soop You are not alone! I've always been a good speller, but now I've lost confidence in my ability and keep a dictionary next to me just to check.
Doesn't help that half the time I can't even remember the words in the first place!

I'm the same! I have to think whether I live opposite whales or Wales! (Not much difference really, dropped 'H's are rather common though I suppose)

I downloaded Wordweb and I find it invaluable. It is just the odd word that looks strange when I type it so it takes me a couple of seconds to check.

Perfect example, I have used the French spelling of grammar

Hello again. I'm back with my special mug of afternoon tea and, as it's Saturday, I allow myself a buttery shortbread. Tee hee!

We were about to take our daily exercise earlier today but refrained when it rained. The sea is gunmetal grey, as is the sky, and the islands are nowhere to be seen.

Yesterday, we called in to have yet another chat with the long suffering vet. I swear that the moment we enter the door, the staff give each other a "knowing look". Anyways, we never have to remind them who the animal in question is. First words are usually..."how's Rory?" MacSporran wished to know whether or not Rory may have a little tinned food added to his long standing, somewhat boring, special biscuit diet. The nice young vet went to a great deal of trouble to make a case for a little of what Rory fancies is permissible...it is the amount that needs careful monitoring. MacS was asked, is Rory friendly. When told that he [Rory] spends all night asleep on MacS's lap (MacS sleeps in a reclining chair because it is the most comfortable position for him) the vet spluttered his coffee all over his desktop. What's funny?, MacS asked...you are, was the response. That cat is supposed to be "unapproachable". Ah yes, we reply, we remember those days well. At which point MacS rolls up his trouser leg and points at a certain ugly set of scars.

Well, it is almost time to leave the computer and read the newspaper. One hour to go until I enjoy a delicious G&T. Rory is already sitting as close as he can to the cooker. Chicken is roasting. He sits ram-rod straight. He's not budging until the time is right and his dish is looking a whole lot more tempting than it does at the moment.

Tell Rory I shall be cooking roast chicken tomorrow - however, it's rather a long trek down here so it may be all gone by the time he arrives.

Galen that reminds me of the time we visited Lynton and the lady in one of the shops pointed us in the direction of the best spot along the coast to be able to see 'seals and whales'. Of course, when we got there we realised that she meant 'seals and Wales' which, of course, was somewhat disappointing as we had just come from there. We did manage to see the seals on the rocks below.

I do find that, although I contribute to posts on grammar and can become quite hot under the collar about lapses such as 'should of' that some of my posts can sound a little strange these days when I re-read them. Oh dear . I must look up Wordweb.

Ladies your spelling and grammar are impeccable! Back in the day I used to be interested in the Times Educational Supplement forums and the standard of spelling and grammar there was horrendous! Sadly it was the young teachers who were the worst and it is not their education I know. DC are all grammar fascists despite being in their early thirties.
Have just made a Mary Berry lemon cake with marscapone filling and a raspberry pavlova for DH birthday tomorrow, I'll send some through the ether before visiting DC and their OHs scoff the lot

When my parents died and I was at their house sorting everything, I received a letter from my place of work and it upset me so much because it was littered with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. That was obviously the fault of the secretary but the letter had been signed and not checked by the boss prior to posting.

I've been missing out on so much by not visiting the kitchen, but have been reading all through the thread, and can see what a healing place it can be. A place where folk can drop in and just 'be'. No criticisms or judgements, just warmth and friendly, gentle support.

I'm sorry to hear about the letter you received from work, Charleygirl. Having worked as a PA for many years I was constantly having to check the spelling and grammar of some of the people for whom I worked (trying not to end with a preposition!) - many of whom had doctorates.

The weather forecast for this area was for a bright sunny day, however it is pouring with rain. I must get on with some jobs indoors.

I hope the weather is better wherever all you lovely lot are, otherwise soop's could get very crowded indeed today.

I have made a pot of coffee to go with the

rosequartz, I have not had a lie in for this length of time for ages and Tara and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The coffee you made was super, just what I needed. I decided not to have any cake, just a banana. I am trying to stay clear of sweet foods like cake and biscuits.

rosequartz at the orthopaedic hospital where I had my knee replacement, they send letters to India to be typed. The spelling is fine and most of the grammar is acceptable but what really irritates me is that on every line my surname is used at least once. It is totally unnecessary. I still see sentences ending with a preposition- is it the way we were taught that it irrtates us so much?

It is very much colder today. The wind has a real bite to it. We fed our pals' wild birds first thing this morning. My nose was that cold and drippy with it.

Charleygirl Well done for resisting cake and sweet stuff. We opened an exceedingly large bar of rum and raisin dark chocolate last night. A treat for the watching of Montelbano. We started off with two wee chunks. A little later, as it was a Saturday, we each had a further two chunks. It will be MacSporran's 74th birthday tomorrow. MacS will treat himself to a Ylang Ylang CD and we shall have lunch at the Royal. Tomorrow evening, the rest of the choc bar will be demolished.

rosequartz Rory sends purrs. He has had sufficient chicken for the time being. I must say that he is number one in our household. He always has the first cut off the newly roasted chicken. We mere mortals stand in the queue and wait our turn.

soop Rory would love it here because I prefer dark meat so he could have the breast of chicken. The downside is that as I am on my own, I rarely buy a whole chicken. He would love the bags of chicken breast pieces that I buy in Waitrose and use for stir fries or whatever.

Happy birthday to MacS and maybe as a special birthday present he will get a date tomorrow to visit the haematology dept. to start treatment. Is he allowed a glass or three of ? Enjoy your meal out tomorrow evening.

Not too cold here soop in fact quite a bit of sunshine so I decided to hang out a washing, Sod's law, we then had a shower but, rebel that I am, I am leaving it out and the sun has reappeared.

kitty thanks, tiny tiny steps! My dd is a very brave girl, but she's had a cushioned life, and I'm worried/scared that she doesn't realise how very difficult life is going to be for her and her girls. At least it's brought her back together with her brother, which is a blessing
