It's an Americanism that's been around these shores for years, along with the likes of 'sleepover' and 'bling'.

I'm reminded of a former colleague who claimed not to know who David Beckham was.

I have heard it used for suburb, but I can't think of anyone I know who would have used a word such as burbs. If you say "load of old burbs," people like me will think you are talking about a suburb and will be very confused grin

pogs, I like it! I shall have to find ways of inserting the phrase "load of burbs" into my conversations now grin

I cheated blush. I had not heard the word burb used for suburb so you are not alone.

I was going to say 'burb' was a term I had heard but to me in the context of 'What a load of burb he was talking'. In other words what a load of prattle he was talking.

I will contact WIKI and update them smile

Down here on the edge of London when I meet up with a friend in town we sometimes say "goodbye back to the burbs"

Yes, it was funny! (vintage 1989...grin)

There is a movie called the Burbs. Very, very funny and well worth watching.

Oh shucks! I'm so behind the times! grin

I would say the same as Ana.. where I live is the 'burbs'.

Ana Fri 02-Jan-15 21:21:58

I haven't googled, but I thought it was a well-established contraction of 'suburb'. No doubt something else entirely these days, though...

burb(s), a noun

Guesses as to its meaning? Without googling! I came across it in something I was reading so I know already.

Thought some grans would enjoy the guessing smile
