Four Fours

I thought I'd try you with a puzzle that our maths teacher Mr Garlick set us forty odd years ago, and see if it captures your interest or falls flat.

The idea is to write a formula for every integer between one and a hundred in terms of four fours. You can use as many mathematical symbols as you like, but the only numeral allowed is four, and you must use four of them, no more, no less. (As there's no correct character on the keyboard, use .4' for point four recurring.)

I'll start off with a few so you see the idea:

1= 44/44
2= 4/4+4/4
3= 4/4+4/sqrt(4)
4= 4/sqrt(4)+4/sqrt(4)

Let's do them in order, so that people don't cherry-pick all the easy ones first:

5= ???

16 ??? we haven't got that far yet.

and 4x4 = 16 does not use four fours.

I couldn't read all the OP , my head started hurting and my eyes crossing

I could recite the whole 4x table though! grin

LOL, my brain has not worked this hard for ages, I love number problems.

rosequartz Thu 12-Mar-15 20:39:25

I'm with phoenix wink

grumppa Thu 12-Mar-15 20:45:42

16=4+4+4+4.

pompa Thu 12-Mar-15 20:48:17

Grumpa, hold your horses, we still need 13, 14 and 15

Charleygirl Thu 12-Mar-15 20:52:32

I have lost the will to live reading through all of those posts. I am afraid that I can only manage up to the 12 x table and zilch else. Like phoenix I prefer words.

I was better at languages and English at school rather than physics, chemistry and maths- which was 100 years ago.

13 =(4*4)-4+3

Alygran Thu 12-Mar-15 21:08:54

No it doesn't. Don't!

JoyBloggs Thu 12-Mar-15 21:10:38

Sorry, still don't fully understand the rules about 'squaring', 'powers' etc blush! I think this will probably not be allowed but hey ho worth a try!

13 = (4squared - 4) + 4/4

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 21:12:10

15 = 4x4 - 4/4

14 = 4/.4 + sqrt 4 + sqrt 4

JoyBloggs Thu 12-Mar-15 21:16:40

16 = (4/.4) + (4 + sqrt4)

Alygran Thu 12-Mar-15 21:20:05

Try again
17= (4x4) + (4/4)

pompa Thu 12-Mar-15 21:36:51

4 squared is not acceptable as it would be written with a superscript 2 - see earlier posts

13 = (44/4) + sqrt4

pompa Thu 12-Mar-15 21:39:00

18 = 4! - 4 -sqrt4

Alygran Thu 12-Mar-15 21:47:14

19=4!-4+(4/4)
20=4x4+sqrt(4x4)

JoyBloggs Thu 12-Mar-15 21:49:16

OK, thanks! Read all earlier posts but seemed conflicting... hence my hesitation with my formula for '13'!

JoyBloggs Thu 12-Mar-15 21:55:24

21 = (4! - 4) + 4/4

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 21:56:46

Alygran. I think that your 19 = 21?
I think you mean 4! - 4 - 4/4

crun Thu 12-Mar-15 23:50:36

You're beginning to get the hang of it now.

22= 4!-(4+4)/4

rosequartz I see what you mean now, I thought you meant you had looked at the post above and come up with 16 instead of 10. grin

"LOL, my brain has not worked this hard for ages, I love number problems."

Must be an engineer thing. Wait till you get to 89, it took me !#@*ing hours! grin

pompa Fri 13-Mar-15 07:32:49

23 = 4! - √4 + 4/4

Alygran Fri 13-Mar-15 07:57:37

Thanks soontobe I typed it in wrong! Hopefully a bit better this morning. I think this one is ok...
24= (4x4)+4+4

soontobe Fri 13-Mar-15 12:44:37

26 = 4! + sqrt4 - sqrt4 + sqrt4

I cant do 25.

pompa Fri 13-Mar-15 13:02:32

25 = 4! - (4/4) + sqrt4
