Christmas bling for the home?

I like blue lights. In fact I like blue anything. It might be with living close to the sea, I'm not sure.

My dining room/family room is decorated in the "coastal" style with stripped wood panels, putty coloured painted furniture (courtesy of M&S I'm not very crafty). Cushions, throws and accessories all in seaside colours. I also collect sea glass as a hobby which looks beautiful in a jar with as gentle light behind it. At Christmas I try to carry on the theme and whilst I have a traditional green tree the lights, baubles and decorations on it are all pale blue and white. Not everyone's taste but it works for me.

Minimalist definitely. A tree with white lights and baubles in two colours and a garland up the bannister. Hanging decorations consist of stainless steel snowflakes from the chandelier. Hate dust attracting paper tat.

We just have a tree, and a few small Christmassy ornaments. Hubby doesn`t like "trimmings", when youngest son was still here, he put them up, but there haven`t been any since he left. I hate putting the tree away, the lights brighten the room up no end, it looks so drab when the tree lights go off.

...And it was very beautiful.

Tegan - I don't like blue light either. However, I was at Graceland near Christmas time and the mansion was decorated with thousands of blue lights, as in Blue Christmas

I felt a bit depressed at the thought of taking the tree out of the loft, because it only seems like yesterday that I put it up there. Also, my tree was too big for the room, so I've treated myself to a new, slimline tree from John Lewis. I always try to buy a couple of new decorations each year but also have ones that the children made when they were little plus a few decorations that were my mums. Other than that it's just holly and ivy. I'm looking for a good home for my old tree [feel a bit disloyal ]. One thing I don't like are blue lights at Christmas; I find them very cold and un Christmas'y. Prefer red, green, gold and silver.

I do have a very old fairy glass looks quite sad but still "does the job" if you know what I mean.

now I am not too sure what this thread is about (I always have the threads set to show last post first but you cant see the OP) but gilly you have made me giggle... just off to read what this is all about!!!!!

Sadly my front bush has just been heavily pruned so it will be difficult to dress up this year.

I do have a few spikey bits around the back though, so who knows I might still achieve a festive display.

POGS I have a string of solar lights in my bush outside and they work fine at this time of the year, it's now 21.51 and they are still flashing. I think there is too much build up to Christmas but do light lights/candles at this time of the year, it helps brighten up the dark days/nights. They said on radio today that the John Lewis Christmas advert is out so it must be getting near to Christmas, it's 7 weeks away for goodness sake. We do decorate outside with a few lights. We went to USA for New Year 2 years ago, the lights outside the houses there were fantastic

Last year we hardly bothered at all as we went away for Christmas and it was all slightly odd. My husband did put some fairy lights up around a mirror we have in the hall and when it was time to take them down he decided, most uncharacteristically, to leave them. So we already have a head start this year as they're still there.
I'm neither one thing nor the other really. We always have a real tree and it's usually quite big and nicely decorated - plus a wreath on the front door and a few candles and such. This year Lidl have done some pretty felt advent stocking garlands and I've bought one to put on the mantelpiece, but that's about it really.
Must confess that I spent yesterday evening wrapping presents to send overseas and whilst I was doing that I took a phone call from my father in law about his Christmas tree.......Christmas is creeping up on me.

But only because I am useless at decorating at general. And I just dont like many christmas decorations, so dont buy many new ones.
Oh, and the house does not lend itself to that many handy places to put them.

Oh.... And I display family and close friend's cards and put the rest on a nice dish on the hearth.

All go do with available space.

I put up lots of garlands and wreaths on doors, indoors and outside, mantles etc. We don't have a lot of space and so I put lots of twinkly lights on my very tall grape ivy indoor plants instead of a tree.

I really enjoy Xmas lights. I like lights at anytime to be honest, they are cheery and I would have them on in one form or another all year if it didn't cost money.

I think it's great for kids (of all ages) to see them and whilst I appreciate it does add to the argument that Xmas has become commercialised it doesn't stop me enjoying them.

It's quite difficult to buy good 'outside' lighting that run off the electricity supply I find. I think solar powered lights are rubbish for obvious reasons at this time of the year but they seem to be everywhere.
