Edwina Currie - is she 'too old' to be talking about sex?

I'm not a big fan of hers or anything, but why can't she say she finds men attractive? she's in her 60's not her 90's.

Lona Sat 06-Dec-14 11:24:16

grin Me too POGS.
It was actually Jake's idea to give her an all over body massage, but we didn't see it happen, thank goodness!

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 11:46:13

POGS - I agree. But even light hearted drivel can start debates. I think that's what Edwina is doing (as she always does in her own idiosyncratic, brash way). What is interesting is that she is getting quite a lot of public support.

PS, I haven't admitted it until now, as a relative newcomer to GN, but I am older than Edwina.

FarNorth Sat 06-Dec-14 12:38:58

POGS you said I thought feminism was all about what men can do, we can do better. We are equal if not even better.

Yes, we can do anything better than men but we don't have to do everything they do.
I agree with rosequartz that similar behaviour from a man of her age would be seen as sleazy, and so should hers be.
If people enjoy light-hearted, sleazy drivel then of course that's up to them

POGS Sat 06-Dec-14 14:01:58

Far North

You have addressed me in person and I haven't a clue what your talking about in your first sentence. confused

As for your second sentence I won't respond I think it is obvious what your implication is.

Come to think of it yes I will.

I said it's light hearted drivel with a grin.

You decided to add the word 'sleazy' and I find that ridiculous having watched the program.

Ana Sat 06-Dec-14 14:17:32

A case of mistaken identity I think, POGS! confused

rosequartz Sat 06-Dec-14 14:43:06

POGS I think it was me who said 'sleazy' in the first instance, FarNorth was just repeating what I said, don't get cross with her. grin

I don't think I am a prude, but I do think that double standards sometimes apply - if a man in his 60s was flirting with either of my DDs (who are most certainly not prudes! then I think they would refer to him as a 'sleaze-ball', so it is probably a term that I picked up from them.

Perhaps some people think it is absolutely right that older women should be able to behave as many men have behaved for years, but not everyone would find it so.

Yes, it is drivel TV, can be boring, can be hilarious. But at least Edwina is not boring!

I quite like I'm A Celebrity. [I am long over the bushtucker trials part though].
I like to see how people behave and interact.

I think that Edwina is bordering on being sleazy.

To put another angle to it[or perhaps not], what do FarNorth and others think about eg Mel saying "phwoar" about Jake quite a lot.
[She isnt married I dont think, and is about 20 years older than him?]

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 16:10:01

As I said before, Edwina did not say "phoooar", she just said how good his body was. And how beautiful all young bodies are. Nothing sleazy about that.

Personally, altho I agree with her about Jake's body, I find that his tattoos detract from his lovely rippling and toned physique, and make him a complete turn off. tchsad >

soontobe Sat 06-Dec-14 16:13:32

But Edwina has been saying a lot of things, and looking, and may be even touching if I remember correctly?
She is going a bit far for my taste.

annodomini Sat 06-Dec-14 16:34:27

If I did feel inclined to exclaim 'phoar!' a younger man, what would put me right off would be the embarrassment of my GC. I wonder what Edwina's GC think about her behaviour in the jungle. I believe she does have some.

FarNorth Sat 06-Dec-14 16:44:52

I confess I haven't seen the programme but have seen reports in the papers. Mel seems to be a bit sleazy also as far as I can tell.

Pogs I'm not at all surprised if you disagree with my views but I am surprised that you claim not to understand them at all.

Ana Sat 06-Dec-14 17:03:23

FarNorth, it wasn't POGS who said I thought feminism was all about what men can do, we can do better. We are equal if not even better.

That's what she didn't understand about your post of 12.38.

I don't think any of them is being 'sleazy'. Edwina and Mel are openly admiring of Jake's physique, that's all. There's been no 'nudge-nudge, wink-wink, what wouldn't I like to do to him' going on that I've heard! confused

soontobe Sat 06-Dec-14 17:11:00

I think that there has been quite a lot Ana. But am now starting to doubt my own memory! tchsmile

Ana Sat 06-Dec-14 17:15:16

sleaze -^immoral, sordid, and corrupt behaviour or activities^

I don't think that's what's been happening, but that's just a personal take. Perhaps others have a lower sleaze threshold! tchgrin

Nonu Sat 06-Dec-14 17:17:06

Ana, Ana, you have to put Far out of her misery, else she won"t sleep tonight, I know for sure I won"t, until this conundrum is resolved.
tchwink

POGS Sat 06-Dec-14 17:25:27

FarNorth

It wasn't me!!!!!!

I fully understand what you mean and I don't think the tone of 'both' of your posts directed to me have been lost anybody either.

I have to say I don't know where all this has come from.

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 17:33:56

annodomini - Edwina's GC - don't know if she has any but I believe she has two daughters.

When she first came into public view for her lifestyle, I felt that it might be tough on her two daughters, and this has been my one reservation about Edwina living her private life in public. How have her daughters dealt with this?

One of her daughters has been shown on this programme, supporting her mum, don't know about the other one.

If she has any GC - well, honestly, in this day and age they will be dealing with loads of stuff that we never had to deal with openly (altho in private it was rife, for many of us, I am quite sure of that) porn texting etc.

Hopefully their parents, teachers and others will be able to guide them and protect them. Edwina might be involved in this, but might not, for her own reasons.

Surely her daughters are able to say to any children involved - "Hey, my mum is intelligent, sharp, strong, successful and worth listening to, but maybe a bit over the top at times".

Note, Edwina, as an ex-politician, picks her words very carefully, altho as an ex-politician she doesn't have to be politically correct all the time - bliss!

I hope she agrees with the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph voted most popular post-war poem BBC poll 1996 (you can Google it) :

"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
- - - And I shall spend my pension on brandy - - -
- - - But now we must - - - set a good example for the children - -
But maybe I ought to practice a little now? - - - " sunshine sunshine sunshine

Ana Sat 06-Dec-14 17:37:50

Nonu, I think that should be up to you! tchwink

Nonu Sat 06-Dec-14 17:52:17

You know what, you are a little sausage ANA
{tchgrin]

soontobe Sat 06-Dec-14 17:54:25

True, I dont think Edwina's behaviour would come under the heading of sleaze, going by what you have written.

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 18:08:41

I'll be watching out tonight for any "sleaze" moments, altho I may miss them as I switch over when the Tuckbush Trials are on - yuk yuk yuk vile vomit yuk - who wants that?

Also, will Edwina go? tchconfused She's down to the last four. She's only been kept in by viewers voting for her (not me on this occasion).

Ana Sat 06-Dec-14 18:10:57

Well, yes, all the remaining four have only been kept in by viewers voting for them! tchgrin

annodomini Sat 06-Dec-14 18:21:14

Her official web site says that she and her husband have six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. As two of the children are hers, it seems likely that some of the GC might be.

onmyown Sat 06-Dec-14 18:46:46

thanks, annodmini. I tried to find her official website and failed. Yes, there are grandchildren and great-grandchildren in her orbit.

I liked the statement by Julian Critchley MP (deceased 2000?) who said:
Fellow MP Julian Critchley said of her: “Edwina has a brass neck, a silver tongue and a golden pen.”

She hasn't changed. Beware the silver tongue and golden pen. (But I still admire her for her outspoken remarks.)

rosequartz Sat 06-Dec-14 20:22:49

POGS Not getting cross with you, just clearing up a misunderstanding smile

ps we usually agree on a lot of things!
