Just spent a month with friends in USA. If they are stopped by the police and they don't have a bag to collect rubbish in their car they are fined on the spot. They always carry a plastic carrier bag and all litter etc. is put in it straight away.....seemed like an excellent idea to me.

I'm surprised to realise that my Accord is actually reasonably tidy - it's about the only thing of mine that is - and it's only because I don't use it much, I suspect.

Lynker where do you put a plastic bag in a small car. Ive tried it but if you put it on the seat, someone sits on it or the rubbish falls out, if you put it on the floor, it gets squashed, I have a hanger thingy on the back of my driver seat but I would twist my guts to turn round to use it as a rubbish bag. I tried hanging it on geat lever but its so low that everything fell out.

You worry too much ethel. Just chuck it on the floor.

Ethel, they hung it inbetween the front 2 seats and it seemed to work well!

I have tidied mine up a bit by buying a multi pocket which is on the back of the drivers seat. (I think it is meant for a pushchair. I got it from Oxfam.). In it I keep shopping bags, gloves, umbrella and a small blanket. In the door pocket are sunglasses, tissues, a duster (not used much) and a sock to put over the gear knob to remind me if I leave it in gear on hills. I wash the outside every couple of months but hate doing the inside and the carpets are a mess.

I hang a little used gift bag over the gear stick! Except at the moment it is lying on the floor of the backseat.

Im not going to bother cleaning, just let the maggots feed well.

I always have a plastic carrier bag in Betty for rubbish. It hangs from the glove compartment. It's easier to drop the rubbish into it rather than have to pick stuff off the floor later.

Duster over the steering wheel is my reminder, although I can't always remember what it is there to remind me of! Sometimes I attach a post-it note to the blob of Blutac which lives on the dashboard.
My car is usually clean on the outside, although I am fed up with removing salt at the moment. The inside rarely receives attention because it is full of necessary stuff, none of which I can do without, 'just in case'.

I'm surprised by the US law about rubbish in your car.
Surely as long as it's not around the driver causing an obstruction to safe driving, it's none of they're business if the rear foot well is 6" deep in crap !

I have to contend with some steep hills Merlot and sometimes leave the car in gear. ( many years ago there was a handbrake related incident). The sock reminds me that it is in gear. The sock is the remaining half of a pair, its mate having been binned with a hole.

Nina, I think it is more to do with demonstrating that you have a means of collecting litter etc in your car and don't hurl it out of the windows.

Our car is quite tidy. It is used mostly for work, so has to carry around some of our cleaning materials. The only other thing it contains is a frost cover for the windscreen. My Ds's car is absolutely pristine. Never any rubbish or dust!!! If we borrow it for any reason, and leave anything in it, we are told off!!! His bedroom on the other hand...

In Dubai you get fined on the spot for a dirty car....I'd be broke if I lived there! However as the weather there is so different I guess cars don't get that dirty, just dusty - supermarket car parks have people waiting to clean your car while you shop too.
The lanes around here are so muddy I don't wash mine as often as I probably should as one trip and it's filthy again.
Inside isn't too bad, I'm the only one driving it so can't blame anyone else, unfortunately!

Next to impossible to keep the car and my van clean right now.
It's mud central on the roads around here.
Mrs Retiredguy's car is super tidy inside, that said she bought it new just before Christmas.
She is quite tidy though, her cars have always been presentable inside.
My old van isn't too bad in the cab but the van part is a mess.
Luckily there's a bulkhead totally separating front from back so the cabin stays tidy-ish.

My car is a tip. If a friend asks for a lift I panic. Nothing to do with me - DBH uses it frequently as it uses less petrol than his when he goes to athletics meets, and it is full of plastic drink bottles, crumbs because he has tea in the car on the way there, old towels, plastic bags for wet trainers (for some reason the trainers are brought in but not the bags) and various other objects.

Because he is rarely at home, he only cleans it out three or four times a year and I don't see why I should have to clear up his mess. Occasionally I get livid and throw it all over into the boot and make sure stray trainers are filled with his crumbs, but on the whole I think - Life is too short.

I gave in yesterday and took my car to the valeting place in our town Just to get it washed on the outside. There was big queue but the guy said he was short staffed. A fiver well spent.

I am ashamed to give lifts in my car, with 2 dogs and daily visits to the stables, it is disgusting and stinks of dogs and horses.Mud ,hay and shavings,coffee cups and sandwich wrappers,leads and headcollars,scarves, hats and gloves,magazines and receipts,socks and boots......that's what I can remember but I bet theres more in there....Methinks it's time for a clean up.

I wonder why you get fined in Dubai for having a dirty car?

My car is pristine, every time I get in the chauffeur driven transport I use, it is perfect. I think they call them taxis.
