Changing from swimsuit, practically in the nip, a figure appeared in doorway. Short hair - bomber and cargoes. Men next door I say. I'm a girl came the answer. Don't you just want to beam up!

Don't worry Coolgran65. I've started checking my bag, person etc., these days to make sure I haven't got something on me that I shouldn't have.

I always feel nervous going through the main doors of supermarkets in case I've accidentally put something in my handbag instead of the basket.

In shoe shops I even check to make sure I've not somehow put the new shoes on before I leave.

It's not necessarily an age thing. When I was in my early thirties I left my dog tied up outside Boots. The shop rang and asked me to come and fetch her. They were very narky about it. I put it down to stress.

Riverwalk and Lona .... I agree, will ring the charity shop and tell them I'll leave a donation in my local branch.
There could so easily have been a hand on my shoulder... the incident rather alarmed me.

Thick and Wet? grin

merlotgran Wed 11-Feb-15 22:30:59

Mark Phillips?

jo1book Wed 11-Feb-15 22:28:14

Fog? Give me a clue

Anne58 Wed 11-Feb-15 21:05:08

PS He was taller than "Fog" as that person was referred to in those circles!

Anne58 Wed 11-Feb-15 21:03:42

He sort of flirted with me at a do at Windsor Castle once, but I've told the story before.

I wouldn't say that he is very short, but then I'm only 5'2

When I was working, our office had an official visit from Prince Charles one afternoon. The route that the Prince would take was mapped out and every member of staff was given a copy of the map complete with the timings when the Prince would be in each area, so that those who were not members of the "meet-and-greet" party would stay out of his way.

His visit was due to finish at 4pm, so when I left my desk at 4:45 I knew that he would be long gone - and so I felt quite at ease taking a short-cut down one of the "out of bounds" corridors.

But of course he was running late. I turned a corner in the corridor and collided bodily with the Heir to the Throne who was coming the other way. His entourage, and most of our senior managers who were following him were horrified, but the Prince himself was unflustered. He just gave that half-laugh that he has become famous for and said that we should both look where we were going in future. (Oh by the way - he's very short).

JaneR you would fit in perfectly at our WI grin

I'm sure most of us have experienced the skirt tucked into the knickers sketch.

I was walking down a road aged about thirty something when a car horn began to sound. I thought it was some bloke who thought I looked all right.

He pointed and gestured and I realised what had happened. blush

gillybob Wed 11-Feb-15 15:11:14

Priceless Absentgrandma I laughed out loud reading it ! grin

merlotgran Wed 11-Feb-15 14:56:11

janer, It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't our National Anthem. I closed my eyes and tried to think of something completely different but all I could picture was Prince Philip's expression. grin

Lona Wed 11-Feb-15 14:44:15

Also paid for it of course! grin

Lona Wed 11-Feb-15 14:43:18

Coolgran I would have taken the jumper home and either kept it, or returned it to the shop, after a phone call to let them know what had happened.
You didn't steal it (no intention to permanently deprive the owner), it was an honest mistake.

Riverwalk Wed 11-Feb-15 14:36:16

coolgran I think you should phone the charity shop and explain what happened.

Most charity shops are now quite hi-tech and barcode the merchandise so that donors are informed of how much money their 'junk' has made.

Someone else might get the blame for pilfering or you could be caught on CCTV.

janerowena Wed 11-Feb-15 14:16:11

merlot! I just listened to that piece. It's DIRE. I think the organist chose it because it's probably fun to play. It's more like fairground music! The poor Queen!

jo1book Wed 11-Feb-15 12:37:44

We should start a thread "My best Klepto Moment"!

Yesterday I was shopping with my friend in a nearby larger town.... sort of on the look out for a new smartish jacket.
We popped into a nearby Chartiy Shop and I discovered a lovely green Boden sweater at only £2 and hung the jumper and coathanger over my arm with my large tote bag, while I thought about it.

About a half hour later we were a couple of streets away in the very nice store that we had been aiming for, great 70% sale.
I picked up a few lovely jackets to try on, from Eastex, Phase 8 etc. fabulous bargains... jacket was £149 reduced to £29.
As I walked over to the changing room I wondered.... what's that..... it was the Boden jumper and coathanger still on my arm.... yikes....
I could feel the blood draining.....
Quick as a flash I hung it on a nearby rail.

I know I should have taken it back to the Charity Shop... was totally out of time to make it to the bus ... and reminded myself that I support the Charity in question.
I can only imagine the confusion when staff are tidying at the end of the day and find this strange item.

The thing is .... I think that means I 'accidentally' stole the jumper !!

What would anyone else have done.. blush

I went on holiday in the 70s with a very vain and hygene obsessed friend. She had a lovely figure and when she unpacked she had 5 different coloured bikinis all with matching sandals, hair band, bangle, earrings and necklace.

On the first day wearing an orange ensemble she left the pool to use the loo. As usual all eyes followed her progress.

Even more so coming back, tripping along in her heeled sandals she was trailing behind her a long stream of toilet paper. This had also been packed to line the toilet seat, before she sat down and had stuck to the sun lotion she had slathered on.

Not quite to the point but when I saw the heading I was reminded of my dear friend Angus. We went to his funeral and on the back of the service sheet in teeny writing at the bottom of the page were the words'' Beam me up Scottie''. (Angus was a great fan of Star Trek!)

janerowena Tue 10-Feb-15 22:32:48

So you really should've gone to specsavers! grin

A lovely thread but I have to admit I am trying to forget a few of my mishaps!

A couple of years ago whilst in the UK on holiday OH decides to take the opportunity to have his eyes tested (in a language he actually understands!) DD1 phones Vision Express, makes appointment, DD2 takes us into town on the appropriate day. It's pouring with rain so we run (with small DGS in his buggy). I have never been in the shopping mall we are heading for, but DD1 says that's where VE is located. I see the opticians sign and belt in followed by OH,DD2 and DGS.

'We've an appointment for 11.30' I say.'

We take a seat as instructed, and presently the optician comes into reception, looks at OH and says, ' Mr X?' OH is deaf so nods and follows her into the examination room. DD2 and I look at each other...we are not the Xs... we are the Ys. A few minutes later the real Mr X turns up. We look at each other again.....and then the penny drops. 'You twit, Mum, we're in Specsavers' DD2 hisses. Embarrassment turns to hysteria, both of us are almost at the point of shoving handkerchiefs in our mouths. OH emerges, oblivious to the mistake, so I decide to bluff it out.

The optician addresses him as Mr X... the real Mr X looks suprised, so I have to chip in and say OH is Mr Y. The receptionist can't find him in the appointments book . The staff are puzzled, but I insist we rang and made an appointment. They conclude we were booked at their other shop, in the same town but another shopping mall. I agree this is what must have happened and blame DD1 for not checking. BY this time I am almost wetting myself, so leave OH choosing his glasses and head for the nearest 'ladies'. DD2 is not amused, she later said it was like taking 3 children to the opticians, the one who behaved the best was DGS. Grandma behaved very badly, and told fibs.

When I was much younger, my DH and I were invited to his new boss's house for dinner. I was a shy, nervous little creature at the best of times and meeting the boss and his wife filled me with dread. When we arrived they sat us down and gave us a drink. I started wittering on about rubbish in my nervous state. The subject turned to food (I knew very little about cooking at the time) and I said 'we know someone who is so mean, she cooks sprout tops and serves them up for dinner.' When we sat down to eat I didn't recognise one of the vegetables on my plate and asked what they were to which the boss's wife replied 'sprout tops'. blush

why are wigs so funny? I went to a funeral where one of the speakers had a ginger toupee perched on top of his white fringe of hair. I felt ill, trying not to laugh.

Tegan Tue 10-Feb-15 18:17:54

That happened to me when I was in Prague listening to some chamber music in a room with just a handful of people. I looked across at my friend and we just lost it completely..both of us sat there shaking for the duration [but thankfully kept a lid on the laughter].
