Ministry of silly walks

Have any of you noticed that when getting out of the car after a hour or so that you walk a bit oddly for about 20 steps before you get back into your normal gait ?

Or is it just me ?

I do that anytime I've been sitting too long. My Dad used to call it "hippet" (with a Scottish accent). Sometimes I get all the way out of the room before I straighten up. I'm quite fit otherwise!

Yes, especially noticeable at the cinema or theatre, makes me feel very old, which of course I'm not! wink

My 5 year old GS has recently watched John Clees doing his silly walks - he keeps doing it himself. But he very astutely pointed out that it is not so funny when you have little legs!

Dear friend pointed out that I hobbled across the room just like her when I got off her sofa (and there was me thinking I was being all elegant in front of a roomful of people).

NanKate Tue 26-Aug-14 19:42:07

You lot have made me feel better, I thought it was me cracking up !

rosequartz Tue 26-Aug-14 19:52:42

I am older than you though! Just. grin

Sometimes, I find myself staggering off sideways - like a crab! confused

Anne58 Tue 26-Aug-14 20:22:15

I have the bad habit of tucking one leg up underneath me when sitting at the kitchen table for any other purpose other than eating, and also sit cross legged on the sofa with my feet tucked up and my knees touching the cushions. (The nurse who does my smear test has always commented on how well I manage the "ankles together, knees apart" thing, as my knees touch the couch on each side blush )

However I do these days sort of "lurch" a bit when getting up from the aforementioned positions.

Nowhere near as bad though as my silly walk down the office corridor when I had inadvertently put my thong on sideways confused

NanKate Tue 26-Aug-14 21:26:07

Phoenix you have given me the best laugh of the day with your description. I've had to find a tissue to wipe away the tears. grin

Anne58 Tue 26-Aug-14 22:17:14

Nankate glad to have amused you! grin

Are you just referring to the post above, or did you delve back into the mists of time and find the thong on sideways post?

POGS Tue 26-Aug-14 22:44:10

Nankate

I have osteoporosis and I call it 'Getting me click in me clack'.

As my thong is a tea towel and a yard of string I don't think it could even go sideways. confused

Ana Tue 26-Aug-14 22:46:56

I do find I tend to do the 'crab-walk' when I get out of bed in the middle of the night to go to the loo, these days...confused

NfkDumpling Tue 26-Aug-14 22:51:56

Any car journey of more than half an hour and I can get out of the car ok - but am then frozen to the spot for 30 seconds. I can't even step sideways to shut the door. Then, it's the silly walk for 50 yards. I thought it was just me.

NanKate Wed 27-Aug-14 08:13:15

Phoenix it is your post of 20.22 yesterday I was laughing at. Do you mean there are more thong stories I have missed ?

Nfk you are not alone, in fact from theses posts we are all wandering about like drunken crabs.

I find it helpful to pause for a few seconds after standing before attempting to walk. I remember seeing elderly folk doing this when I was younger and wondering why, not realising they were waiting for their legs to get their act together.

shysal Wed 27-Aug-14 09:08:48

I also thought it was just me. Getting out of the car after driving home from a hike leaves me doing what I call the Douglas Bader walk!

hildajenniJ Wed 27-Aug-14 09:42:03

Oh yes shysal me too. I do the same when getting up from the sofa. My DS commented the other day that I looked like I was walking without any joints.grin

Oldgreymare Wed 27-Aug-14 10:01:54

NanKate That and the first foray downstairs in the morning, first few steps very slowly, gathering pace as I reach the bottom!
Stopping at Service Stations to go to the loo, I'm sure the other punters think.... poor old dear she hasn't made it!

henetha Wed 27-Aug-14 10:41:29

Highly relieved by all the above... I honestly thought it was just me descending into old age very rapidly.

kittylester Wed 27-Aug-14 12:30:38

This might have saved us a bit of money! I'd just persuaded DH that we need new sofa cushions as the current ones are not offering sufficient support. Unless, of course, we all just need new upholstery! grin

NanKate Wed 27-Aug-14 18:08:44

Oldgreymare I was at a motorway service station today and thought I would try especially hard to walk properly.

I looked like the comedian who used to dress up as a woman and walk along and then trip. I can' remember his bl*****y name now ! He used to say 'you are awful but I like you'.

I see we are the same age and ex-teachers, maybe that explains why we have lost it.

DICK EMERY - got it. grin

Galen Wed 27-Aug-14 18:14:35

I'm the same when I first get up out of a chair. I'm almost 70but my feet and ankles think they're 99!

sherish Wed 27-Aug-14 18:28:07

Nankate it was Dick Emery. Very funny. He used to say 'You are awful'.

Oldgreymare Thu 28-Aug-14 09:44:09

Good for you NanKate I hope you succeeded..... I'm blaming teaching too!
Years of bending over low desks, reaching up to display boards and, of course, playground duty in all weathers........ but I wouldn't have changed it for the world (not sure I would feel the same today!)
