area with the constant disruption, inconvenience and work starting at 08.00 going on non stop throughout the day. A living hell!

What a living nightmare for the neighbours. I'm not surprised her planning permission was refused.

It certainly brighten's the Road up doesn't it ? I like all the different coloured house's abroad in the quaint villages but their colours are now where near as bright as that one featured.
It is very amusing and I don't think it will hurt her bank balance if she has to pay for it to be removed,surely the neighbours must have seen it being done in the first place.
