Words and phrases

Not all words are known by all people.

There are many phrases and words that are not in widespread use even in different parts of the county I live in.
So I am rather surprised that a lot of people think that everything will be understood by everyone on here.

I dont even think there is merely a north/south divide on this.
And perhaps a thought could be bourne in mind for those that do not have english as a first language.

Now I have got that off my chest!
I really dont care if all sorts of strange words and phrases, local or otherwise are discussed.

Why should it? Links are there to provide additional information or background reading to an issue to preclude the necessity of quoting screeds verbatim.
What links did you have in mind to back up your assertions that "x % " of Gransnetters don't understand what is being written on Gransnet ?
Don't get your point.

Riverwalk Thu 09-Apr-15 08:40:16

A bit of a wind-up I think, all these questions and faux innocence/ignorance! grin

Soutra Thu 09-Apr-15 08:47:01

Tedious though . . . . .

Ariadne Thu 09-Apr-15 09:22:38

Tedious is the right word, Soutra!

Soutra Thu 09-Apr-15 09:27:37

"Tedious" adj too long, slow or dull ; tiresome or monotonous.
Shall I list some synonyms?grin

GillT57 Thu 09-Apr-15 09:29:00

Very tedious. If I do not understand the point that someone has made, or how their opinion was formed, I ask. If GN was all Sun speak and words of one syllable, I wouldn't be on it. I dislike your inverted snobbery Soon. I am not a teacher, or a SW or even a professional whatever, but I read and I listen and it is this 'not for the likes of me' attitude that holds people back. Get over yourself.

Marmight Thu 09-Apr-15 09:35:55

I don't think it's the words and phrases but the content matter in some of the posts which I have trouble with ( with which I have trouble!). If I don't understand or more likely, am not interested, then I avoid those threads. Simples wink. If I am interested, then I research the subject, and then decide whether to put I my 2-penny worth.

Elegran Thu 09-Apr-15 09:41:09

There are thousands of members on Gransnet, having dozens of different conversations simultaneously. Each subject has its own words. Explaining every term used in every post gets tedious for the poster and boring for the readers.

I am currently doing some patchwork which involves creating log cabin blocks which will have sashing, all set on point with setting triangles and a pieced border with mitred corners. I will of course need batting. I have enough in my stash not to have needed to buy fat quarters. I shan't be doing any applique or reverse trapunto on this, or using fusibles, but may do some quilting in the ditch. All sewing requires attention to grain and nap, that goes without saying, and there will be lots of basting involved.

Those who do patchwork will now have a mental picture of me working away at this and know exactly what I am doing. Those who found my account interesting will find out what the **** I am talking about by asking or searching. Those who can't be ***** will move on to somewhere else.

Those who can't sew a stitch and want to learn will go to a class to learn how to. They won't expect me to give them a master-class for every word I use. That just slows down conversation.

If you genuinely do not understand the concepts that are being discussed, soontobe then your best course is to find an evening class in the subject that puzzles you. If you do understand (I remember commenting in a previous thread that your confidence and knowledge seemed to have increased vastly since you joined, to which you replied that you were never as naive and ignorant as you were assumed to be, but went along with it) then stop flannelling.

Having read my way through this thread my brain is hurting ,

AshTree Thu 09-Apr-15 09:50:17

Perfectly illustrated Elegran (as it happens, I understood all the patchwork and quilting terminology, because I too have this as a sometime hobby smile).
I think the OP is intimidated by what she perceives to be the high intellect of many gnetters.
I didn't go to university, I wasn't a teacher or a 'professional'. I haven't led an extraordinary life, or rubbed shoulders with the elite. Like thousands of others, I have lived an average life on an average income. That doesn't stop me reading, researching, learning. And it certainly doesn't make me feel unable to join in certain conversations or topics on here!

Riverwalk Thu 09-Apr-15 09:52:53

Elegran I couldn't resist looking-up reverse trapunto - now for fusibles grin

You arty/crafty folk are so elitist.

whenim64 Thu 09-Apr-15 10:01:40

Not a quilter but I get the gist of your example, Elegran and I wouldn't presume to berate you for using terms I don't quite understand. I would use the same pointy finger I'm using to type and Google what I want to know more about, or carry on reading to learn more.

Enough now, STB. You were rumbled a while ago and your persistence in maintaining this intermittent claim of not understanding is tiresome. Let's see you, the genuine person, so we can get to know you for who you are.

durhamjen Thu 09-Apr-15 10:34:09

I think you need to do what my autistic grandson does, soon.
We have a dictionary for him which is an address book. Every time he comes across a word he does not understand, we write it down under the correct letter, then look up the meaning. We then practise using the word in different sentences.
His parents are most impressed by the walking dictionary he has become. One new word a day is a lot of words a year.
He does occasionally get them wro0ng as he has difficulty knowing when to use a word adverbially or adjectivally sometimes, but he has lots of people willing to help him.

pompa Thu 09-Apr-15 11:37:07

Pompa pandiculates

Agus Thu 09-Apr-15 11:41:21

STB if you are having a problem understanding certain words and phrases that is in fact 'your' problem and up to you whether you rectify the matter or not but please stop projecting your 'inabilities' on to other Gransnetters as in they are the ones at fault by writing intelligent, informative articulate posts.

Furthermore, I find your assumption that you speak for others very arrogant.
I am more than capable in speaking for myself. The reason I do not join in on some threads may well be that they do not interest me or I do not know enough about the subject. NOT because I don't understand them.

May I suggest, as you have admitted you have no inclination to inform yourself of new words or phrases that you take a leaf out of my book and join threads which, in your case, are more on your level.

soontobe Thu 09-Apr-15 11:45:55

When I started the thread, I very much thought that others thought the same too.
But if they think the same, they are not speaking up. So I may well have been wrong on that.

I am going to have to not speak on some threads unfortunately, as I have no wish to spend lots of time looking things up. As you say, my problem.

janeainsworth Thu 09-Apr-15 12:08:28

Oh good <wipes brow>

Soutra Thu 09-Apr-15 12:41:35

I think they have spoken up, especially on this thread. I have counted at least 12 on this page alone saying the equivalent of " Not in my name!"

Juliette Thu 09-Apr-15 12:58:58

I now know what pandiculate means, not a word that has ever tripped from
my lips.
Everyday's a school day.

I want to pick up on a point that Elegran made, that I didnt properly notice before.
Yes, my confidence has increased. I think that if you join a new group of people, it is not wise to just launch straight in.
But my knowledge has not increased since 6 months ago. Well, only but a little bit as I have aged 6 months. And I said that I always had opinions.

durhamjen Thu 09-Apr-15 18:29:28

Thank you for that word, Pompa. I'll tell my grandson and he can use it every time he does so.
Unfortunately it's only physical, not mental.

pompa Thu 09-Apr-15 18:50:40

You are very welcome to that word, I very much doubt I will be using it again.

Agus Thu 09-Apr-15 18:51:20

I had to google that one Pompa

I will be sharing it with GDs who too both love learning new words and the bigger the better as we can sometimes search for anagrams.

Ana Thu 09-Apr-15 18:54:05

Six months? It is that long...?

pompa Thu 09-Apr-15 18:57:33

How about a thread similar to "Increase your Word Power" that was in Readers Digest ?
