I recognise the scenario you describe Grannyknot. As a mother of sons I make do with a visit if I'm lucky! It's on Saturday for one DS this year!

Usually get flowers and wouldn't want anything else.

I like the original tradition of those in service going home for the day and taking some flowers from the hedgerow.

Of course the DILs and DSs are spending the days with the other granny.

They all come here and I have to cook a huge dinner. hmm How does that work? confused

Actually, I think I will tell them to get here early this year and they can cook it. And they can supply the cake. (Although I will have to make the usual choc cake for the boys, but I don't mind that, but I like a proper Mother's Day cake with pretty icing)

We make it a day like any other, unlike when my mother was alive when it was a royal command to be present. My DD will ring from 300 miles away and S may or may not call but after all these years it matters not a jot.

I have several children, none living locally.
I dont like fuss either, but do want a bit of something. So a different child is nominated each year, to be the one to send me something small, eg some flowers and a card.
The rest can ring me up if they want to or send me an email. That is it.
We are all happy with this arrangement.

It's a funny old world, just when you think you can finally relax in your groove for all time, another curve ball comes your way.

I don't give a hoot about Mother's Day - to me every day is "family day"! My son's mother-in-law has only daughters and a huge fuss is made of Mother's Day, with expensive gifts. So the pressure is building and his wife is a "first time mother" this year too, I am suddenly feeling the pressure when I see "To Daughter-in-Law on Mother's Day" cards, and both my children think they have neglected me for 30 odd years! Sometimes I think the best Mother's Day gift would be a day when I am left completely in peace! confused smile

How does Mother's Day work in your family?
