Yesterday within and hour my 'Beach Hut nutty friend' rang me on her landline, she wanted to read a text out to me from her mobile. She found the text after asking me to wait a minute while she fiddled. I waited and waited then heard her calling me down the phone (her mobile) 'Hello! hello! hello! are you there, Oh I've lost her, helloooo! ' I was shouting a loud as I could as I realised that she was on the other phone which was not even connected to me. After about 2-3 minutes of this she finally realised her mistake. THEN I was on the computer and DH was obviously dialling someone on our landline (it beeps at each button) beep beep beep............beep beepbeepbeep. I said 'who on earth are you trying to call, you've dialled so many numbers' 'Oh, he replied, 'I was just trying to turn the tv over'. I despair.

It's chaos. The chairwoman wants to bring them round. I am no secretary, my friend is but she has just taken over all the newsy stuff to send to the central office that sends out the magazines. There is a secretary but in name only - deaf, half blind and mumbles but insists on trying to read out minutes nevertheless. Seriously, it's Jam and Jerusalem. Lovely woman though, in fact so is the Chair. It's just that I had really wanted to leave and not get so involved just yet, but I watch it all with a sort of horrified fascination and find myself getting sucked in.

Last month a lecturer cancelled. Chair was livid, but friend said that the lecturer was too, he said he couldn't find an email number for her to let her know, and when he tried to ring to tell her she was out and there wasn't even an answerphone! All went a bit quiet and we moved swiftly on to 'other matters'.

That is the trouble, they are all lovely women (or men) It is just that they are still at least 30 years behind everyone else.

I think you should take up the chairwoman's suggestion that you show her how it is done. Sit her down beside you, scan or type in the info sheet and fire it off to the email-holders with one click of the finger. While you are sitting at the computer, find a website for a different group and show her that, so that she can see how the rest of the wortld is living.

She will be either impressed or horrified.

I know! Horrified that she hasn't done it before, I hope. I'm more worried about how patient I shall be actually... If I could manage a class of 30 four year olds, I should manage a woman in her 60s, it's just that my expectations may be somewhat higher.

Stock up with gold stars, and prepare the naughty step.

Today I tried to blow an icon that had popped up onto my mobile screen away. Just to let you all know that I am almost as batty, not quite, as my friend.

Ah! and yesterday, while reading a text on my mobile I was asked by DH to unplug the lawn mower from the lounge. I strode across the room, put my foot in a toddler's wooden trolly, my leg shot out from under me, the other one went sideways and I landed in slow-motion on my back onto a pile of lego. DH, bless him, stood by the patio door saying 'Are you OK?' OF COURSE I'M BLOODY WELL NOT, UNPLUG IT YOURSELF!!!!' I am such a charmer when hurt.

These IT-related incidents can happen to people of any age. I often have to evade younger persons who are texting while walking. I don't know how they avoid lamp posts! (Also I have seen a thread for younger people somewhere where they confessed to trying to use their computer games controller to move something in real life!)

Flowerofthewest Thu 11-Sept-14 19:38:23

Maybe they have an app on their phones to geo-locate the lamp posts en route! grin

Flowerofthewest copyright that idea quickly!
